OK, I ended up taking it off the hot lead on the back side of the fuse box. 
That is off when the bike is off.

Yes, connecting a voltmeter directly to the battery would use battery 
power, but all you'd have to do to disconnect it if you wire it with a 
12-volt accessory plug is pull it out of the outlet.

Wouldn't that run the battery down because it was always on? My question is 
premised on the volt meter turning on and off with the ignition.

Not having great mechanical skills myself, I'd connect an accessory cord to 
the battery, connect an automotive 12 volt adapter to the accessory cord, 
and use a regular volt meter like those that will insert into a car's 
cigarette lighter.  If you want a voltmeter that will mount to your 
handlebar, you might connect it directly to the battery.
