For some time now London has been in need of a proper hacker space.
The number of hacking
groups has exploded over the last year or so with new events popping
up every weekend.
Despite this we're still missing a meeting place, a place where we can
store projects
and share ideas. Where we can meet like minded people who share our
passions. Where we can
learn new skills without making a significant investment.

We'd like to change that, but we need people to help.

If you're interested, we've set up a preliminary mailing list on
google groups where we can
gather. It's just temporary until we come up with a name and have more
solid foundations.

I'm trying to set something up like that in Birmingham currently. It
seems there's interest in it, but not the manpower. Good luck with
yours, I may travel down to see it too.

A good precursor example, that most here are probably familiar with, is
Access Space / Redundant Technology Initiative (Sheffield), run by James
Wallbank. More hardware hacking, but nevertheless relevant. It worked!

[NetBehaviour] Changeover - Open Call for Submissions.

2009-01-26 Thread marc garrett
Changeover - Open Call for Submissions.

What could be more temporary than guerilla exhibitions in a Temporary
Art Space during the taking down of one show and the hanging of the
next? Every day promises to be different with variable opening times
according to the hanging schedule. The public will be able to see the
inner workings of a gallery as the parasitic 'Changeover' exhibitions
attempt to occupy an ever decreasing space. You could propose to use the
whole space or a part of it for one hour, one day or propose a project
that runs for the whole duration of 'Changeover'.

Changeover dates:

Friday 27th March – Friday 3rd April 2009
Friday 24th April – Friday 1st May 2009
Friday 29th May – Friday 5th June 2009
Friday 26th June – Friday 3rd July 2009
Friday 31st July – Friday 7th August 2009

Artists should bear in mind that limited gallery space will be available
during changeover and there will be through-traffic and installation
work undertaken, email proposals with supporting images (under 10MB
total) and web links to: i...@temporaryartspace.co.uk

Temporary Art Space is an unfunded, artist-run project with a lifespan
of six months, situated in the magnificent Grade 1 listed Piece Hall in
Halifax and co-directed by Alice Bradshaw, Bob Milner, Tom Senior, Kevin
Boniface Georgia Boniface.

How can the cultural sector survive the financial crisis?

We delve into the issues surrounding the cultural sector and the global
financial crisis by inviting the esteemed Helmut K. Anheier to comment
on the year ahead for us in How can the cultural sector survive the
financial crisis?

Focusing on the concerns facing those working in the cultural sector,
the article looks directly at the future role of governments and
institutions, global, societal and economical trends and presents real
suggestions for getting through the squeeze.

2009-01-26 Thread APO33
Hi
we are trying to set up a medialab since one year in Area10 where we
could welcome such meeting and open the space for projects like that.
We faced a lot of difficulties due to the space condition. The space
that would have been dedicated to it have been flooded 2 weeks ago...

http://www.a10lab.info is the backup website of few months ago (our
server was under water!!!)

We are actually looking for a new space for the medialab, or in Area10
or near.

Also we are actually opening a new space in Cossall Estate, peckham,
dedicated to new media, hacking, open hardware, free software,
workshop, digital art...etc

I will join the list and propose it there but if some guys are already
interested we could talk about it for some meeting or proposition.

the space should be operational early march!

cheers

[NetBehaviour] Zebulon set from last night

2009-01-26 Thread Alan Sondheim

Zebulon recording from last night

Here's a recording of the set Myk Freedman (lap steel), Azure Carter
(voice), and I (acoustic electric, tamburitza, ukulele) did last night at
Zebulon. The original recording was incredibly noisy - I did what I could
to sweeten it with CoolEdit. I'm quite happy with the music. In order -
all accompanied by Myk -
1 - w/ acoustic electric. This is the worst recorded - string buzz is much
too noticable. Fast tempo.
2 - w/ Azure, melody and voice, and tamburitza - slow then jump rhythm
3 - w/ ukulele - this needed a contact mike - I was thinking of Henry
Grimes' percussion along the way.
4 - w/ acoustic electric - high-speed quotes outside potential wells.

That's about it - enjoy - Alan

[NetBehaviour] Weather, Sync, and Physics in SL from yesterday

2009-01-26 Thread Alan Sondheim

Weather, Sync, and Physics in SL

The following have come out of the show in Second Life -

ian.mp4 is based on Debris Field, the title of the installation - since it
was near closing, I took out a lot of the elements present and added one
which was duplicated - this was made for Ian Ah. There are about 100 of
these; in ian.mp4 the avatar travels through them. What's interesting is
the way they align themselves into two groups, at either ends of the field
- and the way the particles from the groups form somewhat random vortices.
You can see the alignment in sync.mp4 - I removed the particles for this,
so the objects are clearly visible and divided into two sets of equivalent
but out of sync motions. I'm fascinated by this - I think the field itself
must be divided into two different land parcels. So virtual worlds go -
they're stitched together. The last video, vortices.mp4, maps the weather
over the regions - particles cross boundaries without changing direction,
but their initial impulse comes from their parent region. There's a fairly
complex physics at work here - the vortices are in 3d of course, or 4d
dynamic objects. In a sense this is a computer modeling of a computer
modeling - the programmed space made visible by a layer of programmed
responding particles and particle generators.

So what emerges? Stitching, vortices, weathers without precipitation or
effect on 'concrete objects' (i.e. only on particles). In the future, the
stitching will cover larger and larger areas, precipitation will leave
floods, wind damage, and destruction in its wake; and grounds will muddy,
dust bowls will render the virtual land virtually fallow...

Below are some stills from the above as well as others of the elements in
the debris field, including a few of Julu Twine with different elements as
well.

[NetBehaviour] XorCurses-0.0.2

2009-01-26 Thread james of jwm-art net
Hi,

For those interested (in retro console/terminal ASCII games on Linux) I
have just made a new release of XorCurses. It's starting to look like a
proper game now :-) New to this release are: falling fish (ouch) running
chickens (arrgh!) a map (woohoo!) and even, imagine this, a menu to
allow you select which level you want to play (some levels restricted
until further coding) - just like the original Xor game!

more:
http://jwm-art.net/light.php?p=j20090127-0415

there's bound to be bugs, but the last time i checked (on the important
stuff) no memory leaks.

enjoy.
