[nfc-l] Moonwatching tonight

2011-09-10 Thread Andrew Albright
I believe that with the full moon and favorable* migration conditions
tonight might be a good night for moonwatching.

I just had limited success doing this. I had one bird going southeast
(headed for Cape May) and was really high. A few minutes later, I had
a second bird a little lower going on a different course - southwest.
I wasn't able to hear either of them.

The last two nights were overcast here. I'm sure those that have done
this enough have had heavy flights where they could moonwatch - that
would be fun.

Sincerely,
Andrew Albright

*At least for the mid-Atlantic.

Re: [nfc-l] First migration of the season possible tonight in the mid-atlantic?

2011-09-10 Thread Allen T. Chartier
Ted,

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who noticed the unusual phrase "first
migration". From a birding and banding perspective here in southeastern
Michigan, warblers and flycatchers (and some vireos) have been going strong for
more than three weeks, and thrushes have been trickling through for a couple
weeks, as expected. Some species, like Yellow Warbler, Warbling Vireo,
Baltimore Oriole, and Bobolink are almost all gone from here, but we're getting
close to peak for warblers and thrushes, with sparrows to start in a couple
weeks.Definitely in the "middle of migration" here in Michigan...

  Hi, all.

  Thanks for the report.

What fascinates me, from my Interior West perspective, is the phrase "first
migration of the season possible tonight."

Basically, we're done, finished, outta here, night-flight-wise, here in
central Colorado. We had our biggest flights of the "fall" season a month ago.
We were having heavier flights in mid-July than we are now. (ZERO flight calls
the past week.)

That said, we do get occasional light-to-moderate Sept. and Oct. and even
early Nov. night flights in central Colorado. And rarely, they're heavy, as in
the early morning of Sept. 29, 2008 (Bryan G., what was going on,
winds-aloft-wise, that night??). But, basically, we're into the winter doldrums
already!

  All best,
  Ted Floyd

  Andrew et al.:

  oh, It's DEFINITELY ON:
http://weather.rap.ucar.edu/radar/nids/images/N0R/KUSA/20110909_030900.png

heavy migration out of the NE US tonight almost exclusively on NE winds and
heading SW as a result (not good for Cape May- but good for inland migrant
traps).

Re: [nfc-l] 9/11/11 and twin spotlights

2011-09-10 Thread Susan Elbin
Jim,
Thanks for raising the flag about the Tribute in Light Memorial. New
York City Audubon will be monitoring the beams tomorrow night (Sept.
11), as we have every year since 2006.
I'm not sure what confusion you are talking about. There were a lot of
low-flying birds last year. We were able to have the lights turned off
5 times during the course of the evening, based on our bird counts and
observations.
Last year we worked directly with Andrew Farnsworth, to set up a NFR
on the roof and got some amazing calls - and data about light and
calling.
We plan to collect the same data this year.

thanks!

2011-09-10 Thread Jim Tate
The constant rain of the last week has let up and it appears birds are moving again.  Does anyone know if they are planning twin spotlights tonight at the site of the twin towers?  I would not care to see a repeat of last fall's confusion.    -TATEJames Tate, Jr., Ph.D. | Research Associate |Smithsonian Institution Migratory Bird Center | National Zoological Park |T 202-841-2056 | Email j...@tate-tate.usJames Tate, Jr. | Senior Fellow and Director |Ecological Economics and Ethics Program |Potomac Institute for Policy Studies |Ballston Metro Center Office Tower | 901 N.
