Monday, 4 May, 2015 - Manhattan parks: Central, Riverside, & a few
adjacent smaller sites.
With migration heating up (pun intended, it reached over 80 F. on the
day in Manhattan) there was great movement Sun. night through Monday,
with many birds found in 2 of the larger Manhattan parks
Not being seen currently but presumed still here. Location is in Riverside Pk,
in the woods (sanctuary) east of the tennis courts ~121st. Riverside Church is
across the street on Riverside Drive.

The consecutive nights of favorable winds this weekend got a lot of birds
moving, and I think it's safe to say that the migration pinata has finally
cracked over Long Island. I started at Jones Beach West End early this
morning, and spent a few hours working the median and shoreline. Gannets,
A noticeable improvement over Friday, but still quite slow overall.
The best birding was not at the water hole, but farther west at "the kettle"
and farther southwest toward the railroad tracks.

The idea of venturing out on the ocean in winter is a daunting prospect for
many birders, but this can be one
A 2 hour effort this morning tallied 13 warbler species at Valley Stream
State Park, highlighted by a singing Hooded, singing a quite recognizable
version of its vocal delivery. Other newly arrived species include BT Blue
at VSSP and Lesser Yellowlegs on the flats down at A.J. Hendrickson Park.
I took a short ride “around the block” on Sunday morning, sticking fairly local
to my house just to see what was going on bird-wise.
A trip down Salt Rd in Constantia found the following new arrivals (at least
for me):
4 NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH
1 OVENBIRD
1 BLUE-HEADED VIREO
7 LEAST FLYCATCHERS
1
Nice variety of warblers so far this morning at Hempstead: Prairie, Magnolia,
Black Throated Green, two Northern Waterthrushes the usual suspects, and still
counting. Looks like some nice birding here this morning
