Tom Moran and I got a late start today, only to find both Hempstead Lake
State Park and Jones Beach State Park fairly quiet. In spite of this,
Tom saw & heard his target bird, a Warbling Vireo at HLSP. This "lifer" was
a personal milestone...his 300th N. American species.

Vanderwhacker Mountain Trail, & Hewitt Eddy Trail (* first-of-the-season)
I hiked ~9 miles on 4 different trails in western Essex County today. I
found a Black-backed Woodpecker nest location, and as usual, the male was
doing
Northeast winds persist and the warblers were few and far between. I had two
bird walks today, to celebrate the opening of the Native Plant Garden. After
birding NYBG for 6 hours we saw the following birds:
WORM EATING WARBLER
PRAIRIE WARBLER
Yellow warbler
Palm warbler
Yellow rumped warbler
Although many migrants were absent, a nice morning.
Most unusual were three Black Vultures in a small kettle with over the Turtle
Cove area.
Black Vulture
Warbling Vireo
Red-eyed Vireo
Orchard Oriole
Baltimore Oriole
Northern Flicker
American Goldfinch
Tree Swallow
Yellow-rumped Warbler (4)
While walking down Edgemere Park road to the landfill, Alie Ratay, Bob
Washburn and I flushed a likely 1st year CHUCK-WILL'S-WIDOW from the north side
of the road at the open chain-link gates to the bayside parking area. Adding
details here if anyone is interested in finding later today.
This should answer your questions.

An evening seawatch from Amagansett (Suffolk Co.) on Friday evening (3 May

Elizabeth,
I can't answer your questions regarding the merits of the project, but as a
state agency, the DEC has regulatory jurisdiction over all projects requiring a
permit regardless of who's property the activity is occurring on; state,
municipal, or private.
