Wolfgang, seems that you should update your context minimal to
reproduce this problem.

 Hi,

Today when I updated the newest beta, I found that Chinese breaking
lines failed. This is a simple test file:

 %%
 \definefontfeature
  [zh][mode=node,script=hang,lang=zhs]
 \definefontsynonym
  [SongTi][AdobeSongStd-Light][features=zh]
 \definefont
  [song][SongTi at 12pt]

 \starttext
 \song

 天下事有难易乎?为之,则难者易易也。
 不为,则易者易难也。蜀之鄙有二僧,其一贫,其一富。
 贫者语于富者曰:吾欲之南海何如?

 \stoptext
 %%

The attachment with this mail is the PDF file which I got by compiling
 the example as above.

I noticed that the font-ini.mkiv was modified in newest beta (because
I manage the beta with git in my machine). Maybe the problem is
 related to it.

Is the function backends.pdf.insertmovie in core-inc.lua a part of
unfinished effort or simply broken or dead-end?

On the other hand, if there is no way now to create 3D annotation for
u3d externalfigure in luatex/context combination, then another way is to
include a pdf file with 3d annotation.

Is there any way in luatex/context to include a pdf file with annotations
(without losing them). Not necessary embedding it into a page, but also as
a separate page, embedded file stream opening in a separate window, a
reference to a separate file with a relative path - anything less ugly
than an URL to some web location.

   Sincerely, Michail

Hi,

I was able to reproduce Thomas problem with xml files.

Part of his text was missing because he had a space after his
element in the file which caused ConTeXt to gobble the following text
till the end of the paragraph.

In the following text the second line in the second paragraph has
a space at the end of the line and the two lines with b's did not

Dear Michail,

No. Minimals are just a distribution. You can use whatever engine you
want. There's no default engine.
You can say --engines=luatex or --engines=pdftex when you install
minimals, but the default is just --engines=all.

If you process you files with texexec, the default engine will be
pdftex, but you can also use "texexec --xtx" or "texexec --lua". If
you process your files with "context", the default (only possible?)
engine will be LuaTeX.

The more important question is where the most development is
happening. And there has recently been hardly any development in
pdfTeX/mkii, which is even more true for future.

LuaTeX/mkiv is still a bit unstable, but more fun to use.

2008-11-28 Thread Mojca Miklavec
Luigi,

you caught me in the middle of writing an email to the list.
Subject: [OT] The great new ConTeXt magazine (aka MAPS) is out :)

I would like to tell everyone on the list:
*** MAPS is a wonderful magazine for ConTeXt fans. ***
*** Any ConTeXt addict should consider joining NTG. ***

I didn't manage to read the "Editorial" yet (I always start browsing
magazines & reading from the last side towards the first one), but my
first impression was: h ... what do the poor Dutch LaTeX users do
with the magazine? (Not counting the two additional ConTeXt articles
that should be part of the issue but have not been written by the
deadline.)

NTG got about 6 new members during the conference, two Germans saying
that they would go to DANTE, but they only publish articles about
LaTeX. One could probably say the reverse for MAPS :) :) :)

A few years ago NTG kept organising wonderful NTG meetings. Since the
first ConTeXt user meeting those have been greatly reduced. I hope
that MAPS *will* stay the Dutch magazine. Luckily, Taco has enough
programming to do in order not to come to the idea: "what if we
started publishing a ConTeXt magazine" :) :) :)

FreeBSD-i386 version of LuaTeX 0.30.3 (released today) and MetaPost
1.100 (released yesterday) should be in the minimals distribution in a

Am I correct to assume that the default engine in minimals is luatex?

On the other hand, I do not need movies, I am looking for code that
makes PDF annotation to handle particular file type of externalfigure.
And current movie inclusion code is marked as buggy and using obsolete pdf
features in commets anyway.

But where to look for luatex-related code to use as an example and
starting point for u3d handling?

   Sincerely, Michail

Hi Wolfgang,

thanks for your suggestions! I tried solutions 1-3, but I still get
the same result; the paragraph is skipped (hey, what about #3: are you
leading me into temptation to use low-level code?!). #4: I have tried

check if the same thing happens on my linux installation.
Unfortunately, the file is pretty long and contains some additional
modules and fonts, or I'd send it to you to see if it compiles OK on

couldn't...)

All best, and thanks a lot

The attachment with this mail is the PDF file which I got by compiling
the example as above.

I noticed that the font-ini.mkiv was modified in newest beta (because
I manage the beta with git in my machine). Maybe the problem is

I don't if this will help you but you can try the following three changes.

1. Change the defintion of \sln

\define\sln{\startcolor[red][\nextSlideNumber]\stopcolor}

2. Put a \relax after the xml setup for \sln

\startxmlsetups xml:sln
   \sln\relax
\stopxmlsetups

3. define \SlideNumber as TeX counter

\newcount\SlideNumber

\def\resetSlideNumber
  {\global\SlideNumber\zerocount\relax}

\def\incrementSlideNumber
  {\global\advance\SlideNumber\plusone\relax}

\def\currentSlideNumber
  {\number\SlideNumber\relax}

\def\nextSlideNumber
  {\incrementSlideNumber
   \currentSlideNumber}

(4. Switch the system or TeX installation, helped on my former
Windows installation with font problems)

Hi Hans,

thanks for answering this inaccurate report. No, adding \relax to the
xmlsetup did not solve the problem. Maybe I should try grouping or
sprinkling around \relax in other places of my definitions?

Just btw: I reported a similar problem this spring:
http://archive.contextgarden.net/message/20080324.212853.4a4abc6c.en.html

and realized later that again linebreaks are the culprit. From what I
have understood, this is basically impossible: mkiv xml parsing uses
the LPEG mechanism which doesn't see linebreaks as anything special.
Nevertheless, I have these cases where introducing a linebreak makes
elements from the xml tree disappear, removing it makes everything
work. I'll keep an eye on it (and am aware that there may not be an
immediate solution).

Best

in such cases you run into lookahead of macros; adding a \relax helps

\startxmlsetups xml:sln
\sln\relax
\stopxmlsetups

of so; let me know if this solves the problem

[NTG-context] xml parsing

2008-11-28 Thread Thomas A. Schmitz
Hi all, Hans,

this is a terribly inaccurate bug report, and I apologize for its
form, but it's something you and other people might want to look at.
Or maybe I should change my files, I don't know. Here comes:

SUMMARY

The new mkiv xml parser sometimes "eats" parts of my xml files when
they are typeset. It appears to skip parts of text between two tags.

DESCRIPTION

I have no minimal example, just a description: for my lectures, I have
defined a counter to tell me when I want to show the next slide:

\definelabel[SlideNumber][headstyle=normal,way=bytext]

\define\sln{\color[red]{ [\nextSlideNumber]}}

For my xml files, I have wrapped this into a xml command:

\startxmlsetups xml:sln
\sln
\stopxmlsetups

This works wonderfully in most cases. To make my source file more
readable, I usually code

foo

bar

In this case, the xml parser SOMETIMES (not reproducibly,
unfortunately) skips the "bar" part up to the next paragraph tag.
When I take away the line break and write

foo bar

the "bar" part appears normally.

ANECDOTE

I write my lectures in xml so I can put them on a website for my
students, and I deliver them from typeset notes. This happened to me
last Tuesday. I had typeset and printed my notes, and then while
lecturing realized that an entire paragraph was missing. I could ad-
lib it, but this is not something you want to happen at an important
job-talk...

ALl best

Thomas

Renaud's "u3d" inclusion macros seem to be modeled after "mov" inclusion.
But including movies does not work for me in minimals (see my post on that).

 Sincerely, Michail

I'm not sure what your question is. Have you tried the solution I've
given? Is it working? If you use the customize command, this will
write to your .emacs file.
