Re: [nlug] calling database admins - (WAN / VPN) Replacement for old database app? (LAMP stack?)

2015-09-15 Thread Michael L
What app would allow us to design an arbitrary interface to look like what
we have on approach? I understand PHP to be a front end for mySQL.
"Maybe" our user would work with something more modern if we can make it
look like the old.

I appreciate getting to ask these questions.

Re: [nlug] calling database admins - (WAN / VPN) Replacement for old database app? (LAMP stack?)

2015-09-15 Thread Andrew Farnsworth
Michael,
A VPN, or virtual private network, is a network that is constructed by
using public wires — usually the Internet — to connect to a private
network, such as a company's internal network. So for example, you can have
your laptop with you at a starbucks (or even at home) and start a VPN
connection to your office. Your computer will connect using the internet
and setup an encrypted data stream from your laptop to the office, it will
then use this encrypted path to setup a virtual LAN that nobody can access
except you (Well, and the NSA :-) ). This way, even though
you are on a public network, your virtual network connection to the office
is protected and private and you can safely access the resources in your
company network when you are out of the office. If you have two offices
that are separate from one another you can use the same technology to
connect the two offices as if they were on the same physical network.

2015-09-15 Thread Chris McQuistion
How about you put the Windows XP machine on an Internet-connected LAN with
a static IP address and gateway and NO DNS servers. With that
configuration, you can configure a remote RDP connection, but that computer
can't effectively get onto anything external (other than by IP address),
and nothing will be coming in except the RDP port (which you can change to
a non-standard RDP port and make sure only a certain user (with a strong
password) is allowed to connect via RDP.

Re: [nlug] calling database admins - (WAN / VPN) Replacement for old database app? (LAMP stack?)

2015-09-15 Thread Wesley Duffee-Braun
Hi Michael,

It sounds like the database itself doesn't have to be synced anywhere,
there is just a need for remote client access. That's going to be tough to
do with the policy of keeping the DB physically isolated :) So yes, that
security policy will probably have to go if the database user has the pull
to force a remote access setup for their needs.

When you say "database user who doesn't want to learn anything new" how do
they access the db currently? Is there a UI for Approach that they use
currently, and is that what they want to access remotely? Setting up RDP
(the windows remote desktop protocol) over VPN is a solution if they must
see the Windows XP desktop to use the database. Doing a Windows XP instance
in the cloud so everyone can have easy remote access is possible -
cheapest I could find was http://www.colossuscloud.com/pricing.phtml which
appears to be at least $20/month.

It sounds like a rock and a hard place, and unfortunately if your DB user
is absolutely set on staying with Approach, then the option set isn't very
wide.
