Hello all,

As I'm leaving my current assignment at VDO today, I have to
say goodbye to you all on the MSX mailing list. I'll be back
next year, but on another e-mail address...

I wish you all a very happy Christmas and all the best for
the next M(SX)illenniuM...

(We'll meet again
don't know where, don't know when
but I'm sure we'll meet again
 some sunny day ;-))

RE: Y2K aftermath on the MSX??

1999-11-29 Thread Boon, Eric

Hello all,

Research in the MILC learned me, that the clockchip uses two nibbles for
storing the date. The max value stored is H99, this is decimal 155,
and 1980+155 = 2135. So the clockchip gives the correct date until 2135
(Doubt if I make it till then ..) It's only the software ...

AFAIK, the clockchip uses BCD for storing its info, so H99 means decimal
99, not 155...

I know for sure (i.e. 95% ;-)) that Messy DOS uses temporary files in this
case...
(so actaully does something like:
   cat fudeba.txt tmp001
   head -20 tmp001 tmp002; del tmp001
   tail -10 tmp002 tmp003; del tmp002
   less tmp003; del tmp003
(DOS might even postpone the deletion of the tmp... files to the end!))

RE: Authors for MCCW (MSX Computer Club magazine on the Web) wanted!

1999-11-23 Thread Boon, Eric

[About _underline_, *bold* and /italics/]
YUCK! Rule number one: NEVER use underlined! It's an artifact
of typewriters that couldn't write in italics.

Wrong. Rule number one is: _*/NEVER!/*_ (*grin*) use explicit text
formatting.

You could also use TeX-style: Hi, I want a certain word to be
 \emph{emphasized}!

Taht is *much* better: the author indicates that (s)he wants to
emphasize a certain phrase, but leaves the real formatting (bold,
italic, underline, flashing red, caps, whatever) up to the
person/program doing the layout.

  or HTML-alike is also possible:
  Ithis text is italic/I

 Fair enough.

Nope, not fair enough: EMEmphasize/EM is better :-)

obMSX: Work on AMBeR is in progress. I had some trouble with
parsing the cmdline in a DOS version independable way...

RE: MBM replay in DOS (was: RE: Two questions!)

1999-10-15 Thread Boon, Eric

Hi,

Off-topic: interesting, I received Laurens' reply on these 2 msgs
before getting these...

Maarten wrote:

I think Alex asked the question because the original MB1.4 replayer

Ah, I C. I'll take my source-scissors and cut them out ;-)

 And what about MoonSound?
I can mail you a MBM replayer that plays on MoonSound too. It sounds
nice, in my opinion, because the MoonSound output is much clearer.

Please do! Any source code (eh, MSX related, that is ;-)) is welcome!

Hey, maybe it's possible to convert the MWK kit while the song is
 already playing.

Huh? You mean start playing without samples and add the samples later?
Hmmm... I'll see. Maybe it's possible to start converting while loading
the samples - load a block, convert it, load the next etc...

Manuel wrote:

-v verbose: give status/error reports on stderr

Can you be more specific on this last one? What are the status-
possibilities? How will DOS display them?

I dunno yet... Maybe something like:

 A:\ amber -v the_best.mbm samples.mbk
 --
 AMBER v 0.1 - 20 Oct 1999 - (C) Aurora
 --
 MSX-Audio detected
 MSX-Music detected
 loading the_best.mbm
 loading samples.mbk
 samples.mbk not found! trying the_best.mbk
the_best.mbk not found! no sample replay
 playing 53 patterns...
 user interrupt
 A:\ _

Ah, that brings me to another very useful option:

-lN When looping is on, loop N times, then fade out
N = 0 == loop forever...

MBM replay in DOS (was: RE: Two questions!)

1999-10-14 Thread Boon, Eric

Yoho,

I don't know if you need to use the memory mapper for the replayer,
but if so, can you please make sure that it is DOS2 compatible?

I hope he will, since my intention was to use the program from Multi-
Mente which I only run in DOS2! Heheh.

The first version will just load and play, nothing TSR like.
So it won't need any memory management and thus run on both DOS1 and
DOS2. When that runs well, I'll make a TSR out of it which should use
the following load scheme:

check for MemMan
IF MemMan present
THEN
use MemMan routines
ELSE
check DOS version
IF version is DOS2
THEN
use DOS2 memory routines
ELSE
assume DOS1 without memory manager
FI
FI

Another thing. First idea for commandline:

amber [-cN] [-v] filename[.mbm] [filename[.mbk]]

AMBeR = Aurora's MB Replayer
[...] = optional

options:

-cN chip select: 0 = auto (default)
 1 = MSX-Audio
 2 = MSX-Music
 3 = Both

-v verbose: give status/error reports on stderr

Samplekit handling:

IF MSX-Audio should play
THEN
IF filename mentioned in cmdline
THEN
try that one
FI
IF not found OR no filename in cmdline
THEN
try samplekit named in MBM
IF not found
THEN
try filename.MBK
IF not found
THEN
suppress sample replay
FI
FI
FI
FI

Sounds ok? :-)

RE: ez80

1999-09-27 Thread Boon, Eric

eZ80 main target group is the embedded software. For such appliances
(microwaves, laundry machines, cars, smartcards, etc), having
a TCP/IP stack in hardware can be very interesting...
It can make the OS more lean and mean
which is very important for embedded software.

As far as I can tell from the datasheets, the TCP/IP stack is
not implemented in hardware - so it must be some software
solution offered by ZiLOG.

Dunno, I thought it had some kind of SCC like thingie...

BTW, I own a FM-PAC made by Digital-KC which has an earphone out connector,

Does that mean that the OPL has two separate outputs, or is it just a
filter processing the sound afterwards? (drums = relative high freq, so

RE: Announcing the first public release of UZIX

1999-07-02 Thread Boon, Eric

Hi,

[UZIX]
1st of all: Adriano = *BIG* Fudeba :-D

Yes. It ignores MSX-DOS2.

Can it work with harddisks as well?

MegaSCSI users can write the demo disk-image in a extended
partition, select it at A: drive and boot UZIX without problems.
Now UZIX can access any MSX disk-drive, floppy or HD. But you
can't access MegaSCSI/IDE partitions for now (/dev/hda and similars
are not implemented).

Hm, sounds like you're not using the BDOS for disk I/O but writing/reading
directly to/from the disk controller, right? What's the reason for that?
Even if you're just using the sector read/write routines, you're saving a
lot of hassle.

BTW, will UZIX be open source (under GPL for example), so every one can
fine-tune his own kernel, write drivers (e.g the /dev/hdX ;-)) - like Linux?

Eric (waiting for some1 to do X on UZIX ;-))

[UZIX]
For now, there are 50 utils compiled for UZIX. All of them are in
the demo disks available on UZIX page.

Ok, is it much work to compile an average util, like top or so?

*grin* How much work is it to type 'make' ? ;-)

Eric (sorry, couldn't resist ;-))

PMA

1999-01-02 Thread Boon, Eric

Howdy,

does anyone have info on the PMA file format?
(Couldn't find anything in the Ultimate FAQ nor MiLC)
What I'm _really_ after is a Linux util to decompress
PMA's. Yes, of course I can start fMSX and run PMEXT in
it, but NO I don't want to start a f*** emu just for
extracting some PMA file :-/
(really nasty: in Linux, start dosemu and let _that_
run 22NICE/PMEXT :-P - Nah...)

Ciao,
