ordered this book and read it cover to cover (some sections three or four
times), and it really helped me out a lot! I don't have anyone else to ride
with, so it's just me out there trying to figure things out.

Cool, glad you liked the book as well. For me it was tips like looking at a
cars tires to determine if they are going to pull out, and how to fake out
dogs, lane positioning, etc, were the kinds of tips that I use all the
time. Once you get some confidence in your tires it changes your enjoyment

Got my temps, insurance, tags today. I practiced starting and stopping,
figure eights, turns, starting on hill (and because of stalling it multiple
times while learning to use the clutch, got a crash course in popping the
clutch). I have two big things to keep working on, using

I always thought the parking lot stuff was the hardest; riding on the roads at
55 mph was really a no-brainer.
I did all the same stuff as well, practicing in an empty parking lot by my
apartment. One thing I worked on that sounds similar to you was carefully
finding the braking
I found that the best way to practice your braking is but choosing a mark
at which you will hit the brakes. Say a crack on the ground, a line, etc.
Then riding on straight line at 10-20 mph I will see hit the brakes at the
mark and see how far it took me to get to a complete stop. I will repeat
