[nysbirds-l] "I ride the main road"...or was it line ?

2013-01-27 Thread ROBERT ADAMO

Yesterday, once the 11:00 AM Mass was over, I dropped my wife back home, after
promising to be home in time for a 3:20 movie in Mattituck. Hightailing it down
to Dune Rd., I was encouraged by the Turkey Vulture, that chose to traverse the
Jessup La. Bridge, Westhampton Beach, at the same time I did. It then landed on
the ice, a short ways west of the bridge and proceeded to dine on a dead duck -
spies unknown !
Driving west slowly to Cupsogue Co. Pk. and checking most of the pines along
the way, not a single crossbill did I see ! I did however, run into Artie
Kopplemen (Cresli) in the park's p/lot. He mentioned my recent post re: the ~
60 seal I had found there, and then told me of the 58 seals he had here
yesterday, topped by the 85 animals seen today. Artie leads seal walks on L.I.
in the winter, as well as whale watching trips during the summer months. Jim
Clinton and I were seasoned crew-hands on the Finback 2, when Artie first came
aboard. Although it was many years ago, I vividly remember the
full-bearded/afro-haired, "Captain Ahab-like" naturalist, Sam Sadove...who
ruled all, on the "watching"decks ! Sam ranted a lot, but he sure knew his
cetaceans...like the mighty Blue Whale(s) we found on each of the 2 trips out
of Montauk (morning & afternoon) on a day that was so foggy, visibility was
only ~ 50'.
I then (like Glen Campbell's "Wichita Lineman" who 'rides the main road') again
drove all the way to Shinnicock Inlet, and while I remain Red Crossbill-less, I
did see 2 A.Bitterns, both in the ditch that runs along the n/s of Dune Road (a
little e/o Dockers Res't.) and within ~ 100 yards of each other !
Cheers,Bob...P.S. We were on time for the movie, Les Miserable, and found it to
be similar to Lincoln, epic-like ! We were very impressed with all aspects of
these productions, especially the acting !

[nysbirds-l] Central/Eastern Suffolk birds, 1/27

2013-01-27 Thread John Gluth
Spent a pretty full day birding a few locations along Suffolk County's south
shore today (Sunday, 1/27, 9-5). I started at Smith Point Park where the
highlights were
1 FOX SPARROW, 1 "IPSWICH" SAVANNAH SPARROW, (both along the north edge of the
main parking lot), and a flock of ~20 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS
(in pines in the RV campground). In the grasslands of the Eastport Conservation
Area the E. Meadowlarks seen recently apparently had moved on, but I did
encounter
a large flock (~25) of FIELD SPARROWS, an immature male NORTHERN HARRIER, and
an AMERICAN WOODCOCK, which I managed to flush from the same spot
going in and coming out of the preserve. The Hampton Bays Common Raven pair did
not make an appearance during the 15 minutes I staked out the water tower.
I next birded Dune Road from Shinnecock Inlet to the Post Lane bridge.
Highlights were 3 different AMERICAN BITTERNS and a male AMERICAN KESTREL.
Hard's Lake
in Southaven County Park was mostly frozen and held few geese, none of them a
Greater White-fronted. Lastly I made a quick stop at the Bellport Marina to see
if any
interesting gulls were about. But the bay was frozen and the docks were
completely devoid of any gull species. eBird reports (with photos) for Smith
Pt., Eastport, and
Dune Rd.can be viewed here:

[nysbirds-l] North-Central LI: Ross's Goose, Vesper Sparrows +

2013-01-27 Thread Michael McBrien
The highlight, albeit brief, of a trip through north-central Suffolk
County was a flyover Ross's Goose in a flock of Canadas in
Northville. My dad and I searched for several hours, but we did not
see the bird again. During our searching, we encountered 3 Snow Goose
among the countless flocks of Canada Geese.

In Northville, we saw the continuing 13 American Pipits at the Reeves
Ave. Buffalo farm. An immature White-crowned Sparrow was nearby.
Over on Doctors Path, in addition to several flocks of Horned Larks,
we found a group of 109 pipits.

A bit earlier in the day, we encountered 5 Vesper Sparrows along Hulse
Landing Road in Calverton.

Good birding,
  Michael McBrien
  East Patchogue

Subject: NNYBirds: Great Gray Owl-Massena

Just saw a Great Gray Owl on the Campground Rd at Robert Moses State Park.
It was perched in a tree about 100 yards in on the north side of the road.
There is a 40 mph sign right near the location. I spotted it from near the
information booth building. Good thing I did not dismiss it as a Barred Owl!

[nysbirds-l] L.I. Longspurs

2013-01-27 Thread Steve Walter
LAPLAND LONGSPURs today: 1 at Jones Beach (by the gazebo), 2 at St. Charles
Cemetery (seen from the westernmost road, toward the south end). In both
cases, with Horned Larks (about 100 at St. Charles) (no geese when I was
there). Some other non-everyday birds at Jones Beach over the weekend:
Northern Goshawk, Bufflehead and N. Shoveler (probably only seen here when
frozen out of somewhere else), Am. Pipit, Red Crossbill (3), Chesnut-brown
Canary, Ruby-throated Sparrow. Pt. Lookout, yesterday, also had freeze
displaced Buffleheads and Greater Scaup, to go along with about 25 Common
Eiders. 6 Oystercatchers were on the jetties (first time I can remember that
in mid-winter, wintering ones are usually in the channels). Most photogenic
bird was an Ipswich Sparrow feeding for an extended time on the sand near
the base of the westernmost jetty (picture, if interested, is on my web site
http://www.stevewalternature.com/ on the recent work page -- there a couple
of interesting, though not highest quality pictures on the way there).

[nysbirds-l] Quest for Harlequins

2013-01-27 Thread Seth Ausubel
Since the Harlequin Ducks have seldom been at Pt. Lookout this winter, Rich
Kelly and I set out on a systematic quest to find them among the jetties at
Long Beach. We started at Lafayette St. and worked east 2 blocks at a time. We
finally found the 3 Harlequin Ducks at the first jetty east of Neptune Blvd.
There is one drake. The hybrid 3rd winter Herring-Lesser Black-backed Gull
remains around the same jetty, and there are lots of gulls around, though
nothing else of interest. There were also about 6 Purple Sandpipers scattered
around the jetties, another species that has been rather scarce this winter.

[nysbirds-l] Wintery Birds @ Jones Beach 1/26

2013-01-27 Thread gabriel willow
I led a winter birding excursion for NYC Audubon to Jones Beach yesterday.  I
think the Snowy Owl has been widely-reported enough that I can mention him
without crossing any ethical bounds... and what a treat!  It was actually my
first Snowy Owl... I've been chasing this bird all over the Northeast for
25-odd years, and they've somehow always eluded me, until now.  I have now seen
every owl species in North America, a good feeling!
He was sort of the ultimate Snowy Owl too: all white, and just massive
(although I assume females are larger still).
We had a flock of about 14 Snow Buntings fly right over the owl, quite an
arctic tableau!
Additional sightings of interest included a Marsh Wren hopping along the edge
of the phragmites by a path; about 30-40 Horned Larks near the Coastguard
Station; a couple Northern Gannets flying over the waves, several Red-throated
and Common Loons, and great views of a young Peregrine Falcon and a couple of
Northern Harriers hunting over the marshes and dunes.
Not a bad day!
One thing we missed was Purple Sandpiper; I haven't seen any at their usual
hangout in Redhook either this winter.

[nysbirds-l] Common Raven in Brooklyn (Kings Co.)

2013-01-27 Thread Matthew Wills
Witnessed an aerial ballet/battle between a red-tailed hawk and common raven
over Green-Wood Cemetery this morning at 10:35. Lasted 5-7 minutes, with the
birds circling around each other and the hawk being the main aggressor,
dive-bombing the raven. They worked their way south with a few vocalizations

[nysbirds-l] Dark-morph Red-tailed Hawk Madison County

2013-01-27 Thread Thomas Salo
12 baited camera traps are operating this winter in New York as part of
Todd Katzner's Appalachian Eagles project. At a site in Madison County
an unusual dark-morph Red-tailed Hawk was photographed on 19 January by
Kevin Pace. Tom Carrolan provides a link to a good photos of this
interesting bird at

http://www.flickr.com/photos/37410965@N05/8414174419/in/photostream/

Good numbers of both Golden and Bald Eagle are being observed at sites
in Delaware and Otsego counties this winter. One of the Otsego County
sites recently recorded a Red-shouldered Hawk - a rarity in winter in
the colder regions of New York and the first for this project in our state.

The project has been active in New York since 2010. More information on
the project can be found at www.appalachianeagles.org, including
photographs from many of the sites. Anyone interested in participating
in this project in the future should contact me off the list.

[nysbirds-l] Hudson River Eagles and More

2013-01-27 Thread John Askildsen
Yesterday, Kirsten and I surveyed the Hudson River from the Dutchess/Putnam
County line, south into Westchester, to Croton Point and then inland to the
Croton Reservoir. We came up with about 55 eagles, most of which were
concentrated in Peekskill, from the Bear Mountain Overlook, soouth to China
Pier. Then there was a collection of about 10 or so at Croton Reservoir.

we ran into a Mearns Club group that had started out earlier and felt would
probably tally around 75 or so eagles, based on our comparison of notes. These
eagles have apparently just arrived on the scene with the blast of cold air,
leading to the progressive freezing of lakes and ponds, and eventually, the
Hudson, which is now showing some signs of freezing up, north of Georges
Island.

Other birds of note from yesterday include for us, an adult Peregrine we found
roosting and hunting in the area of the Taconic Parkway's (northbound) bridge
that span the croton reservoir. it made a pass at a Cooper's hawk and pretty
much stuck to the top of the bridge's superstructure. we also heard from the
Mearns Club group of a roosting Peregrine frequenting the Westchester County
garbage plant, next to China Pier in peekskill.

they also had a Merlin somewhere in the area as well. There is currently a very
nice collection of waterfowl on the Croton reservoir's south side, about midway
between the dam and the Taconic Parkway's Croton River Bridges. It consists of
a few hundred birds, primarily hooded and common mergs, gadwall, ruddy duck,
coot, ringneck and more. This side of the reservoir may be accessed via
"reservoir rd", which skirts the south side of the reservoir.

Croton Point Park seemed rather birdless. The arificial meadow has been mowed,
making it look more appealing to golfers than birders (and birds). Ah, the
Westchester County Parks Dept management team 'strikes again'.

[nysbirds-l] Common Redpolls - Bronx & Common Ravens Queens....

2013-01-27 Thread Andrew Baksh
Other highlights from the Bronx yesterday were COMMON REDPOLLS at Rodman's Neck
near the parking lot. At least 9 in a mixed flock that included American
Goldfinches. Very likely the same flock that Eric Miller, Arie Gilbert, Bob
Hayes and I found last week. Many thanks to Rob Jett who clued me in to their
continued presence in the area. The birds were feeding on sweet gum balls so
check the nearby trees if you go looking for them.

Later on in Queens, my friend Andria and I had a very obliging BROWN THRASHER
near the soccer field at Alley Pond Park. A walk into the woods did not yield
much, but we were pleasantly surprised to hear and see 2 COMMON RAVENS as we
exited the "blue trail" heading back towards the upper Parking lot. The RAVENS
were flying in a south westerly direction.

2013-01-27 Thread Angus Wilson
Following up on Seth's post, now at dusk there are 5 Harlequins at the jetty,
this is Roosevelt Blvd in Long Beach (Nassau Co). Adult male, 3 fems and a
subaduld male. Too dark to view gulls, and most moved out to roost.

[nysbirds-l] I ride the main road...or was it line ?

Jim
Clinton and I were seasoned crew-hands on the Finback 2, when Artie first came
aboard. Although it was many years ago, I vividly remember the
full-bearded/afro-haired, Captain Ahab-like naturalist, Sam Sadove...who
ruled all, on the watchingdecks ! Sam ranted a lot, but he sure knew his
cetaceans...like the mighty Blue Whale(s) we found on each of the 2 trips out
of Montauk (morning afternoon) on a day that was so foggy, visibility was
only ~ 50'.
I then (like Glen Campbell's Wichita Lineman who 'rides the main road') again
drove all the way to Shinnicock Inlet, and while I remain Red Crossbill-less, I
did see 2 A.Bitterns, both in the ditch that runs along the n/s of Dune Road (a
little e/o Dockers Res't.) and within ~ 100 yards of each other !
Cheers,Bob...P.S. We were on time for the movie, Les Miserable, and found it to
be similar to Lincoln, epic-like ! We were very impressed with all aspects of
these productions, especially the acting !
