[nysbirds-l] South Shore Long Island - Offshore (Coimbra Wreck Area) Report - 8/21

Went offshore yesterday, had high numbers of Wilson's Storm Petrels with some larger flocks. A conservative total count would be in the 200s. Birds were concentrated in areas of bait fish slicks. Also had a single Jaeger Sp. in the distance cruise by a dragger. Noticeably absent were shearwaters

I may have caught something in the way of a Black Tern movement at Jones Beach today. From 12:20 to 1:00, I observed 6 individuals (1 or 2 at a time) moving westward through the channel, heading toward Jones Inlet. The observation point was where the Brown Pelican was first being seen two weeks

Hit some of the usual spots. 20 shorebird species with the best being the American Avocet at Mecox at dawn and 9 Marbled Godwits, a Stilt Sandpiper and a Whimbrel at Cupsogue. Sammy’s Beach in East Hampton has also had up to 5 Whimbrels this week. Sent from my iPhone -- NYSbirds-L List

The American Avocet found by Myles Stokowski a few days ago was still present on the southwest bank at Mecox inlet in Southampton at 4:15. It’s in with a group of mainly Greater black backed gulls, looking skinny. Many people were skampering about the shore of the pond 50 feet from the bird
