[nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeon @ Massapequa Preserve

2012-11-12 Thread redknot
The Eurasian Wigeon first reported by Ken & Sue Fuestel continues on the first
pond north of Clark Blvd in the Massapequa Preserve. It was situated in the
northeastern corner of the pond along with a small group of dabbling ducks
including Gadwall, American Wigeon, Green-winged Teal, and a pair of Shovelers.

[nysbirds-l] Barnacle Goose Inwood HIll Park

2012-11-12 Thread Peter Post

When Ardith Bondi and I arrived at the baseball fields shortly after
2:00 PM the ball players were deliberately chasing the geese off of
the baseball fields. The geese flew to the cove just NNE of the
baseball fields where we located the Barnacle Goose. It was
associating with Canada Geese, standing on the mud or swimming. It
provided great views and photo opportunities. Towards dusk most of
the geese flew off towards the Hudson River (to roost?). One of the
Canada Geese had with a neck collar which may provide a clue as to
the provenance of the Barnacle.

Thanks to Anders for posting!

RE: [nysbirds-l] Virginia's Warbler Locations

2012-11-12 Thread Steve Walter
I updated the map at
http://www.stevewalternature.com/downloads/Alley_Map.jpg . The '12'
representing Nov. 12 shows locations where the Virginia's was seen both
yesterday and today. The '11' is about where John Gluth saw it yesterday.
This was along one of the crossovers through the gully, represented by the
dashed lines I've added. The solid lines indicate paved paths around the
gully (and also from the 76th Ave parking lot). My recommendation these days
is to enter from 73rd Ave, which puts you at a location where it's been seen
twice. From there, you can see if birders are concentrating on the north
paved path, or you can continue along the "Brooklyn-Queens Greenway". A
decent strategy is to find a place with good visibility, such as the
overlook I mentioned earlier. Pay attention for other birds such as
kinglets, chickadees, or titmice. The Virginia's may not be travelling with
them, but it has a habit of showing up with other birds (cause that's where
the food is?). And it remains to be seen how the Orange-crowned Warbler
factors into this.

I finally got a presentable picture today - and it's presented on my main
page http://www.stevewalternature.com/ . The Orange-crowned is on the recent
work page, along with some other recent migrants through Alley. The American
Pipit was part of a surprising fallout on Friday. Two were on the baseball
field just west of the Virginia's. At least 21 where in the field across
from Oakland Lake. Other pictures were gathered up in a response to
participate in a blog of local nature and photographers

The Virginia's Warbler was seen twice between 11:30 and 12:30 at the
location where it was seen at 1:45 yesterday. This is on the trail on the
south side of the gully, at a high point with good visibility into the
gully. There is a new twist - an Orange-crowned Warbler - that may throw
birders off. At one point, I watched the Virginia's chase the
Orange-crowned, but the two warblers may form an association. I last saw
both fly toward the south side of the south trail - a development that may
unfortunately expand what appeared to be a narrowing search scope.

I updated the map http://www.stevewalternature.com/downloads/Alley_Map.jpg
to show the approximate locations of the Virginia's Warbler sightings so
far. I also gathered up the previous site info below. On the map, X marks
the spot of its discovery Oct 31. The other spots are noted by the November
dates of the sightings. To access today's location, there is an entrance to
the park from the street at 73rd Avenue and Cloverdale Blvd. (which would be
227th St., but doesn't say either on this map). The bird ranged a bit with
sightings about even with 228 to 229 Streets, both from the trail on the
north side and the trail on the south side (noted on the map as
Brooklyn-Queens Greenway). As I've said before, this is a tough bird to
find. People had been searching for about six hours today before it was
found. The sightings then tend to be brief, with the bird typically
descending into brush. So if that's not bad enough, its expanding range
makes it an even greater challenge.

November 9

This is an area not far from the challenge course. I first heard a soft
chip note on the trail heading north towards the shipping containers and
then found the bird. Note, the trail I am referring to has a weather
station apparatus attached to a tree.

November 5

Enter the park at 76th Avenue and Cloverdale Blvd., this time going left.
Wind around the stone wall on the left to a spot just past a stack of
smaller tree limbs. Of course, by tomorrow it could be somewhere else. It's
worth a look in the plantings along Cloverdale Blvd. (where you enter the
park), as they did attract a Parula later on.

October 31

Alley (Pond) Park is in northeastern Queens (NYC). It lies between the Cross
Island Parkway, Grand Central Parkway, Clearview Expressway, and Long Island
Expressway, if you plan a route here. Whichever highway you take, you'll
want to get to Springfield Blvd.

The specific location is in the southwestern part of the park. The closest
street access is off Cloverdale Blvd., near 77th Avenue. Some might recall
the Yellow-throated Warbler this spring at Cloverdale and 76th Avenue (which
could be seen from the street). For this bird, you'll have to enter the
park. There is an unofficial dirt trail near 77th. There is another
unofficial dirt trail on the far side

[nysbirds-l] East End Birds, Suffolk

2012-11-12 Thread Derek Rogers
Spent a bit more time on the East End this morning with nothing new to report
other than some updates.

I first stopped along Further Lane to locate Angus' reported Cackling Goose.
The flock was reduced since yesterday with fewer Canada's, zero Greater
White-fronted Geese and no Cackling, at least not that I noticed.

After scoping the pasture south of Deep Hollow I did pick up the previously
reported Cackling Goose while Anthony Collerton simultaneously refound the
suspect Dusky Goose. We also both picked up on a flyover Red Crossbill that
rattled off some call notes.

The 2 NORTHERN LAPWINGS continued as of about 3:00 PM in the north end of Deep
Hollow. They were actively plucking earthworms out of the ground. I managed
some fun iScope videos of the feeding and can be viewed on my Flickr site, link
pasted below.

On another note, John Sepenoski, who's been on a role lately, has reported a
BARNACLE GOOSE along with a Cackling on Maratooka Lake in Mattituck. When and
where will a Pink-footed show up?

Best,

RE: [nysbirds-l] Virginia's Warbler Locations

2012-11-12 Thread Robert Lewis
I was one of the birders who saw the bird at this spot (email below) around
12:30.  It was my second attempt in two days.
For those new to this park, this is along a trail that loops around a glacial
"kettle".  If you zoom in to the area on Google maps, the trail is called
"Brooklyn Queens Greenway".  This particular overlook is about where the word
"way" is.  There are two brown iron posts on either side of the trail.  Our
view was to the northeast.
There is a marvelous abundance of easy free parking near here.  Today I parked
on 73rd near the intersection with the road also called "Brooklyn Queens
Greenway".  Yesterday I found lots of easy parking near the east end of 76th.

[nysbirds-l] Barnacle Goose at Inwood Hill Park, Manhattan, NYC

2012-11-12 Thread Joseph DiCostanzo
The previously reported Barnacle Goose was still on the baseball fields at
Inwood Hill Park at 1:30 pm with a large flock of feeding Canada Geese. The
bird, however, was not associating much with the Canadas. While Ann and I
watched, a small child walked across the field followed by her parents with
a stroller. Neither the Barnacle, nor the Canadas seemed particularly
disturbed.

The easiest public transportation is the A train to the last stop at 207th
Street. If you exit at the north end of the station you will be at Broadway
and Isham Street. Walk west two blocks to the park. The ball fields are
across Seamen Avenue from there, just north of Isham.

[nysbirds-l] 11/11/12: NYC/Long Island Birds

2012-11-12 Thread John Askildsen
kirsten and I joined Tom Burke and Gail Benson yesterday in search of the
rarities on the island. we were not disappointed.

We stopped first at Alley Pond Park for the Virginia's Warbler and by sheer
luck, the bird popped up after an hour's search. We then headed out east to
Montauk.

with assistance from Andrew Baksh and Seth Ausabel, we managed to find the
Northern Lapwings, Bewer's Blackbird, a nice flock of 18 or so White-winged
Crossbills, all in locations previously reported and decsribed on this list. we
also managed to find the Cackling Goose and "Dusky" Canada, both on the filed
of Deep Hollow on the south side of Montauk Hwy in the large canada flock.

A reported Myiarchus flycatcher could not be relocated, Evening Grosbeak and
Red Crossbill were seen around Montauk by other birders yesterday.

on the back home, we received word of five White-fronted Geese on Further Lane
in East Hampton. We made a quck stop and found the birds among a large flock of
Canadas on the front lawn of someone's weekend 'cottage' .

Finally, while travelling up Suffolk County Route 111 towards the LIE, a
Short-eared Owl crossed the road in front of our vehicle.

Needless to say, we were not disappointed with the day.

for those who are wondering, gas supplies on the east end are fine and there
are no lines or rationing it seems. As far as we could see, the Meadowbrook
Parkway south of Merrick Road, and therefore Jones Beach SP, are still closed.

RE: [nysbirds-l] Virginia's Warbler Locations

2012-11-12 Thread Robert Lewis
I was one of the birders who saw the bird at this spot (email below) around
12:30.  It was my second attempt in two days.
For those new to this park, this is along a trail that loops around a glacial
kettle.  If you zoom in to the area on Google maps, the trail is called
Brooklyn Queens Greenway.  This particular overlook is about where the word
way is.  There are two brown iron posts on either side of the trail.  Our
view was to the northeast.
There is a marvelous abundance of easy free parking near here.  Today I parked
on 73rd near the intersection with the road also called Brooklyn Queens
Greenway.  Yesterday I found lots of easy parking near the east end of 76th.

The Virginia’s Warbler was seen twice between 11:30 and 12:30 at the location
where it was seen at 1:45 yesterday. This is on the trail on the south side of
the gully, at a high point with good visibility into the gully. There is a new
twist – an Orange-crowned Warbler – that may throw birders off. At one point, I
watched the Virginia’s chase the Orange-crowned, but the two warblers may form
an association. I last saw both fly toward the south side of the south trail –
a development that may unfortunately expand what appeared to be a narrowing
search scope.   Steve Walter   From: bounce-71330061-8873...@list.cornell.edu

Subject: [nysbirds-l] Virginia's Warbler Locations  I updated the map
http://www.stevewalternature.com/downloads/Alley_Map.jpg  to show the
approximate locations of the Virginia’s Warbler sightings so far. I also
gathered up the previous site info below. On the map, X marks the spot of its
discovery Oct 31. The other spots are noted by the November dates of the
sightings. To access today’s location, there is an entrance to the park from
the street at 73rd Avenue and Cloverdale Blvd. (which would be 227th St., but
doesn’t say either on this map). The bird ranged a bit with sightings about
even with 228 to 229 Streets, both from the trail on the north side and the
trail on the south side (noted on the map as Brooklyn-Queens Greenway). As I’ve
said before, this is a tough bird to find. People had been searching for about
six hours today before it was found. The sightings then tend to be brief, with
the bird typically descending into brush. So if
that’s not bad enough, its expanding range makes it an even greater challenge.
November 9This is an area not far from the challenge course.  I first heard
a soft chip note on the trail heading north towards the shipping containers and
then found the bird.  Note, the trail I am referring to has a weather station
apparatus attached to a tree.  November 5Enter the park at 76th Avenue and
Cloverdale Blvd., this time going left. Wind around the stone wall on the left
to a spot just past a stack of smaller tree limbs. Of course, by tomorrow it
could be somewhere else. It’s worth a look in the plantings along Cloverdale
Blvd. (where you enter the park), as they did attract a Parula later on.
October 31Alley (Pond) Park is in northeastern Queens (NYC). It lies between
the Cross Island Parkway, Grand Central Parkway, Clearview Expressway, and Long
Island Expressway, if you plan a route here. Whichever highway you take, you’ll
want to get to
Springfield Blvd.  The specific location is in the southwestern part of the
park. The closest street access is off Cloverdale Blvd., near 77th Avenue. Some
might recall the Yellow-throated Warbler this spring at Cloverdale and 76th
Avenue (which could be seen from the street). For this bird, you’ll have to
enter the park. There is an unofficial  dirt trail near 77th. There is another
unofficial dirt trail on the far side of a paved trail that roughly parallels
Cloverdale. It is from various points on the interior dirt trail that Eric saw
the bird. There is a deep gully here. Acadian Flycatchers nested at the south
end of this gully in 2000. Eric was seeing the Virginia’s more toward the north
end of the gully.   Steve WalterBayside, NY  --NYSbirds-L List Info:Welcome and

RE: [nysbirds-l] Virginia's Warbler Locations

2012-11-12 Thread Steve Walter
I updated the map at
http://www.stevewalternature.com/downloads/Alley_Map.jpg . The '12'
representing Nov. 12 shows locations where the Virginia's was seen both
yesterday and today. The '11' is about where John Gluth saw it yesterday.
This was along one of the crossovers through the gully, represented by the
dashed lines I've added. The solid lines indicate paved paths around the
gully (and also from the 76th Ave parking lot). My recommendation these days
is to enter from 73rd Ave, which puts you at a location where it's been seen
twice. From there, you can see if birders are concentrating on the north
paved path, or you can continue along the Brooklyn-Queens Greenway. A
decent strategy is to find a place with good visibility, such as the
overlook I mentioned earlier.

Subject: [nysbirds-l] Virginia's Warbler Locations

There is another
unofficial dirt trail on the far side of
