Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Carbs started leaking out of the blue.

2019-03-17 Thread Graham Rogers
One carb, you will not be able to adjust, # 3 in your case I think, the one
that has the vacuum tube. So that is the one you synch the other three to,
whatever it reads. The trick is getting it running fairly well at idle to
get a true reading.
Yes let it run longer to get #1 running. We’ve all been through what you’re
going through, so persist. You can’t synch the carbs with choke open to
full unless that means choke ‘off’.
Check that #1 spark plug, is it wet, black with carbon, white? That will at
least tell you what’s going on. If it’s wet, dry it off and try again.
One minute with choke operation not long enough, did you try backing the
choke off and seeing if that cylinder fires. I’ve fooled around for hours
trying to get all cylinders running sometimes. Maybe that one cylinder
doesn’t need choke, you just have to experiment in starting procedure a
bit. The last Nighthawk I synced all cylinders ended up at 20 but it took
a bit of tweaking.

Few more inquiries about syncing.
1. The manual said to have choke open to full - is that correct?
2. Where does the needle need to point on the sync gage dial when the carb
pressure is correct?

In general (to my great frustration):
1. It’s weird but the damn carbs keep not working at a random order - today the
number one is not working(the header is cold) while others are at 70* C after a
minute of open choke operation. Should I let it run longer - this is the first
time I am starting after a full and thorough clean.
2. Should I lean out the pilot screw more (right now is at the factory/manual
setting) - the exhaust smells strongly of gasoline.
Thank you guys!

Here is the state of the carbs as they are - i have not cleaned anything
 yet - seems very clean.
The rubber gaskets are a gonner thought - all plasticky and tough. I have
changed the O-rings and the gaskets on the bowls.
Keeping my fingers crossed as I am putting it back together.
Let me know (looking at the pics) if there still a need to soak anything

I sometimes remove the vacuum tube, sometimes not. I did a 700S Nighthawk
last and just used the connecting adapter to the vacuum tube.

Hey friends!
So I have cleaned everything, installed them on the bike. All seem to be
working (even thought #3 header pipe is not as hot as the others - measured it
with the thermometer). Now on to syncing - and a quick question about that. I
presume when inserting the brass adapters/extensions into the intake tubes, for
the number 3 intake, the vacuum tube needs to be disconnected first? Or is
there another place on there? Not sure if the way I worded my question makes
sense but I hope it does. Will snap a few pics to illustrate later on. Thanks
all.
