Re: [nysbirds-l] [GeneseeBirds-L] Limpkin - Niagara County
Larry et al,The fact that so many are willing to travel so far to share in this experience is a VERY strong argument for conservation, and should not be ignored. Lehman and others have produced positive economic impact studies showing the benefit of a rarity showing up. While our carbon footprint is of concern, I wish you would refrain from urinating on our parade, some of us get a tremendous amount of joy experiencing nature, even if it means a epic journey by car. So don't fly for a vacation, because air travel is far worse than car emissions and so on. Or kill bird tourism too while you're at it. I believe your heart is in the right place, but we must still weigh the positives vs the negatives. Apologies to any list members who found this message distasteful. It is sticking to a very small area – a linear strip about 50 yards long. If you don’t see it, just carefully check the weeds at the base of the slope for any movement. It can really hide in there! If you have not seen the bird by now, unfortunately, your opportunity may soon be over. I know this will be disappointing/upsetting to those who have had no chance to chase it during the week and were waiting for the weekend. Although there may be disagreement on whether or not humans should intervene, there is strong consensus among people that I have talked with that the health of this bird should be the primary consideration. A rehabilitator has been alerted who is willing to transport the bird to Florida. Although the bird seems fine now, we know how quickly things can change. We are fairly certain from past experience (the Anhinga near Rochester), that this bird will not simply leave when things get really bad for it. Therefore, its capture may come sooner rather than later. Capturing a healthy bird often results in a better outcome than capturing one that is already unwell. Please don’t ask me exactly when this will occur because I don’t know. It could be today. We will continue to monitor the Limpkin and try to assess its condition, as well as watch what the weather is or will be doing. The snowstorm in Buffalo is horrendous right now and there is a driving ban in parts of Buffalo and the suburbs. Nobody should be driving into or close to the city to see this bird. Next to it is a blue-gray shed. The weeds that it was hanging out in all afternoon on Tuesday are between those two buildings, which are only 15 feet apart. The bird sometimes moves behind one of the buildings but you can usually find it by moving around. It is close, only 30 feet or so away, though usually obscured or made invisible by weeds, and does not seem particularly concerned about people. However, please do not surround it, as it does sometimes like to come out into the open. I suggest that people stay off the grass in order to give it some space. You will still get great views. RE: [nysbirds-l] RWSW Not yet
I went in search of the VG er, Violet-green Swallow, and did not catch up with it - though I did catch up with Richard Guthrie. Most if not all of us like short cuts, which include banding codes. They may serve banders well who use them professionally and are intimately familiar with that group’s vernacular, but for others, it can ( and obviously does ) lead to discord. I admit that at times being stumped by a code whose meaning escapes me. While there may have been temporary frustration, speaking for myself it does not foment much ado. To me, its no different to throw a HERG into the text, as it is to throw in the terms remiges, or patagial bar. I can look it up, because I have an interest in birds and birding and it’s a learning experience. When I am unfamiliar with a term I used to look it up in the dictionary. Now, all I have to do is double-click to highlight the word, right-click on it, and select “ search google for (the word)”. For band codes, I use the Sibley app when necessary. It allows one to search for a bird by band code. Mystery solved. Yeah, spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, and incorrect band codes etc can interrupt the cognitive flow, but I suspect that some do not want to be ‘inconvenienced’ by having to do such odious work as ‘looking it up’ or knowing that the author used the wrong choice between they’re, their, or there. Oh well. In lieu of band codes I have found simple abbreviations to work as well if not better in saving my lazy self from the tortuous chore of spelling out the complete name. W pel may be easier than AWPE, for example. At other times I have found that 3-3 is better than the standard 2-2 of band codes. BarSwa and BanSwa eliminates one of many collisions that are inevitable, and only requires 2 more letters typed! Even the spoken word has room for simplification; one might say “Rough-wing” instead of Northern Rough-winged Swallow or “Moe Doe” instead of Mourning Dove. I enjoy the portmanteau and find that Redhatch rolls off the tongue so much better than Red-breasted Nuthatch; as does Americrow, Rublet, and many others. So while an erroneous band code may be upsetting to some, trust me, its nowhere near as upsetting as attempting to relocate that swallow several hours distant and not succeeding. At least peak migration is just around the corner!Arie Gilbert North Babylon NY Sent from my T-Mobile 5G Device Original message From: Richard Guthrie Date: 4/22/21 2:44 PM (GMT-05:00) To: NYSBIRDS_L , Hmbirds Subject: [nysbirds-l] RWSW Not yet Several birders here. Re: [nysbirds-l] Possible Ferruginous Hawk Orange co.
It is good to know no one behaved badly. Very good. But it has happened in this region in the past. Egregiously. You were asked to leave because of *what -others- did in the past.* I am not privy to the private or not status of this particular road, but I know of similar conflicts elsewhere where the road is absolutely not private. This is what happens to the well behaved following those who do not and piss off the locals. And so it goes. Re: [nysbirds-l] N.Y. County (NYC), 1/10 & prior days: L. B.-b. Gull, 2 W. Tanagers, E. Phoebe, etc.
Liam et alInnocuous reminders of ethics by Tom is not the issue. The vitriol against those who post photos of owls, or pass along their location as a consequence is the problem. Time and again I have witnessed amateur photographers ( despite possessing rather expensive equipment) crowd and or chase owls, and some nitwits cut branches to get better shots. There are bad actors who result in limited publicity of these birds and Gus may frustrate them. And they may take this frustration out on him. It has been laughable to me to see people railing against others getting too close to an owl in central park, while non birders were walking much closer, talking loudly, and had dogs in tow. ...perspective...FWIW birding Bob in my estimation overuses tape. But it annoys birders FAR more than any perceived injury to the birds. I wish people behaved better, but they don't. It would be great if we didn't have to worry about the ill informed doing harm, but thats the reality. I myself was berated by an random adjacent birder who chastised me for using a laser to point out a bird. The beam was nowhere near the bird, but he felt strongly that i was going to blind it. No. Not at all. People need to chill. I hope that Gus's fears and issues are unfounded, but nowadays, probably not. Gus: sorry to hear it. Tom is really not the issue though IMHO. (or at least ask him to change his style) Here is why. After I joined this list, I became fond of his emails because of the valuable info he provides about the birds of Manhattan. I also noted that at the end of every email he thanks the birders who follow birding ethics focusing on few issues: minimizing disturbance to birds, not playing recorder and not disclosing roost location. At the beginning it didn’t bother me and I reached a point when I stopped reading that paragraph. But lately, it started to bother me because I found out that when you repeat certain “propaganda” over and over and over again, it will lead to radicalization of people. Ask President Trump about that. I remember when Mr. Robert DeCandido wrote an email telling people that he was assaulted by one birder because he was playing birds songs in Central park. This is one form of radicalization. Birders think they are entitled to do anything to protect birds, even violence against another human being. I am also a victim of this radicalization. Because I post photos of owls on twitter, I was subjected to what I call a “cancel culture.” Some birders started boycotting me and started to spread false rumors about me that I am a danger to birds. They even apply their “cancel culture” on any person who is perceived as a friend of mine, to the point that some people who have nothing to do with it started to avoid me. What happened to Mr DeCandido and what I am hearing being said about me behind my back made me worried about my own safety. I became very cautious when I go birding especially that I do all my birding alone. I became afraid of birders. It is unbelievable, I know you would say that. But this is the truth. I became very withdrawn and started avoiding all birders, except those who I know they are friendly to me. I think you got my point on why Mr. Fiore should be blocked. His persistence in writing these things help radicalizing birders. But you might say promoting good birding ethics is a good thing. The problem is that there are significant number of birders who don’t agree with these ethics and some of them are very big in bird watching and birding research. It doesn’t matter what side you are on. The attack on the Capitol on Wednesday was committed by the radicalized right. But the radicalized left is also capable of similar acts if they have a chance. It is the radicalization that is the problem. And there is so much radicalization in the birding community, I am afraid. Some people might consider me radical when it comes to posting photos of owls or consider Mr DeCandido as radical in using songs playing but at least I don’t resort to violence or cancel culture or spreading false rumors and to the best of my knowledge Mr. DeCandido doesn’t do either. So, please, Stop the radicalization and block Mr. Fiore. Thank you Gus Keri

Re: [nysbirds-l] Birding the Black Dirt Region, Orange County
Trespassing is *against the law*. Adults should know this. Birders or photographers are *not* exempt. See the following document on proper behavior. Sheesh, does it really need to be posted? Apparently and sadly yes. Yes it does. https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=sites&srcid=ZGVmYXVsdGRvbWFpbnxxY2JpcmRjbHVifGd4OjcyZDE1Nzk1MDNjZWM3Yzc It will not take a lot for the selfish and inconsiderate to ruin it for the rest of us. The last time I was there there were birders from a number of states trampling all of the fields, much to the dismay (right fully so) of the local farmers. So much so that there was talk of putting up a locked entrance gate. The other place to go is Pine Island Turf Nursery. I suggest NOT to visit that farm during the week since they are working and preparing the fields for winter. I generally go there ONLY during the weekends, when the place is more quiet. https://ebird.org/hotspot/L1041928 Good luck! Felipe On Sep 23, 2019, at 2:07 PM, Robert Lewis wrote: A few weeks ago I asked here for directions about where to actually go in the Black Dirt region. One can find many references to birding there online, and there are some ebird spots, but there are many dirt or gravel roads and many seem to be on private property, and many are obviously not driveable once you see them. So what is an out-of-the-area birder supposed to do? I thank Felipe Pimentel who provided directions to the Pine Island Turf farm. Yesterday I went exploring. The attached map is the result. Enter the area at Skinner Lane, 41.320541, -74.435339. My route is the narrow black line. I went up Skinner Lane to the northwest until it meets Iris Road, which is called Celery Avenue on my Iphone map app. Then I turned left and follow Iris a long time. It is all an excellent gravel road. I was surprised to see a bridge over the Wallkill River at 41.325083, -74.466914. It is certainly driveable. The maps are wrong in that there is no connection between Iris and Transport at 41.300798, -74.472080. As for birds, there were very few. But in a few months -- let's hope. Re: [nysbirds-l] Purposeful Birdwatching
Re doldrums: one cannot appreciate a great day of birding without bad days. Yin/Yang Also its important to have LOOB ( life outside of birding ) Arie Gilbert No. Babylon NY www.PowerBirder.Blogspot.com www.QCBirdClub.org Sent from my T-Mobile 4G LTE Device Original message From: Shaibal Mitra Date: 6/26/19 11:11 AM (GMT-05:00) To: "NYSBIRDS (NYSBIRDS-L@cornell.edu)" Subject: [nysbirds-l] Purposeful Birdwatching Judging from many, many recent conversations with fellow birders, it seems that people are having a tough time of it during these June doldrums. From independent sources over the past week, I've heard: "crushing disappointment;" "why is it so bad?;" "is it going to get better?" "something could show up, right?;" "didn't birding used to be good?;" "this place used to be good, I think" and more. And this has mostly been in the context of ordinary, local birding, not directly related to the more ominous big-picture concerns expressed by Chris recently. My usual response, admittedly slightly sadistic, is that birding excitement has always been relative. We modern observers can't begin to imagine how bad it was before the legal protection of birds was implemented a century ago, and yet the observers of that time still found birdwatching exciting--and were motivated enough to achieve protective legislation in the face of forces as ruthless and malevolent as those confronting us now. Imagine the excitement experienced by Harry Hathaway, the father of Rhode Island ornithology, when in 1894 he saw his first Great Blue Heron, after ten years of field work! It was Hathaway's ongoing work that eventually revealed that a unique, seemingly outlying, 19th Century winter record of White-throated Sparrow in RI was not an accident. He documented two more winter records and lived long enough to see RI's plundered and deforested landscape recover sufficiently to harbor the lisping flocks of White-throats we now take for granted on the CBCs. On Long Island, Ludlow Griscom scolded over-exuberant birders who tossed off sight records of Ring-billed Gulls in winter and summer, citing a countable number of such specimens as the gold standard of documentation for that species in that context. Chafing at this discipline, Cruickshank and Peterson figured out how to find and identify Ring-billed Gulls better then their predecessors--proving again the eternal pleasure of purposeful birdwatching. Yesterday I saw my first adult Ring-billed Gulls of the season at Robert Moses SP, Suffolk County. I'm not sure of the date for my last spring adult, but I did manage to record that none were present by 17 April: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S55097294 And I am able to pull up the date of the late-June return of adults in at least one other year: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S17210602 [note to eBird: please enable sorting of checklists by Julian date!] A little sleuthing subsequently revealed that two of my colleagues beat me to it this year, documenting an adult Ring-bill at Cupsogue two days before my exciting find (though it required some follow-up work to obtain their photos and a definitive age): https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S57623401 Hypothesis: Ring-billed Gulls whose breeding efforts fail after early June abandon the colonies and disperse, some reaching the coast. [nysbirds-l] Roseate Spoonbill in NY YES. 6pm Aug 2.
Bob Proniewich and I went to Wallkill nwr today in the morning and observed the spoonbill in its usual spot on the west trail in the cut south of the water control and water depth meter. Much as we hoped, when it flew a few times it never ventured anywhere near to the NY border. We left to get food after a while and then went on a fruitless search for the previously reported anhinga. No luck. We returned to wallkill after we concluded the anhinga was not gettable and after the rain stopped we went back to get another look. We were joined by Bill Weissman and we brought him to the area and located the bird for him. By around 6pm we decided to depart, and unbeknownst to us it took off north some time after we did. Bill called me but I was out of cell phone range. When we emerged from tree covered section of the trail near the berm, I spotted a large bird flying south from near oil city road. It was a spoonbill, and my immediate thought was that it was a second bird!! We watched it fly south and we made haste to go back to where we had it before and determine if it was the bird or another. Bill confirmed it had flown north, and while it was not a second bird Bob and I were elated at our good fortune.
