Re: [neonixie-l] Re: Nixie - Shorted segment - How to blast it apart?

2015-12-10 Thread gregebert
Electrically zapping internal shorts is risky, and my experience shows it's
only a temporary fix.

I've only had one Burroughs tube (6091) fail on me, and after I zapped the
first short, a different one appeared. As far as I can tell, the original
failure (two cathodes shorted together after 1+ years of usage) may have
been a latent manufacturing defect because after I zapped the tube, there
was a strange piece of metal that got bonded to another cathode, and it
would ionize the neon. Too bad I didn't photograph it. After more zapping,
at least 1 digit no longer illuminates fully. The inside surface of the
tube is severely darkened, perhaps it's sputtered cathode material. Now the
tube just sits on my desk as a trophy.

See my other postings (rants ?) about zapping IN-1's. I've given up on
using those tubes in projects.

Re: [neonixie-l] Re: Nixie - Shorted segment - How to blast it apart?

2015-12-10 Thread chuck richards
I have some chinese tubes and a few of them had little gunk
pieces loose inside the glass which shorted a few digits.
Shaking and bumping them just right fixed all that.
Those tubes look to be very cheaply made, but they look great
and work great when they are working right.

[neonixie-l] Re: Nixie - Shorted segment - How to blast it apart?

2015-12-09 Thread Michael Seaton
I'd inspect the shorts. If it's a solid mechanical connection between
segments, the tapping method may be your best option, but be careful!

Blasting works OK for fine whiskers, but not strong mechanical connections,
of course.

Good luck!

3 have crossed over segments. Will post a pic if the above links work.

I thought I saw at one time that someone applied power to heat it and
