[nysbirds-l] eBird.org: Recent Additions to County Checklists

2017-11-16 Thread Ben Cacace
When working on the NYS eBird Hotspots wiki I'll compare the previous bar
chart list of species with the current one picking up any additions or
deletions. By going to each county's 'Overview' page you can determine the
date the species was added by county. Some are from newly submitted
checklists from many months / years ago.

It isn't possible to spot these additions from old checklists. On the
'Overview' page you can sort on 'First Seen' but if the species wasn't
added recently it won't appear at the top of the list.

For each county on the NYS eBird Hotspots site click the 'Overview' link on
the 'Explore a Location' line:

Since last update: 28 days

Green represents a New York State first and yellow highlights a species
added for the first time over the past few months.

[nysbirds-l] Prospect Lake Common Gallinule (Kings)

2017-11-16 Thread prosbird

The COMMON GALLINULE has decided to travel.

Kathy Toomey tweeted out a note at 315 this afternoon that she spotted the bird
in the reeds between West Island and the Rustic Shelter. This is across the
lake from the Rink, now the southwest Lake the place to see the Gallinule. The
best vantage might be the half moon bench area (opp the island) looking
northwest.

( nearest Train is F to Fort hamilton Parkway if this bird sticks to the spot)

[nysbirds-l] Good Seabird Flight at Robert Moses State Park (Suffolk Co.)

2017-11-16 Thread Ken Feustel
Four birders enjoyed a good seabird flight at RMSP this morning on a southeast
wind, featuring a close-in dark morph Northern Fulmar (which I did not get on),
four adult Black-legged Kittiwakes, three Parasitic Jaegers, twelve Razorbills,
and the expected loon and sea duck species. Halfway through our watch a heavy
rain moved in, and the wind shifted west resulting in a decline in seabird
variety. During our watch hundreds of Bonaparte’s Gulls were observed well
off-shore, getting off the water in response to harassment from a Parasitic
Jaeger. Two flyby Royal Terns were also observed.

On a related note, the immature Hudsonian Godwit continues at Heckscher State
Park Field 7.

Good Birding,

Ken & Sue Feustel, Shai Mitra, Pat Lindsay

The SAY'S PHOEBE was not relocated after I texted it out and posted it to
the birding listservs on Sunday, in spite of people arriving at the site not
long afterward. By the way, Vicki Rothman sent me a diagnostic photo of the
bird that she took.

Good birding!
