[nysbirds-l] 11/18 - 3 Eurasian Wigeons at Mill Pond, Sayville (Suffolk)

2012-11-19 Thread Michael McBrien

Apologies for this belated report.

Yesterday afternoon (11/18), while searching the central Suffolk ponds
for migrant waterfowl, I came across 3 Eurasian Wigeons on Mill Pond
in Sayville. Two were adult males, both near full breeding plumage.

The third individual was quite interesting and very distinct.
Overall, it resembled a female Eurasian, It possessed a darker,
warmer brown head in comparison with nearby Americans and gray
underwing coverts/auxillaries were noted a few times. It clearly
lacked any black gape line. However, newly molted-in gray scaps could
point toward a 1st cycle male.

No other rare waterfowl were noted during checks of the other large
lakes nearby. Numbers were quite impressive on nearby Patchogue Lake
though. I tallied 208 Am. Coot, 273 Ring-necked Ducks, and 870 Ruddy
Ducks. Three Redheads were also noted at this location.

Good birding,
   Michael McBrien
   East Patchogue

[nysbirds-l] Virginia's Warbler (YES) @ Alley Pond Park Queens County...

2012-11-19 Thread Andrew Baksh
Eric Miller just reported that the Virginia's Warbler continues at
Alley Pond Park in Queens.

Seen at 2:15 p.m. on the north side of the kettle hole, that is
closest to 73rd Avenue. The area is within ear shot of a new home
construction.

The bird was seen foraging and heard chipping. Many thanks to Eric for
getting this recent sighting out in a timely manner as this is quite a
difficult bird to track and any new intel will help those who still
have not seen it.

Good Birding!

[nysbirds-l] 11/19: Selasphorus Hummer continues -Central Pk

2012-11-19 Thread Karen Fung
Still present in the Conservatory Garden @10:15am. Seen feeding on
salvia and sunflower blossoms in the NW corner of the North Garden (
the garden with the circular flower bed and dancing maidens sculpture
in the center). Enter the park at 5th ave & 106th; the garden is to
your left. The general consensus is that this is a Rufous hummer
(female or immature), from those who got a good look at the tail
spread.

Thanks to Nadir Souirgi who first reported the bird on Oct 31st; I
believe it's been seen every day since then ( tho not reported to the
state list).

[nysbirds-l] White-winged Crossbills, Hampton Bays

2012-11-19 Thread Peter Priolo
Inspired by the recent post about the sightings at the IGA pines in Montauk, I
searched for a resembling landscape along Dune Road. Similar to the pine trees
of the parking lot of IGA, there is just a small patch of Pitch or Black Pines
on both the east and west side of the Ponguogue bridge where it meets the
barrier island. No maritime forest exists on this area of the barrier island so
these pines seem to be a small "island" to forage at.
I observed a flock of ~40 White-winged Crossbills frequent these pines this
morning. The NW corner of the Ponquogue Beach parking lot is a close but
respectful viewing point.
