In what could best be described as ideal weather conditions for being
out on a boat in January despite the cold temperatures, I led a trip out
of Brooklyn that took us near shore and had us explore much of the coast
of Brooklyn.
Highlights were numerous close looks at Razorbills, numbering as
FWIW I saw a dead Saw Whet Owl against the median barrier on the belt
parkway in Brooklyn today, roughly in the vicinity of 176 street or
there abouts.

Derek Rogers and I have been searching for the Barnacle Goose that has
been around up until recently.
Both of us were able to relocate Greater White-fronted [ St Charles
cemetary as viewed from Wellwood ave ]

Joe Giunta, Sam Jannazzo and I (Sy Schiff) continued our new year (3 Jan) with
a birding day that included Pelham Bay Park.. We met in Hempstead Lake SP,
joining the South Shore Audubon group. There we found NORTHERN SHOVELER, COMMON
MERGANSERS, AMERICAN COOT, PIED-BILLED GREBES, GREAT BLUE HER
Target bird at Hecksher was red crossbill of which I saw several East of 7.
No luck with redpoll or longspur, and no white wing crossbills. Then on to
Huntington. After spending about 45 minutes from about 3:30 until 4:15 I
bumped into Dave Klauber and we spent about another half hour without
So Eastern Long Islanders don't feel left out of all the postings today, a
handsome male Common Redpoll spent all morning and early afternoon at my
backyard feeder in East Quogue. He was in the company of a Red-breasted
Nuthatch. Both birds spent most of their time on a black sunflower seed fee
6 Common Redpolls for last 3 days at our feeders usually in late afternoon.

An adult Bald Eagle was perched high in the trees by the viewing area at
the end of the boardwalk at Jamaica Bay's East Pond in Queens. Other than
this magnificent bird the East Pond itself was pretty quiet; mostly Ruddy
Ducks and Shovelers.

With the fading light, I was able to pick out a Greater White-fronted Goose in
the middle of the field at St. Charles Cemetary. It was among approx. 100
Canada Geese and looks to be the same bird that's been roaming about the area.
This morning, Belmont Lake was packed with geese, all toward the
This afternoon while finding the Lapland Longspur originally reported by
K.Feustel, I saw two Common Redpoll hanging out with the flock of 8 White
Winged Crossbill.
The Redpoll and Crossbill were at field 7,8 and the Long Spur was across
from field 6 towards the boat basin.

Ramble this morning, about 9:30 am. She was using the sock-type

There is a single Common Redpoll currently visiting the feeders at Westmoreland
Sanctuary. It's jockeying for position on the black oil sunflower tube feeder
with a half dozen Black-capped Chickadees and a couple Red-breasted Nuthatches.
