I am about to submit some more patches (additions to
aclocal.m4, configure.in plus some other files to handle
the remaining SunOS4.x build/run problems in an appropriate
noninterfering fashion. I'm just about to do a final test
on Solaris8, and mayble BSDI-3.1 (kinda old).

Well, it took me three hours instead of two to get the patch submitted.
For what it is worth, I tested a patched version of today's CVS head
on SunOS4.1.4, Solaris8(sparc), BSDI BSD/OS 3.1 and Slackware 12.x Linux.

Yes. That patch works - almost (one more similar change). I had
made the same makefile changes (except your lex change is cleaner)
and successfully built outside the source directory using the
SunOS4.1.4 vendor version of make - a rather crusty old make
I largely abandoned maybe 10 years ago in
