How much current are you using in a directly driven tube? I’ve had the
same issue with the pins lighting up with as little as 1mA on the Z570M
tubes.

My HT is a 12V module and is adjustable but the tube spec says 170V so
 I left it at that.
Are you saying that it's safe to increase the HT to get maybe 10mA?

[neonixie-l] Glowing Wires

2023-10-06 Thread 'Greg P' via neonixie-l
I have a clock that has some glowing lead wires from the glass seal to
where it connects to the individual cathodes. This doesn’t happen on every
cathode in the tube.

I know this can happen if too much current is applied but these tubes are
running at the rated current or below when using PWM for dimming.

So my question is; does anyone have an tricks to resolve this without just
changing out the tube? Trying to avoid changing as these tubes (Z570M) are
hardwired to the PCB.

Appreciate any help on this topic.

 Hi all,

Out of curiosity, I took a look at some old Burroughs nixie tube price
lists, and took the prices (1-99 pcs) to an inflation calculator
 (1963->2023). Here are some highlights:

 B-4991 (Miniature, $68.00) -> $677.10
 B-7094 (Jumbo, $45.00) -> $448.08
 B-4032 (Miniature, $33.00) -> $328.59
 B-5971 (13 Segments, $16.75) -> $166.79
 6844-A (Standard, $11.00) -> $109.53
 B-9012 (Pixie, $5.00) -> $49.79

I know that these tubes were made pretty much exclusively for
military/non-consumer applications, but it's still interesting to see just
how expensive nixies were in reasonable quantities.

This seller is some kind of estate liquidator I'm convinced of that. Some
of the clocks he sold could be traced by serial numbers and the original
buyer has since passed away. Again, this is my speculation based on the
deceased and where this seller is located, both in Northern New Jersey,
Metro NY area.

As far as the sex toys, who knows maybe they bought out one of those seedy
places in Times Square.

That eBayer has been selling a lot of Nixie related clocks, tubes, etc
along with sex toys. From what I can tell he must be a liquidator and I
presume bought out a Nixie collection from someone who either passed away
or decided to get out of the hobby.

I appreciate the BOM but the clock I have is the first one. The
Commemorative one that you were kind enough to share is for was for the one
that replaced the one I have with the modified Mike Harrison board and
ribbon cable in it.

Re: [neonixie-l] NL7037's...

2022-07-29 Thread 'Greg P' via neonixie-l
Gotta be one of the ugliest tubes out there IMHO. Anode mesh is very
coarse and the cathodes are thick and obstruct each other. Guess people
are paying for scarcity and the rounded top.

Z568M / Z5680M or Dalibor tubes way nicer and cheaper.

My guess $1600 for the lot.

[neonixie-l] NOS Lixies Available

2021-08-31 Thread 'Greg P' via neonixie-l
I realize these aren't Nixie's but figured someone on the group may be
interested.

I have 12 possibly 13 of these available, NOS. These are the first
generation ones with the natural colored top and bottom. Some consider
these better than the second gen ones. Pretty sure the guy who made them
has stopped producing.

PM me for details.

2019-12-04 Thread 'Greg P' via neonixie-l
Mahdi,

Not multiplexed.

Direct drive digits or segments are always on and not pulsed at high speeds
like in multiplexing. Direct driven tubes typically are brighter and
require less current. Multiplexed designs are simpler and require less
components which is cheaper.

I'm sure the folks here who are way smarter than me can give a better
explanation, but hopefully you get the gist.

 Hi, everyone,

I'm working on an eight digit ZM1350 display with a multilayered black
anodized aluminum and black acrylic exterior. I know eight ZM1350s are
 hard
to come by, but would anyone be interested in purchasing one, fully
assembled without tubes, to include the casing, for around $300.00? Just
gauging interest. Technically you can use however many ZM1350s as you have
available; eight for the full display.

Here's a GitHub repo with some pictures to check out more.

Thanks. I'm making it either way, but just looking to offset some
production cost since min order is five.

 Hi, Richard,

I saw your board - how nice! While the ZM1350 smart socket PCB on
groupsio helped me recreate the panaplex footprint, I am building my own
board in full, to include the decimal point functionality. Means of
 driving
(PIC with discrete transistors) is pretty much the same though.

I noticed you used an 8266 and Arduino in tandem - I know exactly how
you feel, and have done the same thing on occasion. I recently switched to
the ESP32 and am quite glad for having done so; while the 8266 is an
excellent microcontroller, it is just too pin limited. The susceptibility

[neonixie-l] Re: B8091's

2019-07-10 Thread 'Greg P' via neonixie-l
Seller is smoking crack. Tube/tubes in those pictures looks like there's
some darkening on the sides of the glass envelope.

Potential buyers beware, this guy is shady based on my previous
experience.

Jens,

I don't personally care what he prices them at, I'm all for capitalism. (my
issue with the seller was how he verbally attacked me when I made him an
offer privately for all 25pcs before he put the listing on ebay) It was
really strange. I just wanted to inform potential buyers this guy is
volatile and was playing games.

Nick,

He viciously attacked me for what he perceived as a low ball offer for all
25pcs of these tubes. I just want to warn any potential buyers he's
volatile. I never said he was a fraud, but just to proceed with caution in
dealing with him. I agree, they're worth what you're willing to pay, and
I'm not willing to pay $250 a tube for these.

He had a negative feedback earlier this morning, I saw it and it was the
most recent one, BTW. It's since been deleted.

Kevin,

You have no idea. All because he was "insulted" by my initial low offer.
Seriously, he harassed me on facebook making pretty bold accusations.
Good thing I have a thick skin.

[neonixie-l] Re: 8091 assembly

2019-06-26 Thread 'Greg P' via neonixie-l
This seller has been fishing to sell these tubes for months. He posted
these plus 20 others on Facebook a few months ago. I tried to make a
private deal with him for over 2 months and wouldn't put a price on them.
Avoided the question every time we corresponded. Also made excuses about
having a friend test them before he would sell. Anyhow, he reached back to
me when they were "allegedly" tested and said make an offer. I made an
offer to purchase all 25 (which he found my price insulting, BTW) and
proceeded to call me all kinds of names, accusations etc. (which I won't
post here) and was downright vicious. Maybe my offer was on the low side
but you got to start negotiating at some point especially when he wouldn't
give me a starting point. He harassed me privately on Facebook until I had
to block him.

Needless to say, if anyone is considering purchasing these, I'd be
cautious. Additionally, there are no pictures of any of these tubes lit in
our private correspondence or on the ebay listing.

At $250/tube plus shipping overpriced in my book. If anyone is considering
and would like additional info, I'd be happy to converse privately and off
the board.

Caveat Emptor!

7037's have a very course anode grid and their pinout is mirror image of
the Z568M or Dalibor tube. So if you're planning on using them in an

Seller must have had a change of heart after all the chatter circling the
web on this topic. He's now lowered them to a much more affordable $950.00

2019-03-31 Thread 'Greg P' via neonixie-l
Nice pic Nick!

Carl and Michael did do a fantastic job on these pieces. I'm enjoying mine
and really loving the Black Emerald. Nice to finally see the 8971's lit up.

I have 4 clocks tied to my Wireless PIR.

Thanks for the clarification. That's a new one on me, never heard that
term.

What exactly is the issue with your clock? I'm sure the folks here can
help troubleshoot the issue or failing components. Might not be necessary
to source a new PCB.

Have you reached out to the Nocrotec/Dieter for help?

[neonixie-l] Re: Some guy offering Rodan CD47 tubes

2017-02-23 Thread Greg P
I'd love to see Dalibor release something that large but pretty. The CD47
is butt ugly. It's like it was a 30mm tube stretched out and poorly
proportioned.
$2000-2500 per tube is just insanity, doubt the seller will have many
takers.

Let's go Dalibor flood the market with something better and let the market
set the price.

Dan,

I probably will. The part that aggravates me, is the being ignored then
making excuses. If he doesn't want to support the product anymore, just
tell me. I'd be OK with it.

[neonixie-l] Nocrotec IN-18 Blue Dream.....Poor Customer Service

2017-01-14 Thread Greg P

Let me start out by saying, I don't like posting negative information as
I've found everyone here to be awesome and helpful. After trying for the
better part of a month to get my issue resolved *PRIVATELY, *I feel I need
to share with the group.

Approximately, 4 years ago I ordered and built the Nocrotec IN-18 Blue
Dream and it's performed flawlessly until recently. I noticed the lower
NE-2 neons (wired in series) in the colon towers were intermittently
lighting when displaying the *TIME* only. All other functions such as
displaying date, and in Service Mode the lower NE-2's work just fine.
Additionally, I checked wiring and all connections etc. and everything is
OK.

So I reached out to Dieter no less than 4 times asking for advice and got *NO
RESPONSE. *It wasn't until I emailed Claus Urbach, (the site that sells
the IN-18 Blue Dream Kit) that I got a lukewarm excuse filled reply which
was to replace the colon towers. If the NE-2's were bad, why do they work
in Service Mode and when displaying date?

I continued to reach out to Dieter for help, and was ignored. Dieter keeps
using the excuse (thru Claus Urbach) there's something wrong with my email
(trust me there's not) and pushes the blame on me.

So here I am, a clock with issues, and no support. Claus has been great,
but told me there's nothing more he can do. I noticed Dieter has pulled
the links on his site and Claus doesn't have the kit listed anymore so who
knows what the situation is?

For those of you who were considering purchasing the IN-18 Blue Dream I
would highly advise you don't due to poor customer service. It's a shame,
because it's a really nice clock.

Dieter, ball is in your court, I know you read this site, I await your
reply.

Re: [neonixie-l] Jeff Thomas Nixie Clock

2016-10-06 Thread Greg P
John,

It truly is about as basic of a clock as you can get. Yes, it's almost
impossible to set the seconds accurately. I'm sure it's why Jeff came out
with his NixiSat/NixiChron/GPSII series of clocks which were a big
improvement in features and functionality.

I like it mostly because it was Jeff's first design and what started it all
for his Nixie endeavors.

Re: [neonixie-l] Jeff Thomas Nixie Clock

2016-10-05 Thread Greg P
David,

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of the seconds link. Seems there's
another reed switch that needs to be installed if the seconds option is
used, not sure if Jeff added that switch? I'll have to check.

I suspect no as I really couldn't dial in the seconds when I set the time.

Hi Dixter,

I appreciate the links but the clock I have isn't Jeff's NixiChron... The
links you provided are for that model, which is a much newer version of the
clock I'm trying to find documentation on. The NixiChron is a totally
different beast.

Thanks
