NPNY: New vids on LF

2009-07-31 Thread Andrew Stanger
Wow - the two new videos from the Jazz Festival - posted on LF.com are
excellent. Great camera work and the version of LRC is killer. Love
when he switches up the arrangements of classics. Like being reminded
what an amazing musician he is...

Happy almost weekend.

Good to see you too, Andy.

Here's what I posted on HQ...

I was at all those shows--Avery Fisher soundcheck, main show, &
aftershow at
the World--and Xenophobia celebration at Paisley 2002, as well as
Butter in
NYC in 2006. And I have to say (as I said in my earlier post) this
aftershow
smoked Butter. There was no "Joy in Repetition" moment (as at the
World--but
that was really the only "moment" that I enjoyed anyway), but I
enjoyed this

aftershow much much more.

Maybe it is because I haven't read/posted much online... my music
appreciation frame of reference is less fettered with chatter.

I can understand why people use setlists to guage a performance...
because
they want to see new songs, new material, or see if there are any
changes
from before, as an indication of artistic growth. But to me that's
like
comparing a grocery list to the cooked meal. As a performer there
are few
"top chefs" out there like Prince who can take what appears on the
surface

to be a run-of-the-mill list and turn it into a gourmet meal.

And I felt he did that last night. I started to take notes on a set
list and
a few songs into the show I stopped. I stopped because the note-
taking was
taking away from my enjoyment of the show. I stopped because the
note-taking
was forcing me to experience the show in a kind of "melted ice
cream" kind

of way. You ever accidentally left ice cream out? It melts and all the
ingredients kind of separate... putting it back into the freezer
will not
bring those ingredients back together again in the original mix that
would
have been as enjoyable as it was intended. So I said, hell I better
eat this
ice cream while it's good. I put away the pen and the paper, and
just took

the show in.

Sorry if people are looking to get the basic ingredients/set list
from me.
Not going to happen. Instead I'm going to convey the taste, the
overall vibe

and energy. If you're the type who eats food trying to figure out what
ingredients went into it, be my guest--you'll find enough of that on
this

thread. But I'm just trying to savor the moment because there *was*
something special at last night's aftershow to me... and I'm going
to try to

put my finger on it.

(First, as a disclosure, I was one of the lucky recipients of the HQ
contest

for the aftershow. For that I am truly grateful! It meant, among other
things, Ruth (who was just one of the nicest, professionals I've
encountered
who is tasked with the awesome responsibility of assisting a
megatalent like
Prince) escorted winners into the performance venue before the
public was
let in... so I got close up to the stage, right in front of the
steps in the
front right. I've been up front before, so this was not necessarily
reason
for a positive experience or review. But I am not going to lie... it
helps
:) It also means that as a contest winner we were each given one of
those

beautiful O(+> wax candle holders as a gift.

Ok so on to the show... I have to admit that I had grown weary of
Prince's
tendency to perform so many covers of other people's songs. Reading
reports
of the last two years (last time I saw him was at Butter two years
ago), I
went into the aftershow not expecting much. But while I stood there
watching
the show, it struck me that Prince is more interested in making his
show

about MUSIC rather than just PRINCE MUSIC.

Even though he is the star attraction and may have an offstage ego
of a
star, it's a kind of artistic humility on stage that I found
endearing last
night. His very jazzman-like democratic sharing of solos, and his
clear

homages to music he's love over the years of his life. Once I stopped
fretting about "why isn't he playing his music" I realized that in a
strange

way this wasn't about HIM.

Prince became this iPod of great music, and plucked one song after
another,
that he performed, reinvented, reinvigorated, improvised, solo'd,
clowned,
danced, sang, strummed, shook, that made it clear that yes you are
hearing
Earth Wind & Fire, or Ron Woods, or India Arie, but make no mistake
about it
this is a PRINCE concert. This was no karaoke, phone in performance.
The
rhythm guitar licks were SICK. The screams on pitch (I hadn't heard
Prince

deliver a good scream since 2004 Musicology days), his vocal control
precise, and his athleticism took him all over every available space
on the

small stage

NPNY: 21 Nights Afterparty Reivew

2008-10-11 Thread Andrew Stanger
I put this up on HQ and wanted to post here too...

All the reports are great. I was at the aftershow. Anything happen after
NPS? I took all the songs down on the my iphone but see setlists already up.
Some random notes...

Prince came out wearing black pants and a white sweater with a long white
scarf. Started with glasses but took them off early. For the second half -
black pants and orange blouse-like shirt with a big necklace - might be the
same one from the first show.

It was very organized for a prince aftershow. I was worried as it was my gfs
first show and I didn't want her to have a bad experience. We got there at
11. Took a little bit of time to check our name and get a wristband (no
tickets :(
Waited in line - got to chat with Z for a bit.
We got let into the hotel at 12:25 or so.
Up the elevator. Out into the bar.
This was the only bad queue - waiting by the bar crushed a little to get
through one door into the small room with the stage. Only about 15 mins
though.
Room was packed but breathable.

Completely agree with Z about the setlist vs actually being there. It was an
amazing show., Probably the best aftershow I've been to. Did go to irving
plaza a few years ago with Larry and Chaka that was great and didn't go to
the World one during ONA so that one might have been better. The covers were
all great - many I haven't heard at all and many I haven't heard prince do
live. He did a good amount of his own songs - Purple Rain seemed a little
out of place with such a rock and then r&b show but he seems to have to do
it for folks. 3 hours of prince is amazing. And hearing him do Shhh (one of
my favs) and then the time/Sheila songs were awesome. That was a highlight
for me - hearing prince cover a prince band and do the bird and jungle love.
He was in a great mood - maybe best I've ever seen, jamming, dancing, funk
face, funny faces, interacting with the crowd.

thanks

Listening to the cd right now but would like to have a concert cd and an

musicology too. The cd is cool though. Would've liked more pics of prince
around london and of course performing...

NPNY: Prince Weekend

2008-06-10 Thread Andrew Stanger
A quick overview of my Prince Weekend...

Friday night went to the yankees game (have season tix). They usually do a
music choice where the players are asked to choose between 3 songs by one
artist. On Friday night they showed an old one with Prince - I believe the
three songs were Kiss, LGC, and Raspberry Beret. Let's Go Crazy won. The
Yankees on the other hand...not so much. Not sure if they showed again on
Sat.

Sat - went to a bachelor party at a racetrack in NJ during the day and
represented with my True Funk Soldier shirt. Bet on a horse that bucked off
its jockey within thirty seconds. Not a good day at the races for Andy.

Night - represented with my vintage Purple Rain tour shirt and went to BB
Kings to see Days of Wild. First time I ever saw them and they were pretty
good. The version of Get Off - a little fast but ended with a great version
of DMSR and Turn Me Loose. They announced an after party at Bitter End at
1pm with a special guest.

After the show - headed over to the Zipper Factory for the Burlesque show.
The Zipper Factory restaurant, bar area, and theatre were really cool. In a
somewhat run down area but get past that and check it out. The show was
really, really cool. Never been to a Burlesque show before. The dance
interpretations to prince's music were great, the DJ spun a lot of related
artist stuff (Mutiny!), and a singer performed the Cross and Nothing
Compares 2 U which became a sing along. Best act of the night...Little Red
Corvette - girl started out dressed as a mechanic and made good use of a
wrench and a car battery with jumper cables. And just in case they're kids
on the list - I'll leave it at that.

That ended close to 1 or so. With a prince dance party following. My friend
Ally and I ran out and went down to the Bitter End. Got there a little after
2pm. As we walked in...Mayte and 3 other folks (assuming one guy was her
boyfriend) were walking out. I stared at her wondering if that was really
here and a guy walking out with her said - "Yep - that's her." I didn't
talk to her just waved when she looked back inside before walking away. I
should've got a picture with her on my phone, especially as I was wearing a
Prince shirt. Well too bad. I thought she might have been the special guest
but I asked the last singer of DOW and he had no clue she was there...Crazy!

That's it...

NPNY: Re: Sly Show

2007-12-24 Thread Andrew Stanger
I was there on 12/7 - second show. A few rows back from the stage -
right side.

Lucky prince didn't come - world of difference between stevie wonder
at MSG and the sly shows. Don't know how many people will attend sly
shows with all the bad press.

The first few songs were good and then it just seemed to spiral
downhill.

option at
the time. Here's the report I sent to my friends after the
show.Well, for

my
money, I got my money's worth. It certainly didn't suck at all.
Now, at

this
point, my
expectations were lessened, but I don't think they were that
monstrous

having seen him on the awards show last year. All in all, he was
very solid for the first half hour, came in and out with the band for
next half hour and the band played another 30 minutes after that. We
heard a lot of great tunes including "If You Want me to Stay" and
"Hot
Fun in the Summertime" and a smokin' version of "Sing a Simple
Song". I

thought the band was very good and not nearly as confused as you had
mentioned. They watched Sly and picked it up when he dropped back.
All
in all the show (which didn't start until 12 am) cooked all the way
up

to 1:15 and the band looked like it wanted to stay on longer, though
Sly certainly didn't have the stamina. Doing a little internet
research

this morning, I am listening to a live show from '68 at the Fillmore
East that lasted only 53 minutes. I'm also noting that Sly's shows
back
in the day started notoriously late and he was generally late or
didn't

show at all, so it seems we did see vintage Sly.

http://concerts.wolfgangsvault.com/dt/sly-and-the-family-stone/580-6533.html

Lastly, though the price was high, I think it was proportionate to
the
quality of the act in the size of the venue. Legitimately, he could
have
easily filled the Beacon at $45 and that would have just sucked.
I'd rather
pay twice as much to see him in a small club like B B King's. The
crowd

really enjoyed it and despite the long wait for the show, everybody
generally walked out very happy.Moral of the story, if you do see
Sly, go

to
the second show.

Two questions...

Reading the reviews on 3121 - what song is Shadow and Chains that Prince is
playing? I googled but didn't really see anything.

I've been on a buying spree of prince related dvds/related artists albums -
can we talk about trading stuff on here or are we not allowed by the Prince
police?

You mean baby knows? I like both of those songs but again my opinion.

We all have music styles we like. And styles of Prince music we like.
I really haven't liked his ballads on the last few albums - I want another
adore, insatiable, do me baby. I don't think Call My Name, Satisfied, Future
Baby Mamma really live up to it.

My favorite song of the last few albums is Black Sweat which some of you
probably hate - but I love the falsetto, straight funk groove Prince.

I bought it too. 10 at best buy. Nothing interesting besides the Lenticular

Re: NPNY: New York Guide to Prince...

2007-07-18 Thread Andrew Stanger

Well if it is a cute, single female she can visit my apt. Tons of
prince items there. Just kidding.

Maybe the hard rock in times sq has some prince items. Or some of the
record stores in the village might have stuff.

Or go to the groove on a fri or sat. Raj usually covers some prince.

NPNY: Planet Earth and the Perfume

2007-07-17 Thread Andrew Stanger
You can listen to planet earth right now on MSN radio:

http://music.msn.com/music

Also, does anyone want the box set from the 3121 perfume. Comes with two
bottles of perfume and a body creme.
It comes in a nice purple box with a gold "metal" 3121 logo. Was 77 + 5
shipping and handling. I like the box but really don't need the perfume.
Must
live in NY though so we can meet up somewhere.

So I can't believe the prices for Prince in Las Vegas this month.

Tickets went from $125 to $175 to $250. I guess the Rio is trying to
make as much money before he leaves.
Weird right?

I'm glad I saw him opening weekend in November for $125 per night. I
would've liked to see an aftershow in the restaurant but I'll live.

Bring on the tour!

Best Super Bowl halftime advanced news conference ever yesterday.
Usually a bleary eyed performer sits and thanks sponsors and such. But
Prince, who will headline the Super Bowl XLI extravaganza, apparently
did not want to talk. So he sang and played instead.

After some yada yada from Pepsi officials, Prince and his
entire band , including backup singers, took the stage for three songs.
Prince faked out reporters, walking to the mike and saying that contrary
to rumor, he was going to answer questions. Then, when somebody tried to
ask one, he launched into "Johnny B Goode."

That was followed by " Anotherloverholenyohead" and "Get On

dance at news conferences, unless of course, Andy Reid is laying down

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Prince unveiled a low-production but high-energy show as he
debuted a new weekly casino gig, while giving no indication that he plans to
become the next Wayne Newton.
Prince will perform shows for the next several Friday and Saturday nights in
the 3121 club at The Rio casino-hotel just off the Las Vegas Strip.
The show Friday included an even mix of classics and new material, guitar
solos, soulful ballads and funk. His racy hits, such as "Cream" and "Kiss,"
were a contrast to the tamer songs released since the star became a
Jehovah's Witness.
"You don't have to be dirty to be sexy," Prince advised the audience, before
launching into a sweet love song. "Let me show you."
The move to Las Vegas surprised fans who have dubbed the star _ now more
than 20 years past his megahit album and movie "Purple Rain" _ a pop, funk
and soul innovator. Las Vegas, a place once known for showcasing stars in
the twilight of their careers, wasn't expected.
But organizers and bandmates say the man who once changed his name to a
soundless symbol is simply taking his own tack again.
"I think he wants to bring a new element to Vegas; that's the whole point,
to bring a new, fresh vibe," said Maya McClean, a Prince spokeswoman and
half of the back-up group performing with the star, The Twinz.
The shows are expected to run "a couple of months" before the group goes on
tour, McLean said.

NPNY: Prince vs Ebay

2006-11-07 Thread Andrew Stanger
Prince is f***ing crazy. I bought two tickets to each show in Las Vegas.
My friend can't go anymore so I put them up on ebay for
$140/ticket...the 125 plus the tm charges. Had a bid on each and some
watchers and the auction was going to end today at around 11:30am. So I
get this email this morning. See below. What the f*** gives him the
right to take the tickets off of ebay. Most of the other ones are gone
too...if you know anyone that needs a ticket to either show, let me
know. I contacted the person that bid on both so hopefully she still
wants one or both. CRAZY

A few comments about all the vegas stuff...

I bought two tickets to each show but not sure if my friend is actually
going...thought the shows would sell out but I don't think they have
yet.

I am going to be out in vegas for work from thurs to Monday staying at
Treasure Island. Flights from NY and rooms are tough out there because
there is the AAO meeting for ophthalmologists. About 20K attend. I'm
working at the Pfizer booth and that's why I was lucky enough to be out
there already.

I called the restaurant and got a reservation for Thursday the 9th at
8pm. Not sure what the heck I'm doing with it but thought I would keep
it anyway.

That's my deal for nowif anyone cares :)

My brother who lives out there in NYC and is part of an events planning

of time and money would be spent getting the party right...Who would be
interested in something like this. He's looking at the Sat be4
Thanksgiving most likely. I live in Hawaii but will be out visiting that
entire week. I'm being transferred to South Korea the first week of
January and would like to have one hell of a Prince party...Here's the

what U think and if there's enough serious interest--it'll be on! I know

RE: NPNY: WNPNY Podcast?

2006-10-25 Thread Andrew Stanger
I think this is an awesome idea and would love to participate/help etc.
Don't know how good my radio voice is being that singing prince songs in
my car for ten years equals me squeaking and cracking like a teenager.

My brother has a podcast called Mac Attack that is pretty popular so I
can always ask him for advice.

I think every two weeks or monthly is good, any more and it gets tough
to keep up.

I think you have everything below that I could think of. The only
addition would be adding some related artist music or new artist music.
One of the things I like about Joe's show and some local r&b bands I see
(one being Carlton J Smith at BB Kings) is that they turn me on to new
music.

Cool!

I am big fan of the Firefly/Serenity podcast. They are very well done
and remind alot of the Online Prince community before Prince discovered
the internet.

I have been kicking around the idea of starting one about Prince for a
few months and I need some input.

Here is quick outline of what I was considering:
- 30-60 Minutes bi-weekly or monthly
- News/Rumors
- Album Review Roundtable [where 3 or 4 other join me]
- Concert Reviews and Information
- Associated Artist - News, Information
- Song Analyst
- Listeners Submissions [Prince themed articles, peotry, etc.]
- Emails/Voicemails Feedback

What do you think? Anything you would add take away? Anyone interested
in contributing, I am probably going to need a co-host for this. Don't
like
the idea of talking to myself Hehe [Anyone want to audition?]

RE: NPNY: For the Prince historians...

2006-08-22 Thread Andrew Stanger
I would call his current state Sporadic. He does this amazing comeback
with Musicology - record, tour etc and then squanders it over a two year
period. First he doesn't release a live cd or dvd. Then he pretty much
disappears for two years besides a few tv appearances. Then he comes
back with a good album and hits number 1. Then...no tour, no promotion,
web site wins an award...he takes in down probably to stop discussion
about his marriage. The entire Tamar thing seems like it will be a bust.
The purple ticket contest should've generated a lot of press...a bust.
3121 had a ton of potential and he dropped the ball. Musicology could've
been much bigger but he dropped the ball there too...no European tour,
no live dvd, cd. He was so ahead of everybody else with the music club
site - building a fan community etc. All he had to do was start
releasing more music. Every month release a new album of previously
unreleased material. Would have been a huge money maker but nope.
Ok...enough of my rant.

Two questions. The man himself or just his music? Is there an online
version?

NPNY: Maceo and Prince in June

2006-06-05 Thread Andrew Stanger
Maceo is playing June 14 at Irving Plaza and June 15 in Prospect
Park...maybe he'll show up on the 16th?

Also - us NPNYers going to try to wear our NPNY shirts on June 16th or
to each their own?

Re: NPNY: 3121 Sales For The Week of 5.15.06

2006-05-19 Thread Andrew Stanger
Hey at least it isn't the "Come On" video. Te amo and black sweat were
good videos. Fury is a little lame. I think the one, greatest romance,
musicology and cinamon girl were good videos from ones he's done lately. I
really liked cinnamon girl. Is the studio he's been using lately at 3121
in la? Also, in fury, I hate the 5 or so people that are in front of the
stage. Either have no one, or a bunch of extras. Not 5.

Boy if I were Prince I would never make a video again... you guys are
tough. Will you ever be happy again?
If you want the excitement of old... look back to your DVD's and VHS
recordings. Prince is not a young man anymore. Still funky, but he
cant be expected to dance around on stage and in videos anymore.

NPNY: in defense of Derek

2006-05-11 Thread Andrew Stanger
Guys can we all stop bashing Derek. He's a funny guy - and sometimes
that may possibly hurt someone's feelings. It happens. You know it isn't
done to be mean and you move on. He's been providing a service to us for
years - connecting all of us, updating us when he gets some info, and
giving us a place to meet up and all share in the purple psychosis we
all have. I consider Derek a friend - he's a good guy. He doesn't have
to moderate the list, it is a lot of work and he does it because he
likes prince and it is nice to connect nyers that all have the same
interest. The get-togethers were fun and I look forward to more when he
starts touring. I've met some really great people through this list and
I don't think there would be one without Derek. So cut the guy some
slack, appreciate his humor, and be happy he does this for us.

Andy
