The unpredictability of dragging tasks in this, and Outline, is indeed a drag.
It seems to be more of an issue in lists of longer than 40 or so items.

create a new workspace (tab) and collapse either or both of the properties
panes, when you close MLO and later open it again the properties pane(s) will
still be closed in that workspace.
