[nysbirds-l] Tifft NP, Buffalo 4/14/15

2015-04-14 Thread joetf1973
A walk through Tifft Nature Preserve this evening provided a nice view of an
American Bittern (Sarah Morris mentioned the bittern as she and her class from
Canisius were leaving Tifft - thanks for the heads up). The bird perhaps 15
yards from Heritage Boardwalk, that is until quarreling geese caused it to move
75 yards out into the marsh. The class also had a Yellow-rumped Warbler (I did
not).

Passerines included a Northern Mockingbird, a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, and nice
selection of sparrows, with at least: 1 Eastern Towhee, 1 American Tree
Sparrow, 2 Chipping Sparrows, 11 Song Sparrows, 2 Swamp Sparrows and 12
Dark-eyed Juncos.

A variety of waterfowl were present, including 4 beautiful Double-crested
Cormorants.

The complete list can be viewed on eBird:

[nysbirds-l] Long Island Ravens

2015-04-14 Thread David La Magna
This past weekend I had a Common Raven flew over my house in Ronkonkoma
(this is not the first time I've had that) and today Mike Rath and I had
another at Fuchs Pond in Northport.

It appears this bird is becoming very well established on Long Island
(especially with some known nest sites in recent years). Ebird reports
show a number of sightings in the past 5 years (2015-2010) but basically
zero in the 5 years prior to that (2010-2005). I am sure the popularity of
eBird in recent years has contributed to that.

On a different note: Massachusetts had 4 swallow-tailed kites yesterday at
Pilgrim Heights Hawk Watch. So keep looking up New York.

[nysbirds-l] Swmp & Fox Sparrows/Hermit Thrush/Ruby-crowned Kinglet/N. Flicker

2015-04-14 Thread Joan Collins
4/14/15 Long Lake (Hamilton Co.)

A strong weather front came through overnight. First-of-the-season species
today:

*Northern Flicker - Sabattis Circle Road

*Hermit Thrush - calling at dawn outside our home - it went through 3 of its
different call notes.

*Ruby-crowned Kinglet - singing along Sabattis Circle Road

*Fox Sparrow - one singing outside our home, and another observed foraging
and calling along Sabattis Circle Road

*Swamp Sparrow - singing at the inlet of Little Tupper Lake

Song Sparrow and Dark-eyed Junco numbers have swelled. There were more
Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers drumming and calling today. The flock of 3 female
Wild Turkeys (down from 11 over the winter) now have a male following them
around in full display outside our house. Many animals battle for the
cracked corn we put out - a Deer actually chased Amer. Crows around the
backyard this morning - very comical! The Deer were afraid of the Wild
Turkeys and waited for them to finish eating before coming in.

Last year, I recorded a Dark-eyed Junco that sang a "Red Crossbill" sounding
song all season at Sabattis Circle Road. On 4/10 this year, I already
posted the Dark-eyed Junco singing a "Song Sparrow" sounding song at
Sabattis Bog. For the past couple days at our house, we've had a Dark-eyed
Junco at the top of the same tree singing an unusual song - it sounds like
one of their typical call notes, but this birds sings it over and over all
day! I recorded it.

Last year, I recorded a Dark-eyed Junco that sang a Red Crossbill sounding
song all season at Sabattis Circle Road. On 4/10 this year, I already
posted the Dark-eyed Junco singing a Song Sparrow sounding song at
Sabattis Bog. For the past couple days at our house, we've had a Dark-eyed
Junco at the top of the same tree singing an unusual song - it sounds like
one of their typical call notes, but this birds sings it over and over all
day! I recorded it.
