e evitar fopen. Talvez até colocar o status.dat, retention.dat e
objects.cache no mesmo tmpfs. Vai melhorar o tempo de resposta dos cgis.

Eu tinha esses problemas de timeout com snmp também. O snmp, por usar udp, é
muito sensível a pequenas oscilações na rede.

Os plugins em C devem tem uma melhor performance. Eu não testei.
Os plugins salvam as tabelas de oids e alguns dados em arquivos temporários.
A lentidão pode estar na leitura destes arquivos.

dando erro em uma das máquinas...
Se vc usar ifconfig -a eth0 verá as informações se está dando erro.
Se vc usar ethtool eth0 verá se está conectado a 10, 100 ou 1000...

Ocorre que, pela política imposta pela área de segurança da empresa, não é
permitido instalação de qualquer arquivo no cliente monitorado.
Ao que me parece, para que o NRPE funcione, tem que instalar e configurar o
cliente, certo?

A minha dúvida é se não vai começar a atrasar as checagens,
Só alterar a conf do snmpd para escutar tanto udp quanto tcp, que é mais
caro mas não há perda de pacotes!

do an svn -r STABLE up on all the boxes, perhaps even automating that.

working, I'm a fan of having procmail look for trigger messages and send
a passive check result to Nagios when it sees one. A cron job can be
set up to send mail on a regular basis, and the check can then
