Today, most of my time in the field was spent taking pictures of common
birds with my new camera, delighting in it's "zooming" properties !
This morning, the first 1/8 mile of shoreline w/o Shinnicock Inlet hosted a
huge number of birds, as they fed on a huge mass of clams & "snails", that

This Dark Phase bird is likely the same bird I saw this past Friday (Feb.
14) about a half mile south of Norman J. Levy Preserve, seen well enough
while driving North on the Meadowbrook Pkwy. This was at about 5PM.

There have been a lot of recent reports of Red-necked Grebes in locations where
they're not seen often, like rivers on Long Island. I read that the Great lakes
are 75% frozen over, so this is probably driving them south. A similar event
happened maybe 10 -15 years ago when they showed up in
Of course, it's a RED-NECKED GREBE. I was going to blame it on coming in
from the cold and typing on the phone (which I hate). But since the error
occurred twice (subject line and text) and "L" is nowhere near "R" on the
keyboard, I suspect it must be "auto correct" at work. Can we get software
The previously reported red necked grebe was still present in the Erie
Basin off Red Hook, Brooklyn today at noon. It was visible at some distance
(scope best) from the waterfront walkway west of the IKEA ferry landing.
The bird was fishing / diving towards the end of the abandoned and derelict

This morning I saw the Red-necked Grebe reported by Anders Peltomaa yesterday,
in the water directly behind the IKEA in Red Hook, splitting its time on either
side of a long concrete pier, with two cranes at its end, that extends away
from a large, three-sided IKEA sign. There were also a few
