Hi Everyone,
I took a trip out to Montauk and Orient Point before the snow started. I
didn't let the snowstorm stop me - I managed 21 species Monday - nothing
unusual except a lot of robins - they were the most abundant songbird
during the 2 days. (~120) Of course Tuesday was the better day - I
This afternoon between Calverton & Riverhead I had (6) Red-tailed Hawks,
(1) male N. Harrier, aka The Gray Ghost, 21 Horned Larks, and a Vesper
Sparrow, on Doctor's Path, as it fed along the side of the road.
Cheers,
Bob

As has been previously reported through this listserv and a Canadian blog -
some snowy owls made it onto a freighter that left NY and hugged the coast
near Canada before heading to Europe. At least two of these birds are in
the Netherlands and are being regularly photographed - here is a link to

Hi all,
I looked for Anya's Kumlien/Thayer's gull today around noon, but it was not
to be found. The snow we received yesterday has received the loafing area
for gulls and numbers were down. All the birds present on the reservoir
were hanging around a small patch of open water around the fountain.
Beautiful morning and nice birds on the Main Pond.

This morning a single Greater white-fronted goose was on the mud flats west of

I just did a quick, but pertinent update to my current running feature on
adult Iceland Gull variation, to add a link to a page I posted a year ago.
The first three pictures on that page are of an unusually dark immature

Hello,
As there seems to be some questions on this birds id I posted it to a
website I belong to called whatbird.com. While I am not qualified to make
any kind of call on this Gull the members there enjoy these kinds of
discussions and maybe it will help with the id. The discussion thread
One of the problems I have had with this bird is the uniform instead of two

sleeping photo, although it looks like a bleached looking individual, I would
have a hard time not calling this bird a Thayer's type

Anya,
I agree that this is a good candidate for Thayer's b/c of the strong
crescents on the primary tips, the strong tail band and the overall color.
I would love to be able to see the bill, head shape and size in comparison
to Herring Gull to be sure.
