Fwd: [nysbirds-l] Daniel's Lane, Sagaponack

2013-09-12 Thread robert adamo
I'm sure many on this list remember making the obligatory fall trip out to
the "dug" potato fields of Daniels, Hedges and Parsonage Lanes for the
"pipers of the fields", as well as Whimbrel, or as it was known then,
Hudsonian Curlew...this of course, was before the proliferation of sod
fields. I first experienced the productivity of this part of Sagaponack on
a Gil Raynor led field trip. Normally, we would have started the day at
Montauk Point, working ourselves back to these fields, with stops in
between, at Montauk, Napeauge, Amagansett and E.Hampton. Sag Pond and Mecox
Bay usually followed the potato fields, and if there was enough time, we
would check out Shinnicock Inlet and Dune Rd., Hampton Bays. We did quite
well most of the time, by visiting these varied and proven habitats,
however, some of the time we had "insider information". While we all would
check the N.Y.C. R.B.A. on the day of the week it was updated ( I believe
on Thursday or Friday night ), Gil and Tom Davis (Mr. R.B.A. himself) had a
close relationship, one that had Tom (a N.Y.Telephone office employee)
always calling Gil, when something good was found ! Today, most of those
fields (with their "black" dirt, considered the richest in N.Y.S.) are now
occupied by many large houses, of many different architectural
styles...some of which, to me, being constructed in bad taste !

Cheers,
Bob

[nysbirds-l] Eastport and Riverhead sods--Buff-breasted Sandpipers, Am. Golden Plovers

2013-09-12 Thread John Gluth
A check of the sod farms in Eastport and Riverhead this afternoon was quite
productive. I started in Eastport with the field on the west side of Eastport
Manor Road. Among ~15 Killdeer was a single juvenile BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER.
At times this bird foraged within 25 ft. of the road, in some longer grass
near a generator inside a chain link fence. Up in Riverhead, on the Osborn
Avenue field, there were 2 more Buffies, 15 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS, and
several Least Sandpipers. Farther east, on the field west of Route 105 and
south of Sound Ave. were another 12 Golden Plovers. I found no shorebirds at
all on the field just east of the Roanoke Vineyard, not even a Killdeer.
Another 7 Goldens were on a field on the west side of Edwards Avenue, about
halfway between Sound Ave. and Rte. 25.

[nysbirds-l] Sagaponack Pond

2013-09-12 Thread pmaxp
The pond was opened to the ocean two or three days ago and the decrease in
water level has exposed productive mud/sand flats. The opening closed naturally
last night so the water level will increase steadily in the coming days.

This morning (and yesterday evening) there were 15 species of shorebirds
present.

Today's highlights:
Baird's Sandpiper-2
White-rumped Sandpiper-6
Stilt Sandpiper-1

Also:

Royal Tern-1

[nysbirds-l] Jamaica Bay Wilson's Phalarope--yes

2013-09-12 Thread syschiff
September 12. Slow day for land and shorebirds.

The day started with a short visit with the South Shore Audubon at Hempstead
Lake SP. Birds included. SOLITARY SANDPIPER, GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHER, singing
WARBLING VIREO, "yellow green" SCARLET TANAGER and 5 warblers, NORTHERN
WATERTHRUSH and NORTHERN PARULA the most interesting.

Five of us then went on to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, north end of the East
Pond. Disappointing! There were only about 100 shorebirds, 3/4 SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPERS, 1/4 SEMIPALMATED PLOVER. Also, a few LEAST SANDPIPERS, 2 LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, 1 WESTERN SANDPIPER (a target bird for all) and the WILSON'S
PHALAROPE (the reason for the trip). The Phalarope was feeding south of the
island along the east edge of the pond, never venturing into the water,

We saw and heard a WHITE-EYED VIREO singing as we walked from the parking lot
to the pond entrance road.

Quiet in the park; very quiet at Jamaica Bay. Still, 2 target birds for the
day. Not so bad after all.

Re:[nysbirds-l] [ebirdsnyc] Central Park Virginia Rail. - YES

2013-09-12 Thread Anders Peltomaa
Hi all,
I've been getting a few emails asking for directions to the spot where we
have seen the Virginia Rail. So I will try to describe it.

Walking in from Central Park West and 103rd Street entrance, head down the
path going down to the NE end of the pool (straight down the hill) cross
the rustic bridge and make a left down the stairs to the stone arch. Keep
walking with the stream on your left, walk over the second rustic bridge
(the main stream still on your left), hang left and walk down the paved
path to the second wood chip path on your left leading down to the stream.
The jewel weeds are on the opposite side of the stream and that is where
the Rail was showing.

As far as I know the Rail has only been seen late in the afternoon. There
is a lot of foot traffic in the area during the morning with people and
dogs (many off the leash). So, you might have a better chance of seeing it
at the end of the day.

[nysbirds-l] Sagaponack Pond

2013-09-12 Thread pmaxp
The pond was opened to the ocean two or three days ago and the decrease in
water level has exposed productive mud/sand flats. The opening closed naturally
last night so the water level will increase steadily in the coming days.

This morning (and yesterday evening) there were 15 species of shorebirds
present.

Today's highlights:
Baird's Sandpiper-2
White-rumped Sandpiper-6
Stilt Sandpiper-1

Also:

Royal Tern-1

Another 7 Goldens were on a field on the west side of Edwards Avenue, about
halfway between Sound Ave. and Rte. 25.

SANDHILL CRANES are solidifying their regular presence in
the region. September 10, two adult cranes with a full grown
juvenile at Kumpf Marsh in the Iroquois Refuge. Earlier in
the summer, a young SANDHILL CRANE was found in the nearby
  Oak Orchard Wildlife Management Area.

Also in the Iroquois Refuge, at Mohawk Pool a tagged GREAT

traced to a nestling banded on Lake Huron's Georgian Bay, in
  the summer of 2012.

September 7, the BOS field trip to Buckhorn Island State

PURPLE MARTINS descending into the reed beds at Sunken
Island. Over 20 years ago, there were multiple counts of
over 10,000 MARTINS along the Niagara River.

AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS continue on the Niagara Peninsula of

Fwd: [nysbirds-l] Daniel's Lane, Sagaponack

2013-09-12 Thread robert adamo
I'm sure many on this list remember making the obligatory fall trip out to
the dug potato fields of Daniels, Hedges and Parsonage Lanes for the
pipers of the fields, as well as Whimbrel, or as it was known then,
Hudsonian Curlew...this of course, was before the proliferation of sod
We did quite
well most of the time, by visiting these varied and proven habitats,
however, some of the time we had insider information.
Today, most of those
fields (with their black dirt, considered the richest in N.Y.S.) are now
occupied by many large houses, of many different architectural
styles...some of which, to me, being constructed in bad taste !

Cheers,
Bob
