[nysbirds-l] South Shore Long Island - Offshore (Coimbra Wreck Area) Report - 8/21

2019-08-22 Thread Long Island Birding .
Went offshore yesterday, had high numbers of Wilson's Storm Petrels with
some larger flocks. A conservative total count would be in the 200s. Birds
were concentrated in areas of bait fish slicks. Also had a single Jaeger
Sp. in the distance cruise by a dragger. Noticeably absent were shearwaters
in the area, with only a few Cory's seen. The weather might of had
something to do with it, as things got nautical with storms and swells
passing through. I am thinking the shearwaters went further offshore to
avoid the storm system, although I did notice two shearwater sp. about 2
miles from the beach coming in, but definitely not big numbers. Some small
striped dolphin pods and humpbacks were also in the area of the Coimbra.
Tuna were breaking the surface, seemingly made up of mostly false albacore
and smaller blue-fin.

[nysbirds-l] Black Terns at Jones Beach

2019-08-22 Thread Steve Walter
I may have caught something in the way of a Black Tern movement at Jones
Beach today. From 12:20 to 1:00, I observed 6 individuals (1 or 2 at a time)
moving westward through the channel, heading toward Jones Inlet. The
observation point was where the Brown Pelican was first being seen two weeks
ago, although the terns were much closer in (a couple even photographed).
Also, one Royal Tern flew by. I did not see a Brown Booby. I say that
because some scuttlebutt came out about one having been in the back bays for
weeks. That's all I'll say for now, as I'm only hearing it third hand
(fourth hand?).

[nysbirds-l] Mecox American Avocet -yes

2019-08-22 Thread Christopher Gangemi
The American Avocet found by Myles Stokowski a few days ago was still present
on the southwest bank at Mecox inlet in Southampton at 4:15.

It’s in with a group of mainly Greater black backed gulls, looking skinny.

Many people were skampering about the shore of the pond 50 feet from the bird
and, with nice weekend weather forecast, many more are incoming.

Wonder how long it will hang out?

I’ll check back early tomorrow morning.
