[Nighthawk Lovers] My mechanic is retiring so it's time to retire my Nighthawk - NT700V thoughts?

2018-03-19 Thread Hawaii Sean
In the past 18 months two of the three "older" motorcycle mechanics in
Honolulu have passed away and the one left is retiring next month. He's
the only person who's worked on my Nighthawk sense I've had it and will
actually call me when he somehow knows my bike needs something. He has
been the proud owner of 4 Nighthawks over the past 30 years of owning his
shop. I can't see anyone else working on my bike. Plus I'm at 103,000+
plus miles, 90,000 of them I put on the bike so maybe it's time to upgrade
to something more modern.

Through friends I can get a 2010 NT700v for at most $3,000. Only 5,000
miles on the bike and in amazing shape. The owner only road weekends,
garage kept and never seen the rain. I remember when these came out and
thought they were interesting and think they would be a great daily
rider, especially for Honolulu. Basically a small "sport touring" bike
with lots of storage for all my stuff.

Has anyone road one of these? Any thought or feedback from other Nighthawk
riders would be great. I love my 750 and will hate to see the bike go but
it's time. A friends wife is looking for a starter bike - I'm going to
give her my Nighthawk. I just don't have a mechanic to take care of it the
way it has been for the last 10 years and really don't want to see someone
else take care of the bike.

Sean

[Nighthawk Lovers] 82 650 float valve

2018-03-19 Thread Sean Waite
I bought an 82 650sc last year and drove it for a while before I noticed
the leak (small at first) became very large. Took it to the shop and they
said the automatic valve had gone and he ran the fuel straight from the
tank to the carbs. It still leaked after that and didnt really solve any of
the problems (poor power above 80Km/H) so this winter I took it apart and
put in new needles and rings. I also bought another fuel valve and petcock
(old petcock was toast and the mechanic not only ran the hose straight, he
took the original valve), however the new (to me) valve doesnt work well
either (poor spring I think) and the carbs still leak. Correction, there is
a fuel leak but its possible it is happening because the float bowls are
filling and overflowing. I see things that say change the o ring in the
float needle, but I dont have any. I guess after all that, my question is
does the 82 have o rings or gaskets that seal the needle/fuel once the
floats are raised? The needles that came with the kit look exactly the same
as the old ones so now Im confused as to why they just keep filling with
fuel.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Rear engine mount bolt slightly bent...

2018-03-19 Thread pdxkevy
Upon removing my rear mounting bolt, I noticed it was a tad bent. Is this
something I should attempt to straighten, replace, or just not worry about
it.
Thoughts?

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Carburetor Nighthawk 650 '88 California edition?

2018-03-19 Thread ddt
Now i've got the bike here at my place. I had a fast look on it but
couldn't see anything unusual. Does anyone know where that "canister"
should be mounted? Anyway, i found out, that a picture of my bike is on
german Wikipedia, the pre-previous owner put a picture there. The previous
owner just added a windshield, everything else still looks (nearly ) like on
the picture...

I don't know the model numbers off the top of my head but your
suspicions are probably correct that it's for the CA model. They only made
the 650 from 83-85 though it's possible yours wasn't sold until '88. What
date does the VIN plate on the neck have?

[Nighthawk Lovers] Spark..

2018-03-19 Thread logan vandam
Running wonderful last season. Parked in shop been working on body and just
random stuff nothing really with the motor. Started it a couple months ago to
keep myself motivated. Started right up.. Go to do it again to see what I'm
working for. And nothing just won't go. Do all the test realize I'm not getting
spark in the two middle ones. Wait for new caps to come in.. Replace em, still
nothing and cable keeps getting shorter because of trimming for maybe better
connection. So decide to get new cable. 7mm copper core cable from and old
timer motorcycle mechanic in town. Replace that and I still can't get spark.
Tried different caps and the spark plug works. So the plugs not bad. Hook up a
multimeter and it's getting voltage about the same as the ones that work. Just
the plug won't spark.. Is there a chance that it's the wrong cable. Don't think
the cylinders are out.. Any help would help my sanity.
Thanks logan
