[NTG-context] documentation: parameters of \setuplist

[Henning Hraban Ramm]

I tried to complete https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Command/setuplist, 
but I don’t understand all parameters.


Can anyone explain these please:

* state (start stop): what does this en-/disable? collecting entries?
* label (yes no none Name): language dependent labels? as a prefix or what?
* location (none, here): disable placement? when makes this sense?
* aligntitle (yes no): align which part to what?
* symbol (one two three none default): where is this used?

Amine,

The thing is, that in the MKIV-publications.pdf (see in the doc subtree of 
texmf-context) \setupcite does not exist. This command is used by the 
implementation by Taco Hoekwater. This system is still in the distro.

In order to get your bibliography working you will have to study the 
MKIV-publicaations document. — I say this, because I started to use it recently 
for one of my projects. And yes it is rather a complex system…

fc-cache -v -f works fine on MacOS aswell as on Linux; try some command like 
this one : fc-list : file family |grep \/Library which list all fonts and their 
location

I thought that all personal fonts should be added in texmf-fonts ? 

By the way, it might be useful to have . setuptex command. How to deal with

On MacOS, I usually follow with success this page of the wiki :

Regarding modules, on MacOS, the script described here (again on the wiki) 
works well for me:

Finally, I use TexPad as my context/metafun editor, and if you need some help

Now my question : I want to try CTX (ConTeXt  ver: 2021.12.30) on MacOS X 
(currently 10.13  High Sierra), while I was formerly working with old versions 
on Linux and Windows based systems. Among other difficulties (like how to 
export OSFONDIR permanently), I don’t find the clever command . setuptex, which 
made possible a bunch of other commands (like context —make and context 
—generate). Even if a lot of things on MacOS X seem to share with Unix-like 
systems, I am looking for detailed documentation concerning a well done 
installation of CTX on MacOS X.

Have a look at the bibliography module’s documentation (mkiv-publications.pdf), 
there’s an example with chemicals. Don’t know if that fits your needs.

Hi,

I want to typeset a Periodic Table of the Elements. The according data
is prepared in a file with comma separated values (csv/UNIX). I found
some *very* basic informations how to get file based csv-data typeset,
but the result is hardly recognizable as Periodic Table of the
Elements.

To understand how to use the according commands I need a documentation
of it.

What I found was this:

which is more a summary of two examples with no explanations and
starting with the warning "This may be outdated".

Where can I find a good one?

Hi,

I often have documents that are not finished but need to change over time.
A client changes their mind, laws are changed, …

While working with the document, I want to see the changes.
When the document is finally finished, I only want to see the change history.

I came up with the following.
When the mode is „change“  the date (or version) is shown in the margin and the 
change is printed in red.
Without mode „change“ only the change history is printed.

What I want now is to change the layout of the register.
Adding some vspace around the date and printing the date in bold.
Is there a way to achieve this or am I on the wrong way?
(Should the date be the indicator, thus giving me the layout I want?)

Where can the current documentation for the letter module be found?
I seems like it's not included in the distribution (why is it
missing?) and

Furthermore, the latest updates on
http://bitbucket.org/wolfs/correspondence/ are from 2012-02-02 and

In the "Manual" and in "Getting started" there is no mention of the new
startchapter command, which is mentioned on the wiki as a replacement of
the old \chapter command.

I know that \chapter is working just fine, but when the new command is
startstopchapter it would be nice to read about it.

order to better learn how to use it, and I face several issues.

1. documentation is scattered. Sources of documentation are the Wiki and
a lot of PDF documents.

2. it is not always possible to decide whether a pdf document is related
to MKII or MKIV. So I start reading only to learn that it is outdated.

3. I had the hope to access all commands via the xml interface mechanism
(showsetup) which could be a kind of auto generated documentation
(using: mtxrun --script server --auto) but it seems that not all
commands are accessible through this mechanism

I would like to propose a documentation sprint at the meeting in
Kalenberg this fall to improve the situation.

much mkii applies to mkiv (but you can forgot about things like 
encodings and such so for fonts best consult the latest)

Documentation is an ongoing project... we discuss this regularly at the
ConTeXt users meetings and make great resolutions about completing and
updating it all. As Hans and Wolfgang point out, quite a lot of
documentation is available on the Pragma website and more and more
documentation is being included in the distribution. There are ongoing
efforts to update older documents and new documents are being written.

We will definitely discuss this some more at the next meeting.

Great to hear that a sprint is planned.

I am not sure what kind of abstract I should send to Alan. If a sprint
is planned we could setup a sprint planning etherpad somewhere an add
items there so that participants can choose an item to work on.

commands come in layers:

- general low level  : you can find a list of them in mult-low.lua (i 
sometimes add to them)


- specific low level : like the one you mention, these are normally 
quite stable (read: you can use them as they will stay around), there 
are quite some \doif* ones (no list, one needs to look into the source 
code re;ated to it) ... i have no time to make a list but if someone ...


- frequently used high level commands with low level fast callers : 
\framed sits in this category


- high level commands : lots of \setup, \define, \start and so ... we 
share the systematics as much as possible (also options)


- then there are defined commands (and users can add to them) : specific 
instances of section heads, verbatim, fonts etc


(some of the more obscure commands are described in articles and 
dedicated manuals)

the document is useful to me.

In a MWE on this list I saw the command \doifoddpage which is not in the
list.

Wiki and even Google does not find anything about this command. I think
that I kind of understand the command, but I wonder how many commands

When mechanisms in context are extended, we try to remain downward 
compatible, at least in functionality. Therefore the old manuals are 
normally okay (no need to fake updates with newer dates.) There are 
however a few core mechanisms that are obsolete and/or changed and those 
are input encodings (now always utf) and fonts (now always unicode - or 
mapped to unicode - using features cf open type and more).


In practice input encodings and fonts have always been complex: what 
input encoding to choose and what font encoding to use, then running 
into availability of fonts, differences per language, differences per 
user. A bit of installation nightmare and user support as soon as it 
became less standard. By the time that had become easier (tex gyre and 
lm project) the move to opentype was made so most of the documentation 
had become somewhat obsolete.


So, when using old manuals, keep in mind that encodings, regimes and 
fonts are less hassle now and no special commands are needed to use and 
combine these properties.


In addition some mechanisms were extended and improved in mkiv 
(sectioning and so) which means that there are additional ways to 
configure them.


That leaves mechanisms that are completely redone. One example is 
bibliographies, but users who need them will have no real problems 
adapting and these come with new manuals.


Stick to mkiv. It's the one where the action takes place.

 Confirmed. The wiki server (wiki.contextgarden.net) does not
 respond to ICMP requests. I remember having used the wiki only
 yesterday so it could be temporary outage. The git server
 (git.contextgarden.net) is still running, though.

Only wiki, live and modules are down (plus tlcontrib). Minimals and
alike still work.

The domain contextgarden.net points to one server, but apache
redirects to another and that second one is down. This might explain
why verification sites show different results.

Only Taco has access to hardware.

  For some reason (isp/dns/something) the contextgarden.net
 has been unavailiable to me since yesterday even though some verification

Confirmed. The wiki server (wiki.contextgarden.net) does not
respond to ICMP requests. I remember having used the wiki only
yesterday so it could be temporary outage. The git server
(git.contextgarden.net) is still running, though.

You will probably need CSS styling.

Maybe you can use one of the popular CSS reset or normalize stylesheets
available. I haven't tested, but http://necolas.github.io/normalize.css/ is
pretty popular.

Beware, a lot of EPUB rendering engines are crap, and there is not a lot of
conformity throughout various products. This seems sad... since it is just
XHTML.

I'm not sure. The impression I have is that the new bibliography code
is still under development, so using anything other than the official
‘old’ interface might break in future versions. Hans can probably give
a more definitive answer on this.

means that the introduction cannot be given a fancy first page similar to
the numbered chapters without giving it to the TOC, etc.

definitely shows some mkiv trickery but as we're mostly upward 
compatible the wiki might be a better place to start

at some point

I have downloaded a great part of the documentation (59 files or so).
But if I understood well, there has been big changes between Mark II and 
Mark IV/Lua.

The documentation seems more linked to MkII.

Is mk.pdf the file to use (in conjonction with another?)?

I like cont-eni.pdf but I'd like to have it as print not to be seen on 
screen (old habit of work - or habit of work of old!!)

I am very much a ConTeXt beginner and so I don't feel capable of reading 
the documentation to find ConTeXt-related errors or omissions.  However, 
I would be glad to help by looking for typos, spelling errors, etc. 
(Actually, I rarely find spelling errors in the documentation but 
sometimes I see phrasing and grammar that isn't wrong, but sounds 
funny to a native English speaker.)

Due to a long commute on the train I find myself with plenty of time for 
reading, so I'd be glad to help in any way I can.  I am sorry that you 
have felt unsupported in your efforts to update the documentation; I am 
one of the users who (silently) wishes for more up to date documents but 
has done nothing to help.
