I tried a quick search on it and the articles all say that firefox
doesn't have a built-in way to disable audio (surprising,
that someone has put a more modern
version of Chromium in pkgsrc-wip. Those might be worth a try.

you try nouveau on Linux with your system. It could be that your
nVidia card is too new to be supported by nouveau or the X nv server.
