Easily solved!!
Opened Konqueror as root, and went to /dev/ and altered permissions to
parport0 so that others could read

I've finally gotten round to plugging a scanner in
Guess what? it wont go..
I have all the relevant sane files etc, and if I go to configure your
scanner in MCC, it tries to detect, the scanner whirrs, and then the program
exits abnormally
There is no sign of the device

Opened xsane as root, and managed to get a successful scan!!
Although the command line threw up this:
