[nysbirds-l] To hear, and then to see!
Today, after having a hearing aid repaired at the VA Hospital in Northport, L.I., I visited nearby Sunken Meadow S.Pk. in pursuit of the Yellow- rumped (Audubon's) Warbler, that had been seen, off & on, this past season. This was my 3rd try, so I guess I have figuratively "struck-out" with this individual I did get a "hit" though, when I found 9 Common Mergansers in the water w/o the car bridge. What made this a bit special for me was missing this specie this past fall and winter, only to get it as a FOY bird...in the spring! This is the New York Rare Bird Alert for Friday, March 9th 2012 at 7pm. The highlights of today's tape are an extralimital GRAY-CROWNED ROSY-FINCH, RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, EURASIAN WIGEON, KING EIDER, HARLEQUIN DUCK, GLAUCOUS GULL, ICELAND GULL and NORTHERN SHRIKE. Before we begin locally hopefully everyone is aware of the GRAY-CROWNED ROSY-FINCH that had this week been visiting feeders in northern New York in the town of Locust Grove. However this finch has unfortunately apparently moved on. The RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD remains around the feeders adjacent to the entrance to the planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History on West 81st Street just west of Central Park West. The NORTHERN SHRIKE at Floyd Bennett Field has seemingly been more visible recently often perching in trees along the runway that runs north parallel to Jamaica Bay past the entrance to the large parking lot by the boat launch. Look especially around the intersection with the next main runway to the north towards the model airplane flying area. Three RED-NECKED GREBES were with other waterfowl in the bay off the boat launch area last Sunday. At Jones Beach West End 5 HARLEQUIN DUCKS were around the jetty Tuesday and other birds included RED-NECKED GREBE, RAZORBILL and TREE SWALLOW. Last Sunday afternoon there were 2 GLAUCOUS GULLS in the parking lot at the Point Lookout Town Park including an impressive full adult. A female KING EIDER was still on Long Island Sound off Glen Cove last Saturday near the point at East Island. At Hempstead Lake State Park a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was noted again Thursday near MacDonald's Pond beyond the south parking lot and some RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were also in that area recently. A EURASIAN WIGEON was spotted Thursday at Massapequa Preserve in the reservoir just north of the railroad station on the north side of Sunrise Highway Route 27. On the docks at the Bellport Bay Yacht Club at the end of Bellport Lane in Bellport last Saturday afternoon were single GLAUCOUS and ICELAND GULLS and another ICELAND GULL was on Iron Pier Beach at the end of Pier Avenue in Northville last Sunday. An arriving OSPREY was noted Thursday and AMERICAN WOODCOCK have been displaying in numerous areas on the warmer evenings recently. [nysbirds-l] New York Birders Facebook Page
For those who haven't stumbled across it yet some of us have set up a page on Facebook called "New York Birders." The (still evolving) point of it is: This is a group for New York birds, birders, and birding. Share your sightings, photos, birding stories, and blog posts. Hopefully this group will help build the New York birding community - far too often we run into each other in the field and fail to introduce ourselves. Maybe if we see each others faces on Facebook we will be more willing to stop and compare notes! Anyone interested in joining the page is welcome! It can be found here: http://www.facebook.com/groups/NYBirders One really nice aspect of a birding group on Facebook is how much easier it is to share pictures and have discussions that those who are not interested can tune out. Fwd: [nysbirds-l] Rosy Finch?
Today seems to be the first day that the Rosy Finch missed its 6:30 AM feeding routine. Mike Scheibel and I were on site at 6:10 AM and watched the feeders until 8:00 AM. The action peaked at 7:30 AM with large numbers of American Goldfinch. In the mix were American Tree Sparrow, Pine Siskin, Purple Finch and others. The Sugar River Northern Shrike also continued. After I left, I phoned Bobby Kurtz around 9:00 AM who was also on site but reported NO Rosy. Given Arie's Thursday report and today's results I'd say it's not looking good for a weekend showing. Best of luck to anyone that follows up and thanks again to Nancy Loomis for her kind hospitality.
