[nysbirds-l] Sedge Wrens - Freshkills Park, Staten Island

2020-08-06 Thread José R . Ramírez-Garofalo
This morning Shannon Curley, Cait Field and I found a pair of Sedge Wrens
at Freshkills Park on Staten Island. The birds were present in the section
of the east landfill mound where we have our highest densities of
Grasshopper Sparrows. The date is consistent with (potential) breeding, and
the habitat is certainly appropriate-- so, we will keep an eye on things.

Shannon got some great shots of one of the birds, and I was able to record
vocalizations.

Here is our eBird checklist with photos and audio:
https://ebird.org/checklist/S72174195

Note on access: Outside of research and management activities--and
occasional public programs (pre-COVID)--there is no access to Freshkills.

Cheers,
Jose & Shannon

location that it has been frequenting since last weekend. The bird was
salvaged under USFWS/DEC permits and is now at the American Museum of

[nysbirds-l] Update on Staten Island Wood Stork

2021-08-05 Thread José R . Ramírez-Garofalo
Hi all,

As of this evening the Wood Stork is back at the Amazon Fulfilment Center
on Staten Island.

Please do not walk around the pond edge, do not walk *into* the water for
photos (yes, this happened..), and please stay along the road while viewing
the bird—it has been flushed by observers moving too close.

Thank you--

[nysbirds-l] Tropical Kingbird - Staten Island

2021-09-26 Thread José R . Ramírez-Garofalo
There is currently a Tropical Kingbird at Mount Loretto Unique Area on the
south shore of Staten Island, found by Dick Veit. Both he and Anthony
Ciancimino have heard the bird, and taken photos.

You can get there by taking the woodlot path, to the right of the parking
lot.

Just found a Sedge Wren in the same spot as LeConte’s and Grasshopper
Sparrow that Dick Veit found earlier. Both birds still here, Sedge Wren
difficult to locate.

Thank you--

Jose Ramirez-Garofalo, Anthony Ciancimino, Shannon Curley

[nysbirds-l] Update on Staten Island Wood Stork

2021-08-09 Thread José R . Ramírez-Garofalo
All—

The Staten Island Wood Stork was found dead this afternoon in the same
location that it has been frequenting since last weekend. The bird was
salvaged under USFWS/DEC permits and is now at the American Museum of
Natural History. We will provide further information when we have it—

[nysbirds-l] Tropical Kingbird - Staten Island

2021-09-26 Thread José R . Ramírez-Garofalo
There is currently a Tropical Kingbird at Mount Loretto Unique Area on the
south shore of Staten Island, found by Dick Veit. Both he and Anthony
Ciancimino have heard the bird, and taken photos.

You can get there by taking the woodlot path, to the right of the parking
lot.
