[NTG-context] absolute positioning?
Hello! What is the current most contextish way for absolute positioning of text (still using MK II)? I have to create a title page for a document where several frameless boxes of text have to be placed on the page. Is this still the layer mechanism? I mean, ConTeXt evolves so quickly, being absent for one real year means being absent for about 10 ConTeXt-years. Hi Wolfgang, seems like you have nearly finished your thesis Well, concerning time: yes. concerning progress: no. and yes, layers are still the tool of your choice, especially the framed alternative \setlayerframed. You can pass font changes to the framed part with the setups command or set special backgrounds to the frame. OK, I'll give it a try and post an example on the wiki. Thanks! Hello Hans, But also much bigger. Having an ubuntu/context (vmware) image is not hard to create, but it will take something like 2 gig. Nice idea, though. so much? With a lot of effort one could cut it down a bit. The problem is that there is no way to get a minimal ubuntu/gnome desktop, only the regular one with all kinds of software (open office etc.) pre installed. You can remove this software, but I don't know how far to go. It takes some time experimenting. I've played around with this quite a bit and I always get about 2 gig of disk space. Without java, this could be 1.5 or so. Installing such a vm (vmware based) takes about 10-20 minutes, including all vmware hacks. So this is the smallest part. Re: [NTG-context] Reorganization of the main page
Hi, Missing the wiki-only search feature though. OK, you're number two. I'll think about it. Here's why Patrick: a wiki being a source of documentation, that's where I look for next when not finding something in the paper manuals and texshow. If I don't find it there, digging deeper through the mailing archive is useful. Having everything mixed up through one google search blurb is oftentimes confusing due to the lack of structure. But the wiki search really sucks. Search for example for 'my Way': no matches found. I'd like to have a solution where we only have one search box (google) which only searches the wiki by default. @Mojca: can this be done? Also, when a newbie reads texshow-web (s)he doesn't have a clue what that means. Jano Kula suggested to rename it to reference or sth. like that. I'll do so. Reference of what ? of all commands. It is better then texshow(-web). Other suggestions? - live context - Try out ConTeXt online - download - Download the ConTeXt application - download area - Download examples, 3rd party modules, articles, MyWay reports, ... Way too long to fit into the left box! Some other ideas... - A clearly visible (colored ?) banner or link on top of the main page saying something like If you're new to ConTeXt, click here to get started fast... which redirects to the main page Getting Started section might be useful. See Aditya's suggestion. Would this be OK? - http://wiki.contextgarden.net/ConTeXt_Minimals The Minimals are an attempt to provide the same functionality as the current Pragma's minimal ConTeXt distributions in the zip files. Etc... They will be renamed to either distribution or official distribution and the only supported way of installing context. This is quite confusing for a newbie: If I install the ConTeXt Minimals, what will I be missing what's in the Pragma's minimal distribution ? This is absolutely true. Re: [NTG-context] xml and lua again
context.blackrule{ width = number.topoints(tex.dimen[textwidth]/2) } or just tex.dimen[textwidth]/2 .. sp Wait, just so I understand: your solution would imply that tex.dimen[textwidth] holds a number, not a dimension, right? (Because you simply concatenate it with a dimension unit). Which makes sense when I think of it because lua has no concept of dimensions, only of strings, functions, tables, numbers... Whereas the Wolfgang implies that the result is already in sp. So who's right? both :) tex.dimen holds a number, that is the size in points, multiplied by 65536/1pt, so for example 3pt becomes 3pt * 65536 --- = 3 * 65536 = 196608 1pt This number is also known sp. So if you store the number 3*65536 in tex.dimen[...], you can say: my width is \directlua{ tex.dimen[...] / 2}sp (results to my width is 196608sp, which you can use as an argument to whatever needs a length) or my width is \directlua{ number_to_points(tex.dimen[...]) } where number_to_points is something like number_to_points = function (amount_in_sp) in_pt = tostring(amount_in_sp / 65536) return in_pt .. pt end which gives 3pt. [NTG-context] small new feature on the wiki
Hi there, since there might be some users here who edit pages on the wiki and who don't read the 'recent changes' page: you can now say context source=yes text=produces \your \TeX \code=here /context this will typeset the source with the texcode/texcode highlighter/formatter, then output the (optional) text 'produces', and finally renders the already known graphical representation of the source. Hello Aditya, [...] context source=yes text=produces \your \TeX \code=here /context This is great for creating new code as well as editing existing one. However, is it possible to change the width of the image that is created. I fine the default A4 paper width to be too large and ususally add a \setuplayout[width=13cm] in the context code. Is it possible to do this with the new feature? If we agree on a common page size, I could easily put it in there. If we don't agree on one, I could perhaps say context source=... width=13cm. I can't promise that it would be done right away, but I'd write it down and implement it when I find some time. is it possible to install current as well as the beta and let users choose via a radio button? I don't distinguish between stable and beta. I always install the latest, but I could implement a menu/button that chooses the installed version. Re: [NTG-context] How to use the wiki?
Hello Taco (old mail warining) Sorry for that stupid question, but what it the process to add something to the wiki? I can edit existing page, but in which topic or page one can add something? Is an account required? Is there a list of the pages added by the users? The wiki itself doesn't seem to have many information about this. You were looking for this page: http://wiki.contextgarden.net/How_to_edit_wiki_pages Patrick, it would make sense to have this in the left menu, yes? I have changed the 'Help' link in the navigation portlet to point to the mentioned page. Or would you suggest an alternative? Making an extra link? In any case, this page should be completed. But: perhaps the page http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Help:Editing should be used instead as the main help page, because this is the page that gets linked to when you edit a page (Editing help (opens in new window)). [NTG-context] solved: context rendering disabled on contextgarden / new distribution?
Hi, The sysops are working to get it working again. I'll report back if things are working correctly. ConTeXt seems to be working again. BTW: Mojca has suggested to install a newer version of pdftex (currently 3.141592-1.21a-2.2) on the server. Which distribution would you prefer? The requirements: * debian 3.1 (Intel) * no cdrom available, no ability to mount loopback devices * almost no space limit * I don't want to update the distribution more often then once a year. Re: [NTG-context] solved: context rendering disabled on contextgarden / new distribution?
Hmm, wouldn't it be best to just update pdftex alone, without anything else? Yes, this could be an option, right. I didn't think of that choice. You don't need any cdrom or loopbacks for that. Or what exactly do you mean when you say distribution? Such as 'tetex', 'texlive' or the minimal distribution from PRAGMA ADE. Is your server used for any TeX-related work other than providing the backend for the garden? No. Thanks for the feedback, (and still collecting wishes) Patrick -- ConTeXt wiki and more: http://contextgarden.net ___ ntg-context mailing list ntg-context@ntg.nl http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context

Hello Wolfgang, [...] Btw. for me (MSIE 5.5) the texshow page is not working. I see the left frame and the right only for home, help and special. Re: [NTG-context] TextMate bundle
Hello Steffen, 1) The snipped feature uses the tab key for triggering *further* information, right? right. (If I remember correctly) I knew a similar feature (was it in AlphaX/Tk?) where the tab helped me to *complete* the command. For example: \cha + tab gave \chapter or when not clear like: \sub + tab gave a range with all commands starting with \sub... to choose. Enter \sub and press the escape key (several times). Then you can use the tab key for further information. In textmate triggering the snipped with tab just works when typed the entire \chapter, right? right. There is no-one helping me typing when I get lazy? If you are too lazy to hit the escape key, then yes :) 2) You assigned F9 to texexec and so on. (btw: I'll probably change that to cmd-R for the sake of compatibility to existing textmate standards) When, for some rare reason, I need to change the texexec a bit (with additional options or such), where to do so? find the 'texexec' command in the bundle editor: Bundles - Bundle-Editor - Edit Commands. (In the ConTeXt bundle of course.) If you think that your changes are useful for other users, please share them! The internals will change in the future. 3) Probably a similar (stupid) question: You wrote the variable PDF_VIEWER, the default is 'Preview'. You can try anything that you can use as an argument for 'open'... Well, where do I find this in order to have a try? See http://macromates.com/textmate/manual/environment_variables 9.4 (at the very end). Does this information already help you? Re: [NTG-context] TextMate bundle
Hi Steffen, Ahh! The escape-key!! On my machine (up to now) this was already assigned to enter snippet for Butler (by petermaurer.de). You can easily change the key to something else in the bundle editor. You wrote the variable PDF_VIEWER, the default is 'Preview'. You can try anything that you can use as an argument for 'open'... Well, where do I find this in order to have a try? See http://macromates.com/textmate/manual/environment_variables 9.4 (at the very end). Does this information already help you? Well, does it mean that I have to define a project-variable (tmproj) for each project in order to overwrite the default? Inside of ConTeXt.tmbundle I couldn't find a *.tmproj file ... the mentioning of 'tmproj' is a bit confusing, just ignore it. You have to set this variable from within TextMate. tmproj is just the file extension of the project file, there is nothing useful to edit there. When you create a project 'abc', it will get saved on the drive as 'abc.tmproj'. It has nothing to do with the bundles. There are two different places to set this variable: 1) (global) in textmate's preferences/advanced/shell variables and 2) (each project) in a project's preference window. This works only in a project and you have to follow the instructions on the given webpage: The way to do this is currently a little secret but if you deselect everything in the project drawer, then click the info (circled I) button, a panel will appear where you can set variables. For both ways, just click on the plus sign in the lower left corner of the window and enter for example Variable Value - PDF_VIEWER texniscope - HTH Patrick -- ConTeXt wiki and more: http://contextgarden.net ___ ntg-context mailing list ntg-context@ntg.nl http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context
