First there was a singing BOBWHITE at the Lighthouse, an apparent
local first of the year. Other South Fork first of the year birds

I joined a group from Bedford Audubon today (5/1), led by Tait Johansson, to
some local Westchester spots. Lots of new migrants came through last night -
for me, 17 new species on the year.
79 species total today, including 13 warblers.

I watched a female yellow-bellied sapsucker in the trees of our front yard
in East Marion this morning. This was the first time I have seen this
species on the North Fork. Was this in fact an unusual sighting?

Today I was hoping to better the 55 species seen last week and almost made a

Happily, the overnight influx of summer breeders and north-bound migrants
extended out to Eastern Long Island. Hugh McGuinness and I spent the morning
birding Montauk Point and adjacent Camp Hero SP (Suffolk Co.). We found a
good collection of migrants including Blue-headed, Warbling and
An UPLAND SANDPIPER was at Calvert Vaux Park (Coney Island Creek,
Brooklyn) this morning, perhaps, though not necessarily, the same
bird seen on 4/17. With good movement going on and appropriate

This morning brought Scarlet Tanager and Red-eyed Vireo to my "not very
birdy" yard in Ridge in central Suffolk County, and that was enough to get
me out to a couple of the local spots that have been pretty quiet up till
