This morning 9:00 am there was a pink footed goose (presumably the same
reported over the past few weeks) and two snow geese in a flock of about 300
Canada geese in the field on the south side of Rte 27 opposite the riding stable

even though I missed the Kirtland's in Central Park, the East End provided
plenty to make up for it! Especially wonderful were great views of a mature
American Bald Eagle who sat cooperatively on a log on a sand spit in Mecox Bay
for about 30 minutes before providing exquisite views in flight

FOS for me: a dozen purple martins appeared at Georgica Pond this afternoon,
and quickly dispatched 2 starlings and a red wing blackbird. I expect more of
the colony will follow. Also spotted a surprising seven great blue herons and
a single blue winged teal on Georgica Cove.

Are the Indigo Buntings (and Orioles) likely to remain in such large numbers

We had a pair of bluebirds that successfully raised two broods in East Hampton
this summer. As has been the case for at least the past 3 years in October,
there is now a very active group of 6-8 bluebirds excitingly inspecting the
boxes, so I am curious to know if they are checking out housing

Probably last of season (although first of 2014 Year for me) Snowy owl still
present yesterday in Hampton Bays, along with my FOS American Oystercatcher.
Also sighted many Brants, red-breaasted mergansers and many flashy red wing
blackbirds and boat tailed grackles. Large flocks of Robins
heading that way (Hampton Bays-Quogue, Ponquogue Bridge) this afternoon and
wondering whether anyone has seen the snowy owl or other rarities in the past
few days. Thanks!

Tom Fiore's post this morning got me to brave the chill and happily locate the
wigeons (3), the lone Red-breasted grebe, a wood duck pair, coots, northern
shovelers, lingering buffleheads and a surprise pair of red-breasted mergansers
at the south end west of the pump house.Good day for ducks!
First arrivals in the Georgica Pond area this past weekend. Also spotted newly
arrived house wren, chipping sparrow and Eastern phoebe.

Productive birding on the East End today starting with a dozen Wilson snipes
who flew into our front yard at Geogica Cove, joining some some 30 Green winged
teal, assorted mergansers, a group of about 16 Bonaparte's gulls who have been
here for several weeks, and 8 killdeer. Two FOS Osprey
Hoping for another glimpse of the snowy owl that was still present near Lazy
Point last weekend, I found a FOS Eastern Willet instead. Time to move on from
wintering birds apparently! Other weekend highlights were at least four very
active male woodcocks at Poxabogue park last Sunday evening,
Beginning to look a lot more spring-like in East Hampton these days. Georgica
Cove has a pair of blue winged teal that seem to have arrived this morning,
multiple barn swallows and lots of female red-winged blackbirds, joining the
tree swallows and male red wings who arrived a few weeks ago.
The weekend produced multiple FOS sightings on the East End (East Hampton to
Water Mill) including
Ruby throated hummingbird indigo bunting (3)pine warblersavannah sparrowpurple
martins (4)Green heron (Georgica Cove)lesser yellowlegs (2) along with
previously sighted greater yellowlegs
