[nysbirds-l] Record number of Turkey Vultures at Riverhead Roost

2018-03-18 Thread robert adamo
Spurred on by an email to me re: an ongoing Turkey Vulture presence in
Asharoken, I decided to check out our local roosting complex today.
Arriving at the Roanoke Ave Elementary School ~ 1730, I found 3 T.V's. atop
the school's chimney. After finding 3 of the other regular spots empty, I
hit today's "mother load" at the spruce stand located on the w/s of
Griffing Ave, just s/o the intersection with Lincoln St. My first count was
a soft 21-24, but after awhile a group of them took off, flew around a bit
and came back, with some of them landing on other nearby spruces located on
Lincoln St., to both the east & west of Griffing Ave. While trying to find
a B.V. among them, I noticed more T.V's. arriving. When I left at ~ 1910,
the T.V. count had climbed to 55...the highest ever !

Cheers,
Bob

[nysbirds-l] EPCAL and Dune Road

2018-03-18 Thread leormand
A brief visit to EPCAL produced few birds. A pair of bluebirds bear the nesting
boxes, a couple red-tailed hawks and one kestrel were the only things
noteworthy.

On the way to the south shore I observed an adult bald eagle near Pleasure
Drive and Sunrise Highway flying very high.

Dune road was also quiet with no raptors seen. A red-breasted merganser was in
a roadside ditch providing unusually close views and large raft of common eider
were inside the inlet.

[nysbirds-l] Male Pileated Woodpecker, Yonkers, NY

2018-03-18 Thread PnK L
My apologies if this is a double posting but it does not appear the first
email went through?

This morning we got a late start on the day and were walking our dogs in
our neighborhood, Colonial Heights in Yonkers. Kevin and I left home at
930. At 940 we heard a very loud strident call and looked up in a tree to
see an adult Male Pileated woodpecker!! It was first sighted at the corner
or LaSalle Drive and Carlton Ave. Fortunately for us, he was headed in our
direction! So for the next 30 minutes he made his way southward down the
ridge we were walking along moving from tree to tree. We finally lost
sight of him at the corner of Mayflower Drive and Colonial Parkway and he
was still working his way southward towards Bronxville. Since we were
walking at the top of the ridge he was often virtually at eye level and
less than 50-100 feet away! We watched him pull off large 8-12 inch pieces
of bark, heard him call many times and heard him drumming on various
trees. Really incredible. Only the 4th time we have seen a Pileated
Woodpecker and by far the longest and best looks we have ever had.
Unfortunately we only had our iPhones with us so did not get any "good"
shots but did get shots that probably will serve as "evidence" if it is
required.

Other birds seen were a light morph red tail hawk being mobbed by a pair of
fish crows. The fish crows were also seen carrying nesting materials.
Cardinals(singing), song sparrows(singing), white throated
sparrows(singing), chickadees, house finch and gold finch also seen this
morning.

Good Birding,

Paula and Kevin Landdeck

Re:[nysbirds-l] [ebirdsnyc] MEW GULL Brooklyn Army Terminal

2018-03-18 Thread zach schwartz-weinstein
I’m at Brooklyn Army terminal now. A combination of a peregrine and some
fast vehicles put all the Gulls up off the pier, but before they did, I was
able to scan the Gull flock carefully, and all the smaller Laruses were
definitely ring-billed. Two birders here told me that they had checked
bush terminal park without success, but I am seeing some birds that look
like they are heading north.

2018-03-18 Thread matt klein
The Red-Necked Grebe continues at Restoration Pond along with most of the other
now usual species (Redhead, Ruddy, Ring-Necked, etc.). Also of note was a flock
of Rusty Blackbirds. They were in a tree by the recently dedicated F. Trump
underpass.
