On the gaming front, there may be good news soon. http://store.steampowered.com/livingroom/SteamOS/ Steam has been working on their SteamOS for a while, which is a Linux distro customized for gaming. Many games that are DirectX-only aren't going to run, but many OpenGL and other types will.

Just a thought, the Ubuntu install CD does have a live environment that would allow someone to access the remote desktop during the initial install process. Assuming the remote party can boot to a DVD and has access to the internet one could then use TeamViewer, vnc, etc to do a remote assisted
