[nysbirds-l] C.P. Reservoir Iceland Gull update

2013-01-29 Thread Nadir Souirgi
The Iceland Gull was still present on the Central Park Reservoir as of 5:30
this evening. It lingered at the periphery of a small flock of Ring-billed and
Herring Gulls. The vast majority of the remaining gulls took off for the night
heading east and west. The flock was located on an ice sheet somewhat west of
the berm at about 90th St.- so about 1-2 city blocks N/N.W. of the fountain.

[nysbirds-l] Blydenburgh Geese - incl. injured Snow Goose (Suffolk)

2013-01-29 Thread Peter Scully
White-fronts were at Blydenburgh County Park this morning until just after 8:00
when the lion's share of geese began moving out.   A Snow Goose that has been
on the pond since yesterday morning is apparently injured, with two drooping
wings.  It was feeding nervously on the side of the main road through the park
at around noon.  I contacted rehabbers, but the goose was back on the ice at
5:00, so looks like attempts to help the bird were unsuccessful.

[nysbirds-l] St. Charles Cemetery Barnacle Goose continues

2013-01-29 Thread John Gluth
After just missing the Greater White-fronted geese at Blydenburgh County Park
in the morning, I tried in the afternoon for the bird that has been seen
repeatedly at St. Charles Cemetery since December. Well, I struck out on that
bird too, but managed to find the continuing BARNACLE GOOSE and CACKLING GOOSE.
The former was first seen with
a flock of ~100 Canada geese along the eastern edge of the cemetery, south of
the Wellwood Avenue entrance. On my way to the north entrance of the cemetery I
encountered
a much larger flock of Canadas (~500) in the northeast quadrant. Given the
number of birds I figured the odds were pretty good that the white-fronted
would be among them.
But over an hour spent repeatedly scoping the flock from edge to edge did not
bear fruit. I did spot the Cackler though, and the flock with the Barnacle
eventually flew in to swell the flock size. Smaller groups of various sizes
came and went while I was there, but the white-fronted never did arrive. Also
present was a probable Canada X domestic goose hybrid. My eBird report with
photos is here: http://ebird.org/ebird/ny/view/checklist?subID=S12765805

[nysbirds-l] White-winged Junco in Rockland Co.

2013-01-29 Thread Alan Wells
Hi All,

Carol Weiss, Rockland Audubon Society's recorder of rare and unusual birds
in Rockland Co., received the following report from Doris Metraux.

"On Friday afternoon I was puzzled by something bright white in one of my
shrubs. A White-winged Junco (Junco hyemalis aikeni) was giving me a frontal
view. The bird clearly wanted to come for my seed which I throw on the
ground. When he changed his location and briefly perched on a flowerbox I
got a good look until one of my ordinary juncos became very belligerent and
chased him away. Since I have no picture my description will have to do: He
was quite a bit larger than his wintering cousins, had a snow-white belly, a
bone-colored big bill, black lores and was otherwise pale gray with a light
brown wash on his back. He also had two very distinct wingbars on each side.
"

Doris is longtime RAS member and a very experienced, reliable observer. She
lives in the Stony Point area of Rockland Co., NY.

As I was not familiar with this subspecies in southern New York, I checked a
few sources for previous County records. The Oregon and Pink-sided forms
have been recorded sporadically from Rockland Co., but I could find no
previous records of the White-wing form. According to Bull's Birds of New
York State (1998 edition, ed. Levine), there were no know records of the
White-winged form from NY State. The winter range of this form appears to be
restricted to the Great Plains and adjacent mountain states. Levine does
mention that approximately 2-3% of the Slate-colored Juncos have white on
the wings, but still can be separated by size (aikeni is larger).

My question: are there any list members familiar with this form? If so, are
you aware of any previous records in our area?

I guess I now need to start checking all of those juncos a little more
closely!

Alan Wells

Good morning,

Per Joe's comments, please do not open the link that was unknowingly

Everyone,

I received a message from the NYS list this morning that was basically just a
link to a website. This is probably a virus so I would advise anyone else who
received it to not click on it and to delete it. If anyone knows the Cindy
involved who sent it you might want to contact her since she is probably
unaware of the message even being sent out under her email address.

[nysbirds-l] White-winged Junco in Rockland Co.

2013-01-29 Thread Alan Wells
Hi All,

Carol Weiss, Rockland Audubon Society's recorder of rare and unusual birds
in Rockland Co., received the following report from Doris Metraux.

On Friday afternoon I was puzzled by something bright white in one of my

I guess I now need to start checking all of those juncos a little more
closely!
