Have you looked inside? 2N3055 aren’t that unobtainable but still ...

You can still get them in Silicon Valley.  See page 16:  
https://anchor-electronics.com/price-list.pdf , and don't forget the 
plastic equivalents (MJE3055, TIP3055, etc.).
