There have been many reported cases of the Ebay shipping program destroying
nixies and all sorts of
other tubes because they think they contain mercury, and can't be shipped by
air.

Never, ever use Ebay's shipping service for any kind of tube.

I've been using LCSC a lot in recent years, mostly for parts that are

The only issue I've ever had were some 74HC595s that had some missing features

Zebra TLP2844 thermal transfer, for address labels etc. These are sold under
different brands ( e.g

These do nice thermal-transfer onto paper or plastic labels, which are pretty
durable. Lots of
generic labels and transfer rolls available for these

Yes - you can run them at lower currents - you may start to get less uniform

point, but you could PWM them

Typical spec is 55-60v forward voltage,. max current 10-15mA

I wouldn't hold your breath.
I found an installation manual but not much useful info
ftp://ftp.folsom.com/Products/LED/Manuals/NX%20Rental%20installation.pdf

Super cheap though, and will probably be better quality than the cheap Chinese
panels, though maybe
quite old. If they weren't in the US I'd get some to play with.

I think you're going to need to pull it apart & reverse engineer it - could be
you could seperate
the led_driver section from whatever handles the panel-to-panel comms - may be
easier to figure out
how to drive.

If anyone gets some I'd be interested in getting hold of one to look at-
postage on one shoudn't be
too bad.

Even for bog-standard parts, if you have a lot of them ( maybe 50+) reflow is
easily way quicker.
Using a foot-operated vacuum pen, you can pick parts directly out of tape -
particularly useful for
polarised parts so you don't have to check polarity of every one you pick from
a random scattering
of loose parts..
For placing multiple parts from the same tape you can get down to 2-3 seconds
per part.
The end result also looks nicer (assuming you stay on the right side of the
line between "reflow"
and "incinerate".

Obviously use leaded paste, as the reflow/incinerate margin is much wider.
If you have access to a lasercutter or vinyl cutter you can cut stencils, which
saves even more
time, though a foot-operated dispener can be pretty qiuck - 1-2 dots per second
once you get into a
rythm, and for stuff like SO packages you can just do a line long the pads.
Even for fine-pitch
stuff, it;s often quicker to do a line then braid or drag-solder off the shorts
it afterwards, or
just drag-solder them first

I did a video a while ago about this :

probably whipped it up, quickly. He probably never imagined that nixie
tubes would become as big as a fad, as they are. He might have designed it
differently, had he known that more people, than just other geeky
engineering types, would be trying to build it. I got into the nixies, in
the summer of 2003, and the hobby (and this clock design) had already been
in existence a few years. Who knew, it would have this staying power !?

 Surely you cannot be serious!

Haha, threeneurons, you had me there. For a moment I actually believed
someone might be ignorant enough to do it that way.

Yes, it can cause minor issues on microcontrollers with analogue circuitry due
to current flowing
in paths that can cause unwanted offsets, but for simple logic, provided that
the source current is
sensibly limited, it generally works just fine, though probably a good idea to
use it on a schmitt
trigger input to guarantee a clean switch. I only recall a couple of reports of
erratic timing over
the years.
A large (few meg) resistor between S and Q might help by adding some
hysteresis.

Yes, it was designed pretty quickly, and there are other aspects of that
15-year-old design I
certainly would do differently, like the dodgy, timing-sensitive hours reset
logic, having the
seconds dividers in the wrong order and the slow time-setting, but the mains
supply and 50Hz input
would be low on the list of changes. I like the lack of a lumpy mains supply,
which allows for some
very compact constructions.

I might have published an alternate LVAC or DC+xtal option as alternatives if
I'd realised how
popular it would become.

The original goal was something small, simple and not using a microcontroller,
which at the time
was relatively expensive, and needed a programmer, which many people wouldn't
have had.

My biggest regret is that I didn't buy a big stock of tubes *which were going
for peanuts at the
time) to do some kits, or sell PCBs.

Also, is there any need to protect the controller pin from the voltage

No - the small high-value inductors have typically hundreds of ohms of series
resistance so no smoke
if the transistor turns on continuously

the transistor base resistor won't pass enough current to damage the MCU.

Put a 10-100millihenry Inductor across piezo ( you can get some very
 cheap axial ones), and drive
withan open collector transistor, Note that disconnecting the piezo will
 produce a high voltage
that may kill the transistor unless you use a HV transistor like MPSA42,.
 if the piezo is solidly
connected you can usually use a bog-standard NPN as the piezo will limit
 the voltage.
Also remember that piezos are sharply resonant so tweaking the frequency
 for loudest output makes a
big difference, regardless of how you drive them.
