Thanks!
Still have to clean up the edges of the aluminum. The aluminum is a funny
story. We recently tore down an old aluminum screen door and the bottom
panel was this aluminum. It was actually two sheets back to back, so the
sides that where touching where still nice and shiny. Now that I think of
it the tubes and aluminum are both from the 70s.

I have another of these built and waiting for the case and 3 more boards I
might turn into clocks eventually.

2019-08-07 Thread Tyler Bourne
Adventures with IN-28s.

I have determined that in this clock the IN-28s are operated in the
following way:

The anode is connected to half wave rectified 240V AC, the cathode is
grounded through a 4.7K resistor.
The grid is connected to the control board through a 1M resistor with a
3.9M pulldown. I assume the grid voltage is around 160-170V

The original transformer is gone so I will have to make a new one. This
isn't too bad since I can make it with a 120V primary.

Thanks Dekatron42 didn't know of that list.
Google translate does give me some information but it can still be hard to
follow since Google translate is not very good with technical documents.

Thanks again Kosbo, the translation makes more sense now. Too bad the old
datasheet doesn't list which pins are for which gate lol. I'll have to
power up the board and probe it.

So a К134ЛБ1 would be 2 2input NAND gates and 2 2input NOR
gates. https://eandc.ru/catalog/detail.php?ID=6671

While I don't think Google will discontinue Drive any time soon it is a
good idea to have a few backups. We are currently using 2 of 15 GB so it
should be some time before we outgrow it. When that time cones we can
either find someone who will host it for free or pay Google to get more
space.

In the mean time I'll go through the files and categorize them all and see
if I can plan out a consistent folder structure. Then I can sort it all
out.

A community owned and operated site would be the only way to ensure ongoing
availability. As long as there are at least three administrators it should
survive.

Organizing the files in the file section here first would help though and
make an eventual move over to a database site easier.

I haven't gone over the power supply yet. It looks like the main transformer
is missing. If I can figure out what voltages it needs I can find/make a
replacement. The wires from the socket to the transformer look incredibly thin.
With all digits lit it must draw around 150-200 watts if each one draws around
50W. The draw would depend on the time but I'm not sure how those thin wires
handled it. It might have some sort of multiplexing going on so that all
segments are not lit at once.

[neonixie-l] Re: IN-28's in real life...

2019-05-23 Thread Tyler Bourne
The clock has arrived! It's Huge!
It seems like the clock was in the process of being stripped for parts when
it was saved. The tens of hours board was covered in nasty flux, probably
the plumbing kind. I've cleaned it up and put it back in.
I've created a schematic for the display board and will start working on a
replacement. While the display boards are all the same the control boards
attached to the back of them are all different depending on which digits
are needed. I can tell this is a 12 hour clock since the tens of hours
digit can't form a 2, interestingly most for the tubes on that board have
never been used.
Since the display boards and the controller boards are separate I can
replicate the display board the way it is. I will create a replacement
control board for my clock and will also create a more modern control board
for use with the spare display boards I will have.

The IN-28 is an odd nixie, it runs at a higher voltage and has a control
grid. All the groups of control grids are connected to the HV supply
through a 3.9M resistor and to the chips through a 1M resistor. I'll have
to figure out what all these chips are and find a modern equivalent.
If any Russian speaking members of the group can help identifying the chips
I would be super grateful.

[neonixie-l] Re: IN-28's in real life...

2019-05-14 Thread Tyler Bourne
I did!
I will reverse engineer it and make a replacement board. I will order 10
of them unless anyone else wants to buy(or trade for) some.

In the pictures it looks like there is a board that holds the tubes and a
driver board on the back.
I will try and make the tube boards as universal as possible so people can
connect their own drivers. I might also design a modern driver board as
well to go with it.

I bet a lot of the ones that have been modernized with LED displays had
Nixies or Mechanical displays originally.

[neonixie-l] Re: RZ568M clock kits?

2019-04-03 Thread Tyler Bourne

Hi Dalibor.

I have a couple thoughts on a kit.

I would lean toward through hole components if possible to improve ease of
assemble and hackability, this may not be practical though.
Using a socketed Arduino compatible controller would also help with the
hackability.

I can't wait to someday see a jumbo nixie for an affordable* price.
*compared to a CD47.

PS. I actually like the shape of the numbers in the CD47, makes it a bit
more unique.

Nixies:
B-7009 x1 - Used in box so UIB I guess?
B5750 x1 - NIB
ZM1000 x1 - NOS
NL8422 x1 - Used
Another like a 8422 but missing it's markings and slightly differently
built x1 - Used
KS-19944 x1 - Used, Same as 8422, Its definitely used since there is some
very slight darkening of the glass, still very usable though. (Technically
in it's original box but the box is nasty)
NL840 x2 - Used (Wang Labs 340-0004)
B-5440A - Used? (Might be NOS) Still on driver board B 200-100-628-A
B-5442A - Used? (Might be NOS) + - symbol tube Still on driver board B
200-100-627-A
B5031 x2 - Used (Hard to determine, Markings on tubes nearly worn off when
I got them)
NL5092 x1 -used (Hard to determine, Markings on tubes nearly worn off when
I got it)
B-54364 x5 - NOS (Odd dual symbol tube)

Numitrons:
RCA DR2010 x3 - 2 Used, 1 NIB (Haven't tested them yet but look good)

Nixie Sockets:
Burroughs BIPCO BIP8211P x1 - Used
Burroughs BIPCO BIP8804-1 x1 - Used

I found a detector on ebay. Will test it out when it gets here.
I'm not sure how they are driving the tubes since I don't see the usual
driver chips. I'll examine the board and see if I can figure out how
they're doing it.
Also I have a video of the display. Not a very good video but I'll take
another when I have the detector.

Cool project. I've done a bit of SMD and it wasn't too bad. My soldering
iron tip isn't the smallest but it was still doable. The flux pen helped a
lot.
That flyback power supply looks neat. You could do that as a separate
kit. People are always looking for a good Nixie PSU.
Would you be willing to release the schematics of the PSU? I understand
keeping it private if you would like to sell the modules.
