[NTG-context] absolute positioning?

2007-12-08 Thread Patrick Gundlach
Hello!

What is the current most contextish way for absolute positioning of
text (still using MK II)? I have to create a title page for a document
where several frameless boxes of text have to be placed on the page.
Is this still the layer mechanism? I mean, ConTeXt evolves so quickly,
being absent for one real year means being absent for about 10
ConTeXt-years.

Re: [NTG-context] absolute positioning?

2007-12-09 Thread Patrick Gundlach
Hi Wolfgang,

seems like you have nearly finished your thesis

Well, concerning time: yes. concerning progress: no.

and yes, layers are still the tool of your choice, especially the
framed alternative \setlayerframed. You can pass font changes to the
framed part with the setups command or set special backgrounds to
 the frame.

OK, I'll give it a try and post an example on the wiki.

Thanks!

[NTG-context] chapter without number but in table of contents

2007-12-15 Thread Patrick Gundlach
Hi,

I know that this must be an faq and I seem to have lost my context
knowledge:

I'd like to get an unnumbered chapter, but it should appear in the
table of contents. This is what I've tried so far:

--
\completecontent
[alternative=c]

\definehead[mychapter][chapter]
\setuphead [mychapter][number=no]

\mychapter [sec:somechapter]{Some Chapter Without A Number}
\input tufte

The chapter heading looks fine, but the entry is missing from the
table of contents. Any idea?

Don't ask me. I've used emacs and asked it (C-u C-x =) to get me

You could also use Unicode Checker for this kind of task. See

Another comment: could it be that your computer clock is one day back?

 so much?

With a lot of effort one could cut it down a bit. The problem is that
there is no way to get a minimal ubuntu/gnome desktop, only the
regular one with all kinds of software (open office etc.) pre
installed. You can remove this software, but I don't know how far to
go. It takes some time experimenting. I've played around with this
quite a bit and I always get about 2 gig of disk space. Without java,
this could be 1.5 or so. Installing such a vm (vmware based) takes
about 10-20 minutes, including all vmware hacks. So this is the
smallest part.

I'll do so.

Could you suggest some other names? I always have a hard time thinking
of some.

All these don't mean a thing to somebody who sees this page for the
 first time.

You're right.

 As for the logo...

 Who cares ?

Logo's don't enable people to figure out how to use software and be
 productive with it.

The proof is in the pudding, not in the logo.

Right, but presenting ConTeXt in a more professional way could be
worth an effort. A new logo is one step forward, even it will
disappear again in some day.

Re: [NTG-context] Reorganization of the main page

2008-08-27 Thread Patrick Gundlach
Hi,

Missing the wiki-only search feature though.

OK, you're number two. I'll think about it.

Here's why Patrick: a wiki being a source of documentation, that's where I
 look for next
when not finding something in the paper manuals and texshow. If I don't find
 it there,
digging deeper through the mailing archive is useful. Having everything
 mixed up through
one google search blurb is oftentimes confusing due to the lack of
 structure.

But the wiki search really sucks. Search for example for 'my Way': no
matches found.

I'd like to have a solution where we only have one search box (google)
which only searches the wiki by default. @Mojca: can this be done?

 Also, when a newbie reads texshow-web (s)he doesn't have a clue what
 that means.

Jano Kula suggested to rename it to reference or sth. like that.
 I'll do so.

 Reference of what ?

of all commands. It is better then texshow(-web). Other suggestions?

 - live context - Try out ConTeXt online
 - download - Download the ConTeXt application
 - download area - Download examples, 3rd party modules, articles,
 MyWay reports, ...

Way too long to fit into the left box!

 Some other ideas...

 - A clearly visible (colored ?) banner or link on top of the main page
saying something like If you're new to ConTeXt, click here to get started
fast... which redirects to the main page Getting Started section might be
 useful.

See Aditya's suggestion. Would this be OK?

The Minimals are an attempt to provide the same functionality as the current
Pragma's minimal ConTeXt distributions in the zip files. Etc...

They will be renamed to either distribution or official
distribution and the only supported way of installing context.

This is quite confusing for a newbie: If I install the ConTeXt Minimals,
what will I be missing what's in the Pragma's minimal distribution
 ?

This is absolutely true. Because of this we will remove the part
minimals from the name.

Thanks a lot for your suggestions!

Re: [NTG-context] A ConTeXt bug tracker to keep track of reported bugs?

2008-09-11 Thread Patrick Gundlach
Hi,

I've reported several bugs (mostly Arabic related) and I'm afraid it
might get lost as time goes, I wonder if there is a bug tracker for
ConTeXt where we can track reported bugs? I searched the wiki and I
 didn't find any thing.

There used to be a public bug tracker at foundry.supelec.fr somewhere.
But I have removed the links from the wiki page, since it seems to be
outdated.

There is an internal bug tracker for the developers which Yue Wang
mentioned.

Re: [NTG-context] Apple Emoji (was: Smileys)

2011-08-17 Thread Patrick Gundlach

It is a bitmap format, a sort of quick and dirty hack by Apple to please
certain markets and it shouldn't concern a typesetting system

I think we should leave it up to the users what they think about using a font
like this in typesetting. 640k ought to be enough for anybody…

:)

I'd like to have my typesetting system to be capable of what users demands
and not what I think is good for them.

Re: [NTG-context] xml and lua again

2011-10-28 Thread Patrick Gundlach

 context.blackrule{ width = number.topoints(tex.dimen[textwidth]/2) }

 or just tex.dimen[textwidth]/2 .. sp

Wait, just so I understand: your solution would imply that
tex.dimen[textwidth] holds a number, not a dimension, right? (Because you
simply concatenate it with a dimension unit). Which makes sense when I think
of it because lua has no concept of dimensions, only of strings, functions,
tables, numbers... Whereas the Wolfgang implies that the result is already in
 sp. So who's right?

both :)

tex.dimen holds a number, that is the size in points, multiplied by 65536/1pt,
so for example 3pt becomes

3pt * 65536
--- = 3 * 65536 = 196608
  1pt

This number is also known sp. So if you store the number 3*65536 in
tex.dimen[...], you can say:

my width is \directlua{ tex.dimen[...] / 2}sp (results to my width is
196608sp, which you can use as an argument to whatever needs a length)

or

my width is \directlua{ number_to_points(tex.dimen[...]) } where
number_to_points is something like

number_to_points = function (amount_in_sp)
  in_pt = tostring(amount_in_sp / 65536)
  return in_pt .. pt
end

which gives 3pt.

[NTG-context] Recommended table environment?

Hello,

I have a project where I think ConTeXt really fits well, so I have a first
question (after a looong period of absence). Is there a recommended table
environment? I give an example in the attached PDF. What I need:

* have influence on the column width (2 columns, both same size)
* automatic split with repeating headers
* more than one paragraph (with fill in rules) in a cell possible (but this
simulated by invisible cells)
* some borders (not so sure about that...)

Thanks!

Hi all,

Mojca has found a way to keep archive.contextgarden.net updated, so you can use
it again. Her statement about the future of it is still true.

So: copy of mailing list archive (archive.contextgarden.net) won't be
updated for at least some time, but there is also a chance that it
will be completely replaced by a different solution. Not that it would
be technically impossible to continue updating it, but I think that
setting up mailing lists has a much higher priority at the moment than
old archives (which are much better at gmane.org anyway).

[NTG-context] small new feature on the wiki

2006-07-12 Thread Patrick Gundlach
Hi there,

since there might be some users here who edit pages on the wiki and
who don't read the 'recent changes' page:

you can now say

context source=yes text=produces
\your \TeX \code=here
/context

this will typeset the source with the texcode/texcode
highlighter/formatter, then output the (optional) text 'produces', and
finally renders the already known graphical representation of the
source. This way you only have to enter the code once (less errors).
Special thanks to Jano Kula for this.

Hello Aditya,

[...]

 context source=yes text=produces
 \your \TeX \code=here
 /context

This is great for creating new code as well as editing existing one.
However, is it possible to change the width of the image that is
created. I fine the default A4 paper width to be too large and
 ususally add a
 \setuplayout[width=13cm]
in the context code. Is it possible to do this with the new feature?

If we agree on a common page size, I could easily put it in there. If
we don't agree on one, I could perhaps say context source=...
width=13cm. This would take a few more minutes to implement (I
still have to implement that the source and the results are next to
each other (left/right).)

Hello Peter (and Taco and others),

if I update some description in texshow-web, will it then appear
automatically in the normal texshow of the next ConTeXt-release?

I didn't think of _that_ question. I guess Taco and I have to figure
that out, but I suppose the answer is currently no, but will be yes in
the near future.

Hi,

You should try to contact the author of texshow-web (email address is

Please describe exactly what you were doing and what you did expect

The problem is that I don't read this list on a regular basis, so

Re: [NTG-context] textmate

2006-09-04 Thread Patrick Gundlach
Hi,

TextMate is a delight. I've been using a bastardized LaTeX bundle, which
doesn't do anything useful except some decent highlighting. I'd love to
 see a good one.

I've started one, but it's at the very beginning.

obvious shortcomings:

* no Cmd-R or equivalent for typesetting ConTeXt
* no PDF preview

(next release)

but

* (esc) completion for all ConTeXt commands (that are in texshow*)
* snippets for all Commands, including a visual feedback for optional
and mandatory arguments as well as the argument type (list,
keywords, math, ...). Just type \acommand and press tab.
* Help for all known commands, press Ctrl-h and a texshow-web help
  pops up.

Wiki page (general Text editor page): http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Text_editor
Download: http://dl.contextgarden.net/support/
or directly:
http://dl.contextgarden.net/support/context-tmbundle-0.1.zip

I'd like to get help on the rest.

Enjoy!

Hello Taco

Sorry for that stupid question, but what it the process to add something
to the wiki? I can edit existing page, but in which topic or page one can
add something? Is an account required? Is there a list of the pages added
by the users? The wiki itself doesn't seem to have many information about
 this.

You were looking for this page:

http://wiki.contextgarden.net/How_to_edit_wiki_pages

Patrick, it would make sense to have this in the left menu, yes?

I have changed the 'Help' link in the navigation portlet to point to
the mentioned page. Or would you suggest an alternative? Making an
extra link?

In any case, this page should be completed.

But: perhaps the page

http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Help:Editing

should be used instead as the main help page, because this is the page
that gets linked to when you edit a page (Editing help (opens in new
window)).

Somewhat clueless,

Just for the record: I've found a simple solution, which works OK here

texmfstart texexec --pass=\'-file-line-error -halt-on-error\' hello

this way (internally) the command looks like --pass='.' which will

Re: [NTG-context] TextMate bundle

2007-03-27 Thread Patrick Gundlach
Hello Steffen,

 1) The snipped feature uses the tab key for triggering *further*
 information, right?

right.

(If I remember correctly) I knew a similar feature (was it in AlphaX/Tk?)
where the tab helped me to *complete* the command.
 For example: \cha + tab gave \chapter
or when not clear like: \sub + tab gave a range with all commands
 starting with \sub... to choose.

Enter \sub and press the escape key (several times). Then you can use
the tab key for further information.

In textmate triggering the snipped with tab just works when typed
 the entire \chapter, right?

right.

There is no-one helping me typing when I get lazy?

If you are too lazy to hit the escape key, then yes :)

 2) You assigned F9 to texexec and so on.

(btw: I'll probably change that to cmd-R for the sake of compatibility
to existing textmate standards)

When, for some rare reason, I need to change the texexec a bit (with
additional options or such), where to do so?

find the 'texexec' command in the bundle editor: Bundles -
Bundle-Editor - Edit Commands. (In the ConTeXt bundle of course.)

 3) Probably a similar (stupid) question:
You wrote the variable PDF_VIEWER, the default is 'Preview'. You can try
anything that you can use as an argument for 'open'...
Well, where do I find this in order to have a try?

See http://macromates.com/textmate/manual/environment_variables 9.4
(at the very end). Does this information already help you?

Hi Steffen,

 Ahh! The escape-key!!
On my machine (up to now) this was already assigned to enter
 snippet for Butler (by petermaurer.de).

You can easily change the key to something else in the bundle editor.

Well, does it mean that I have to define a project-variable (tmproj) for each
project in order to overwrite the default?
 Inside of ConTeXt.tmbundle I couldn't find a *.tmproj file ...

the mentioning of 'tmproj' is a bit confusing, just ignore it. You
have to set this variable from within TextMate. tmproj is just the
file extension of the project file, there is nothing useful to edit
there. When you create a project 'abc', it will get saved on the drive
as 'abc.tmproj'. It has nothing to do with the bundles.

There are two different places to set this variable:

1) (global) in textmate's preferences/advanced/shell variables and
2) (each project) in a project's preference window. This works only in
a project and you have to follow the instructions on
  the given webpage:

The way to do this is currently a little secret but
if you deselect everything in the project drawer,
then click the info (circled I) button, a panel will
appear where you can set variables.

For both ways, just click on the plus sign in the lower left corner of
the window and enter for example

-
PDF_VIEWER texniscope

Hi Arthur,

(old question, but may be of interest to others)

That's probably the biggest pain with most PDF viewers, not watching
files; at any rate it's what I miss the most now I'm using XeTeX as my
main TeX engine. What other viewers do you know watch files?

on OS X:

texniscope http://www2.ing.unipi.it/~d9615/homepage/texniscope.html
old, but still good, and pdfview http://pdfview.sourceforge.net/.

Hello Helin,

Very cool update. One question tho, for the old version, I was able to
play around with the typeset command to allow typesetting with XeTeX.
In this new version, there's only one line in the typeset command:
typeset_contextfile. Where can I tweak this then?

Oh, sorry. Wait for 0.4 (to be released soon). Until then, you can put
this in the first line of your TeX source:

% engine=xetex

download and install 0.4. Then set the variable 'CTX_ENGINE' to
'xetex'.

See

for instructions. If this doesn't help, please write back.

(the only change in 0.4 is the switch for the xetex engine)

Hello Helin,

Personally, I feel it's probably more flexible to have two distinct
command, one for pdftex, and another for xetex...

You can set this variable on a per project basis. So for project A set
it to xetex, for project B set it to pdftex or unset it. This way you
don't have to remeber wich project used which engine.

Hi Arthur,

Your font is probably only in the texmf tree, it should be
   installed;

Ok, that was the problem.

If you wonder why it works “out of the box” on ConTeXtgarden Live,
well, it must be because someone has installed it (and I should know ;-)

Next ConTeXt meeting I won't go to sleep at all, just in case I could
miss important changes (like switching to xetex at 4:44 a.m) :-))

Merci beaucoup,

Here is one for you. It is just a duplicate of 'typeset' with the
following command:

CTX_ENGINE=xetex typeset_contextfile

Same key equivalent, same scope.
