[NTG-context] streams reversed?

2023-09-13 Thread jbf
I am making some progress with a bilingual text using the streams
mechanism suggested by Wolfgang: https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Columns,
but see below.

The aim has been to have en and vi on facing pages (en left, vi right).

It works correctly for the Foreword in two languages (en, vi) in
frontmatter.

When I come to bodymatter and Chapter 1, again it works, except that the
positions of the languages are reversed, so I end up with vi on the left
and en on the right. By Chapter 2 we are back to the correct position
once more (en left and vi right).

I want to know why this is happening, and if I can prevent it happening.

I am using the code you can see below, except that instead of
\startoutputstream[one] and \startoutputstream[two] etc.  I am using
[en-front][vi-front], and then in bodymatter [en-chap1][vi-chap1] etc.
etc. with the relevant repetitions of these identifiers where needed. I
assume that to get a degree of synchronization I need to use this
approach for each set of chapters. But I cannot understand why the
languages alternate their starting page positions each chapter.

There are other issues I have to solve, but first of all I wish to
resolve this one.

Julian

The original (Wolfgang) code is as follows:

\starttext

\startoutputstream[one]
   \startcolor[red]
   \dorecurse{10}{\input  knuth\par}
   \stopcolor
\stopoutputstream

\startoutputstream[two]
   \startcolor[green]
   \dorecurse{10}{\input  zapf\par}
   \stopcolor
\stopoutputstream

\synchronizestreams[one,two]

\setbox\scratchboxone\outputstreambox[one]
\setbox\scratchboxtwo\outputstreambox[two]

\doloop
 {\ifvoid\scratchboxone
\exitloop
  \else
\setbox\scratchboxfour\vsplit\scratchboxone  to\textheight
\vbox  to\vsize{\box\scratchboxfour\vss}%
\setbox\scratchboxfive\vsplit\scratchboxtwo  to\textheight
\vbox  to\vsize{\box\scratchboxfive\vss}%
  \fi}

\stoptext

[NTG-context] streams not working?

2011-12-28 Thread Pablo Rodríguez
Hi there,

I'm trying to get some poems in a bilingual document using streams.

According to the wiki (http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Columns#Streams),
this example should work:

\usemodule[streams]
\def\StartCouple{\page\SwitchToNormal}
\def\StopCouple{\SwitchToNormal\SynchronizeLeftAndRight\FlushLeftAndRight}
\def\Original{\SwitchToNormal\SynchronizeLeftAndRight\SwitchToLeft}
\def\Translation{\SwitchToRight}
\starttext
\StartCouple
\Original\en
Are you sleeping, brother John?
\Translation\de
Bruder Jakob, schläfst du noch?
\StopCouple
\stottext

But I get this error:

l.19 \defineoutputstream
 [\v!left]
! == Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced!
mtx-context | fatal error: return code: 1
Compilation failed.

The example at http://source.contextgarden.net/m-streams.tex (referenced
by the wiki page) doesn't work for me either. This is all Greek to me.

What am I missing here?

Thanks for your help,

Pablo

You don’t need the module to use streams, read this older message:

Many thanks for your answer, Wolfgang.

As the reply to that message
(http://www.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/2011/063358.html), I wonder how
could I get facing chapters with Greek text with facing pages containing
the Spanish translation.

I'm afraid that the code you provided is too complex for me (I don't
understand a word there).

Many thanks for your help,

[NTG-context] Streams

2011-11-23 Thread Willi Egger
Hi,

I was looking for a possibility to typeset an article left in the original
language and right in the translation.I found then the mail of Thomas, when he
announced the availability of streams (2006). - Great, that is what I am
looking for!

However when issuing \usemodule[streams] I get immediately a fatal error:
undefined controlsequence. I believe is \defineoutputstream.

So it looks like the module is broken. - Is there another approach to get two
texts in different languages next to each other?

Kind regards

Willi

You don’t need the mode for MkIV. Below is a example copied from the source:

Hi Wolfgang,

thank you for your answer!
Aha, mkiv does not need the module.
So I tried first the example en then used my actual document. - It runs through
indeed!

Now there is still the question whether it is possible to place e.g. on the
left page German text and in parallel on the right page Dutch text?

Have a nice evening!

Luigi, Bert, you both completely miss that the OP already tried to
use streams (see subject!) and can't achieve what he needs, i.e.
streams in columns.
That's simply not possible to get automatically (i.e. without
manual breaking) with today's ConTeXt.

[NTG-context] Streams

2008-04-11 Thread Roman Sigg
Hello

For a publication project in phonetics and dialectology I'd like to
print the phonetic transcription and the dialect text in a two column
setup. I would be interested to use context for that (more
flexibility than LaTeX), but every new paragraph is printed on a new
page (as Henning Hraban Ramm posted earlier). Is there a work around
other than using two pages?

Thanks,
Roman

It doesn't seem possible - only if you control page/column breaks
manually.

Hi,

perhaps the streams module can help you? I use it to set texts and
theirs translations on
facing pages. You can find an example below. (It came over this list a while
ago.)

Kind regards

Chris

%%%
\usemodule[streams]

\def\StartCouple{\page\SwitchToNormal}
\def\StopCouple {\SwitchToNormal \SynchronizeLeftAndRight
\FlushLeftAndRight}
\def\Original {\SwitchToNormal\SynchronizeLeftAndRight\SwitchToLeft}
\def\Translation{\SwitchToRight}

%%So you put the part of your document where synchronization should
%%take place between \StartCouple and \StopCouple. After that ,
%%\Original and \Translation switches between even and odd pages.
\starttext

\scale[width=\textwidth,height=\textheight,factor=fit]{\ss m-streams}
\page

\StartCouple

\Original
this is an original text \crlf
\input knuth
%\blank[1cm]

\Translation
THIS IS THE TRANSLATION \crlf
\input tufte

\Original
\ss this is an original text \crlf
\input knuth

\Translation
\ss THIS IS THE TRANSLATION \crlf
\input tufte

\StopCouple

[NTG-context] Streams in two columns

2008-04-05 Thread Henning Hraban Ramm
I'm trying to typeset English and German texts in two columns.
With the following example every bilingual section goes on a new
page. How can I avoid that?
(Using only columns instead of columnsets I get single-section
pages with alternating languages.)

%% setup

\definecolumnset[twocol][n=2]
\setuphead[chapter][page=no, number=no, align=right]

\usemodule[streams]
% example from the streams module
% only enhanced by columnset
\def\StartCouple{\page\startcolumnset[twocol]\SwitchToNormal}
\def\StopCouple {\SwitchToNormal \SynchronizeLeftAndRight
\FlushLeftAndRight\stopcolumnset}
\def\Original   {\SwitchToNormal\SynchronizeLeftAndRight\SwitchToLeft}
\def\Translation{\SwitchToRight}

%% text snippet

\StartCouple
\Original\de
\chapter{Ein säkulares Europa -- der Weg zur europäischen
Staatsbürgerlichkeit}

\Translation\en
\chapter{A Secular Europe -- the Road to European Citizenship}

\Original\de
Zum 50. Jahrestag der Unterzeichnung der Römischen Verträge der
Europäischen Union hat die European Humanist Federation am 25. März
2007 die Brüsseler Erklärung veröffentlicht. Hierin wird nochmals
bekräftigt, dass Europa auf einer Vielzahl von Kulturen und
Traditionen beruht, und seine Bürger der Geschichtsklitterung vom
christlichen Abendland entgegenwirken müssen.

\Translation\en
At the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Rome treaties which
established the European Union the European Humanist Federation
published the Brussels declaration. It affirms once more Europe’s
foundation to consist of many cultures and traditions and reminds its
citizens to work against the biased historical account of the
Christian occident.

[NTG-context] Streams ignore textwidth

2007-08-27 Thread Aditya Mahajan
Hi,

In streams width=whatever only sets the width of the bounding box, the
text still goes until \textwidth. Is this a bug or a feature? A work
around is to use setups:stream:settings, but it is a bit clumsy.

See the differece between the two streams below.

\usemodule[streams]

\definestreamlayer[flash][width=3in]
\definestreamlayer[model][width=3in]

\startsetups streamlayer:flash:settings
\hsize=3in
\stopsetups

\starttext

\startstreamlayer[flash]
\input tufte
\stopstreamlayer

\startstreamlayer[model]
\input tufte
\stopstreamlayer

\framed[sturt=no]{\placestreamlayer[flash]}

\framed[sturt=no]{\placestreamlayer[model]}

\stoptext

i know, but it's needed this way because we intercept the otr and need
to use the same settings several times

i will make a better stream model in mkiv
