[nysbirds-l] Post-storm birding Brooklyn inc. probable tropicbird

2012-10-30 Thread Shane Blodgett
I spent most of the day scoping Gravesend Bay from 3 different vantage points.
Highlights included:

1 Tropicbird sp.
1 Cory's Shearwater
2 Wilson's Storm Petrel
3 Leach's Storm Petrel
1 Red Phalarope
6 Parasitic Jaeger
2 Royal Tern

Full list here:

http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S11905104

At around 10:00 a.m. I spotted a brilliant white bird about half the size of
the adult Gannets it was among just south of the mid-span of the Verrazanno.
Unfortunately we were at the end of Bay Parkway at that point putting us a good
1.5 miles away but I was able to follow the bird for about 2 minutes in which
time I was not able to discern any dark markings either above or below on the
bird and no black wingtips (in case it was a runt Gannet).

The shape struck me right away as tropic-bird-like with an attenuated rear
though I could not make out tail streamers at that distance. The bird
hover/kited into the wind and then dove toward the water and then swooping back
up to hover again. It was facing into the wind when hovering and only
flapped intermittently. It repeated this 3x cutting across east across the bay
toward the Belt Parkway. On the third swoop down I lost it and was not able to
relocate. Another band of rain moved in right at that point and viewing
conditions quickly deteriorated.

Given the size of the bird and the very white plumage I would think Red-billed
might actually be more likely than White-tailed but honestly given the distant
I was going mostly on GIS and the distinctive bright white plumage. Those who
know me know that I tend to second guess myself a lot and the fact that only
Rob Jett and I actually ever got on the bird and then we were not able to find
it again gives me pause and I can't say I am 100% ceratain about the i.d. but
wanted to put it out there anyway.

Regards,
Shane Blodgett

[nysbirds-l] Hudson River Storm Birds

2012-10-30 Thread Peter Post

As many as 15 or more birders spent part or most of the day on the
Upper West Side of Manhattan (the 70's) on the Hudson River. Since no
one else has posted the results to this list I thought I would list
the highlights.

American Oystercatcher. 1 flying down river. A first (?) for NY County.
A number of Forster's Terns.
A group of 3 unidentified Jaegers (spotted by Andrew Farnsworth)
believed to be a Pomarine and 2 Parasitics.
Not seen by me: A Herring Gull capturing a Leach's Petrel and flying
off with it.

[nysbirds-l] Verrazano Narrows

2012-10-30 Thread Paul R Sweet
John Ascher and I checked out the Verrazano Narrows from the Brooklyn side. The
best bird was a single Royal Tern seen from the Bay Parkway Mall. 30 plus
Gannets were in the Narrows, some ranging north of the bridge. Good numbers of
Laughing Gulls plus a few Boneparte's Gulls and Common Terns were seen among
the more usual larids.

[nysbirds-l] Hudson River Birds/ Orange County

2012-10-30 Thread Curt McDermott

Today from 9am to 2pm, I was able to get out and bird the Hudson River between
Newburgh and Cornwall in Orange County. All the normal stuff until about
12:30. After 12:30, I had the following:

4 - Common Loon in a group
10- Surf Scoter
1- Shearwater Species ( too far out to ID/rain) Painful!!!
2- Peregrine Falcon ( 1 appeared to be eating on the wing-something I did not
think was possible for them.)
1- Immature Bald Eagle
Several Flocks of Brant flying

All birds seen from Cornwall. Also 1 Brant next to Torches Restaurant in
Newburgh, first seen yesterday.

[nysbirds-l] Wilson's Petrel location

2012-10-30 Thread Jim Clinton
Sorry for not having more information on the location. I was in the field
viewing the bird and had my wife make the post.

River Rd. is just south of Port Ewen which is south of Kingston.
Viewed the Wilson's Petrel from 12:00-12:50. Spent only about 15 minutes in
the air. Most of the time it was sitting on the water. If it stayed on the
water I am sure I would have never spotted it. It look like a small log with a
pointy end upriver. When sitting on the water one could see the light markings
on the wing, the bill and occasionally the rump.

[nysbirds-l] Central Suffolk Co, LI Post-Sandy Birding

2012-10-30 Thread Michael McBrien
Spent most of the early morning in a futile attempt to find a spot to
look over the bay. Most roads were either heavily flooded or had
downed trees blocking them.
A search of the large Patchogue lakes yielded nothing much in the way
of storm birds.
We finally found a vantage point to scope Bellport Bay. In an hour of
scoping, from 10:30 - 11:30am, I recorded 1 Leach's Storm Petrel, 1
Northern Gannet, 2 distant shearwater sp, and many scoters moving
around.
Hopefully more to come later.
Good and safe storm birding,

[nysbirds-l] Storm birds Greene County = NONE

2012-10-30 Thread Richard Guthrie
Between clean-up chores around the house and neighborhood, I watched for any
storm driven birds out over the Hudson River.

Bottom Line - None

Here along the Hudson River, we did have some minor flooding (unless it was
your basement that took on water or road flooded). There had been some
evacuations locally. But the situation is now calm.

I'll be keeping an eye out through the day and report any or no sightings.

[nysbirds-l] Red Phalarope at Spuyten Duyvil

2012-10-30 Thread Joseph DiCostanzo
About 9 am I had a Red Phalarope land in the ship canal visible from my
apartment window at West 218th Street next to Inwood Hill Park in northern
Manhattan. The bird drifted westward towards Spuyten Duyvil and the Hudson
River. We tried to bird the Hudson from the west end of Dyckmann Street, but
police closed off the area.

[nysbirds-l] Fwd: [cayugabirds-l] Leach's storm petrel

2012-10-30 Thread Christopher T. Tessaglia-Hymes
This could end up being a duplicate post, but wanted to get the word out for
another good Upstate bird:

Brad Walker has spotted a Leach's Storm-Petrel out from Myers Point Town Park
on the Eastern shore of Cayuga Lake. This is located in the Town of Lansing,
NY, about 20 minutes North of Ithaca, NY.

Good birding!

Good and safe storm birding,
Michael McBrien

[nysbirds-l] Hudson River Birds/ Orange County

2012-10-30 Thread Curt McDermott

Today from 9am to 2pm, I was able to get out and bird the Hudson River between
Newburgh and Cornwall in Orange County. All the normal stuff until about
12:30. After 12:30, I had the following:

4 - Common Loon in a group
10- Surf Scoter
1- Shearwater Species ( too far out to ID/rain) Painful!!!
2- Peregrine Falcon ( 1 appeared to be eating on the wing-something I did not
think was possible for them.)
1- Immature Bald Eagle
Several Flocks of Brant flying

All birds seen from Cornwall. Also 1 Brant next to Torches Restaurant in
Newburgh, first seen yesterday.

Summary of birds seen during the day:

3 pomarine jaeger

Minimum of 11 parasitic jaegers. 11 were seen at once. Many more were seen but
some were reluctant to fly under the bridge and were circling. Not sure how
many did fly under.
