I have alse created a page http://wiki.contextgarden.net/ConTeXt_Minimals, but that one needs to be improved (too much junk on it - wiki pages need to be short and clear, else nobody reads them). Hans has not updated his distribution since August (which means that there are still old binaries ond fonts) and we're working on improving the new minimals at the moment. [NTG-context] week of wiki 1: call for "installation instructions"
Dear ConTeXt felows, Wiki has been sleeping for a long time. Specifically, some topics change considerably over time, but wiki pages do not, and so newbie users are completely confused. I would like to announce "The First Week of Wiki: Improving the Installation Instructions" http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Category:Installation Take this page for example: http://wiki.contextgarden.net/TeTeX_3.0_installation It should more-or-less disapear (it may be left for historical reasons in quarantine, but other than that, it should not confuse people!!!) So, I have a little request: can we devote one week (or 10 days if neded) for improvement of installation instructions? This means: - improve a generic page (Installation) with links, general notes about dependencies (ruby, perl), general settings (\useMPTEXgraphicstrue, \preloadtypescripts, write18, texexec --make --all, ctxtools --updatecontext, ..), release notes - three (or slightly more) main pages: Windows Installation, Mac Installation, Linux Installation - Linux Installation may have links to Debian Installation or to Installation from source or similar, but we certainly do not need dozens of different pages for the same thing (Debian TeXlive install, Debian installation, TeX-live) - an template for obsolete stuff (what to do with Aleph? - it's not supported any more anyway) Etc. The topic to follow should probably be about fonts or hello world documents. But we should start somewhere. Actually there's more to it, Greek letters seem to be given a weird treatment: when trying the sample file Vassilis posted, I see vowels with tonos are rendered as an apostrophe followed by the Latin equivalent letter (!), and -- except for the capital Kappa -- the other letters are obviously taken from Latin Modern Math Italic (so the absence of the glyphs from the roman fonts is not such a problem, but the result is typographically very poor). Sorry if I am wasting your time -- if > there is a good "RTFM" answer I would not mind. ConTeXt Live didn't work because the default font (Latin Modern) has almost no Greek glyphs present. You need to use another font, but then again - the garden might be lacking good greek fonts. You shold add at least \usetypescript[antykwa-torunska] \setupbodyfont[antykwa] and choose XeTeX or LuaTeX. But then again - I bothered Taco so much about the urge to upload the latest version of ConTeXt to CTAN, and completely forgot that the latest LM font release broke the ConTeXt live as well. ConTeXt live is based on TeX Live 2007 + latest ConTeXt - we will probably move it to use the "new minimals". In the meantime I will try to replace the Latin Modern fonts. The misfunction of live ConTeX should not be the showstopper. Re: [NTG-context] ConTeXt book
Hi all, Indeed the documents mentioned by Taco are great, but some time ago there was a discussion on the list about an update of those manuals (dating from 1999, according to the colofon) and about how we users can contribute to the job by finding the possible bugs, errors, misprints, etc. But us far as I know we, at least I, didn't do anything… Now in my opinion the idea of having a book is a good one: for instance many of my students when writing reports and theses ask me about a book on TeX or LaTeX, even though there are many electronic documents about them freely available. Our library has the books by Donald Knuth, Leslie Lamport and Raymond Séroul among others, and if there were a book about ConTeXt I would certainly order at least two for our library and one for myself. For making ConTeXt more popular among mathematicians (or other academic users) I think it is good to have books about it in libraries, since at first students look for books before sticking to one of TeX flavors. Re: [NTG-context] ConTeXt book
Hello, i think it would be great to have some basic documentation published. My idea is to create "Basic ConTeXt guide" with start documentation for new user. This is what should be in: 1. Chapter: What is ConTeXt, what it included, which are basic modules, what is needed to start with Context, maybe something about instalation 2. Chapter: first document step by step, second document (something like on contexgarden, maybe little longer step by step) 3. Chapter: my first letter ( how to write little longer document "in style") 4. Chapter: Formating - quick introduction in text aligment,, fonts (size and format), tables, how to setup setups page design (mergins...) 5. Chapter: How to create simple presentation 6. Tips and Tricks (maybe some FAQ explained) Appedix A: Table of math symbols with examples (like sum, matrix...) Appedix B: Article From Latex to Context .. Now my question: are we able to create some book like this? And would be users interested to buy/use it? Jan -- Macs are for those who don't want to know why their computer works. Re: [NTG-context] Unicode greek in Context
Hi Vassilis, short answer because I'm on the run right now: you could either try to typeset your example with ConTeXt + XeTeX; this should work "out of the box." Or you could try my Greek module (lookn on the contextgarden under "third party modules"). It's designed for ancient Greek but should work with the modern variety as well. If you want more support for typographical conventions of modern Greek, it should be fairly easy to implement that yourself. And welcome to ConTeXt!
