[nfc-l] NFC equipment
Hi All, I am a design engineer recently (Feb 09) retired from the Bioacoustics Program (BRP) at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. I have designed and built most of the microphones and housings used by BRP to record NFCs . Presently, I have a four microphone array behind my barn feeding a Labview program in a laptop. I have a microphone housing design that has been out in the weather for almost a year and all the mics still work. I am most interested in what kind of hardware people are using and what works well and what needs improving. I think the biggest challenge is in the microphones. My question is what would the ideal microphone be? What are the specs for frequency response, sensitivity, signal-to-noise, size, cost etc? I look forward to hearing from you, TomF -- NFC-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NFC_WELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NFC_RULES --
[nfc-l] Newspaper article on the subtle nuances of nocturnal migration
Hi, all. There's a decent--quite decent, all things considered--article in yesterday's Daily Camera (Boulder, Colorado, newspaper). Topics covered: --Nocturnal flight calls of Yellow Warbler, Chipping Sparrow, and Lark Sparrow --Sex differences in vocalizations of Mallard and Great Horned Owl --Night-singing in local resident (not migrating) Barn Swallows --Migratory sleeplessness in Swainson's Thrush and White-crowned Sparrow --Effects of weather on the detectability of nocturnal flight calls --Facultative molt-migration by passerines in the Interior West (!) Not bad... Here's an online version of the article. Dunno how much longer it will be up there: http://www.dailycamera.com/news/2009/aug/12/prentice-migrants-and-meteor s-make-early-morning-n/ --Ted -- NFC-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NFC_WELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NFC_RULES --
