I never needed any sort of sealant on my 650, the Y-boots just shove in there. As long as the boots aren't deformed and fit snugly in their openings they shouldn't allow any air leakage. As far as I know the U-shaped metal bit is just there to add support and keep boot from collapsing but perhaps
