just a note: [nysbirds-l] Oops. Egret flew.

2015-05-21 Thread Taylor, Robert Michael
If anyone's looking up for it, there's a possibility the Little Egret is in the
marsh on the north side of Captree Island - I know the area is frequented by
native Egrets, sometimes Little Blue Herons (I saw a flock of 100+ Glossy Ibis
there last summer also) If anyone tries scanning the marsh, please be aware
that this is a residential area.

Hi all,
The nightjar that Gabriel Willow found this morning is a Chuck-wills-widow. I
just saw it now during my lunch hour and on the scene were a group of birders
who were discussing the id and some thought Whip-poor-will.

Points to note are size, large flat head, long wings that are crossing each
other over the tail, almost reaching tail tip. All those are characteristic for
Chuck.

The id has also been confirmed by Andrew Farnsworth.

If you have the opportunity, go watch this bird. It's in an open location and
you'll get great views. While I was there it moved around a bit and was
preening itself.

good birding, and thanks Gabriel for a great find,

Adding to the list, I was there around 2pm yesterday and today: yesterday I
saw 2 Brown Thrashers by the shed...today I saw a Catbird and a White Throated
Sparrow

Also on the NW corner of the lawn was a female Palm Warbler - it was boldy
going in between and around people sitting on the lawn

I did a quick (15 min.) loop walk around the perimeter of the lawn late this
morning (~11:40) on the way to work. I did not see any of the species Alan
mentioned in his post (maybe the Pine, but no bins so not sure), but I did have
repeated point-blank looks at a male Bay-breasted Warbler in the plantings near
the northwest corner of the lawn. At one point it was perched right on one of
the wooden benches, no more than 4-5 ft.
away. Also saw 2-3 Common Yellowthroats and 1 Catbird. Heard a couple of
warbler chip notes mid-canopy in a sycamore, but never laid eyes on the
vocalist. I can only imagine what must have been present in the park earlier in
the morning, or was there when I was but in hiding.

I was going through my photos and also saw a Black Bellied Plover last Thursday
- it appeared injured since once of its wings were lowered but it was still
able to fly. Wanted to include this update since we're approaching the
shorebird fall migration.

Re:[nysbirds-l] Bryant Park NYC Mourning Warbler - No

2014-05-22 Thread Taylor, Robert Michael
Hi Everyone,

During my lunch break (2:00 - ~2:15pm) I went with my good friend, NYC birder
Mike, to try and relocate the reported Mourning Warbler but didn't have any
luck. (other birders were also out looking) We looked in the SE corner and by
the shed area which is now "glovered up" with leaf bags of post-blossoming bulb
plants.

We found the normal White Throated Sparrows, Common Yellowthroats, and
Ovenbirds - Mike spotted a really gorgeous looking Wood Thrush. The Wood
Thrush was pulling up a few worms at a time and having lunch.

update: [nysbirds-l] Bryant Lincoln

2014-05-14 Thread Taylor, Robert Michael
The Lincoln Sparrow was relocated with the help of my good friend and city

people so I'm guessing the Lincoln Sparrow needed something more secluded.
Also saw Common Yellowthroats - park is crawling with Ovenbirds..

2014-05-13 Thread Taylor, Robert Michael
Hi Everyone,

I figured I should send this out late instead of not at all - went to a number
of places - will just include the highlights:

Green Island, Wantagh - semi-palmated plovers all over the place
Jones Beach West End - Red Knots on the Coast Guard sandbar (stopped, ate, flew
off), 9 Glossy Ibis overhead flying west, Scarlet Tanager pair, Rose Breasted
Grosbeaks, Great Scaup female and Common Loon still present, took a photo of a
sparrow that I can't yet ID - could be a Savannah Sparrow with lots of yellow
on the head - will work on the ID
Nickerson Beach - Common Terns and Black Skimmers
Point Lookout - raft of ~75 Black Scoters
Muttontown Preserve - Turkey Vulture over the large field
Massapequa Preserve - 2 Great Crested Flycatchers, Wood Thrush singing

[nysbirds-l] Bryant Park, NYC: Wood Thrush, and a few new arrivals

2014-05-09 Thread Taylor, Robert Michael
Hi Everyone,

I stopped by Bryant Park with NYC birder Mike during our "lunch break" for a
quick look by the shed...was quickly joined by another birder (I don't name
names unless I hear otherwise) It has been slower than last year but hopefully
picking up now...saw Hermit Thrush, Ovenbirds, White Throated Sparrow, and a
Common Yellowthroat. A Wood Thrush also made a quick appearance. Besides the
Hermit Thrush, most birds seemed skittish.

Wish I could have stayed longer - have a feeling there was more to find.

[nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve/ Bryant Park today - no new birds, note about Screech Owl

2014-04-22 Thread Taylor, Robert Michael
Hi Everyone,

I stopped at Massapequa Preserve before work this morning and although it was
very "birdy" I didn't see any new migrants. Cardinals, Robins, Red Winged
Blackbirds, Grackles were all over as well as Downy Woodpeckers - a Carolina
Wren put on a show singing for the sunrise and a pair of Red Bellied
Woodpeckers put on their own kind of show. There's a nesting pair of Mute
Swans on the smaller pond.

***I only saw the red morph Screech Owl for the last few weeks - can someone
please message me if they see the grey one? A few local birders and myself are
concerned if something happened to it. (not assuming the worst yet)

During my break, I walked over to Bryant Park with my friend and local NYC
birder Mike (has a thing for Juncos and Grackles) - we just saw Song and White
Throated Sparrows - we talked to another birder who also noted it was slow, but
mentioned he saw Hermit Thrush and a Swamp Sparrow earlier.

[nysbirds-l] Late report: Jones Beach West End, Oceanside, Muttontown, Cold Spring Harbor, Massapequa Preserve

2014-03-28 Thread Taylor, Robert Michael
Hi Everyone,

Apologies for the late report - I didn't see anyone else report from these
locations yesterday so figured I'd send it out.

Jones Beach West End was full of birds yesterday morning: besides the usual
suspects I saw a Tree Sparrow, 2 large groups of Tree Swallows (~40) - one
group was on the West End 2 lot. At the Coast Guard Station, saw 5 Horned
Grebes - one was in almost full breeding plumage and a pair of Buffleheads. On
the sandbar, saw one Piping Plover, ~50 Black Bellied Plover as well as Dunlin
and Sanderlings. I tried with another birder, Stan, to find the Meadowlarks
and Shrike, but no luck.

At the Oceanside Marine Study Area, my target bird was the Clapper Rail, but
couldn't locate any - I did see a Yellowlegs and the Osprey is back on the
platform.

At St John's Pond, I saw the previously reported pair of Redheads and a group
of Ring Necked Ducks.

Muttontown Preserve and the Uplands Farm Sanctuary in Cold Spring Harbor were
both eerily quiet - At Muttontown Preserve, I literally saw 4 birds: 2 Robins,
a Starling and a Flicker so I drove back South to Massapequa Preserve which had
a lot more action. I gave a couple of tries for the Snipe, but it must've
been hiding (per usual). There were Green Winged Teal and Hooded Mergansers on
the pond that is parallel to Doris Place. A few photographers and birders were
checking out a couple of well known preserve residents. Around that area, saw
a Winter Wren and a Merlin perched overhead, but couldn't get a great photo - a
group of Wigeons touched down by the sports field for a drink at their puddle.
Before sunset, a huge mixed flock of Redwinged Blackbirds and Common Grackles
arrived by the sports fields.

Good birding,
Rob in Massapequa (currently in NYC)

[nysbirds-l] Brants heading back North and notes from Massapequa Preserve: Screech Owls and Wilson's Snipe

2014-03-25 Thread Taylor, Robert Michael
Hi Everyone,

On the way to work today, I saw 3 groups of Brants heading North in the
vicinity of Wantagh and Freeport: 2 groups of 100+ and one group of 10. I've
seen much larger groups and have seen Brants until at least mid-April so
perhaps this is the beginning of their trip back North.

I was at the Massapequa Preserve for about an hour Sunday and saw the
continuing grey morph Screech Owl but the red morph must've been tucked away.
After today, I'm no longer going to report the Screech Owls - they've been at
the Preserve for 2 years (released from a rehab) and have made it their home.
I didn't see the Wilson's Snipe, but it's a hit or miss thing. ***I know of
one birder in past reports who apparently thinks it's "cute" to find the Snipe
by "flushing" it out - please don't "locate" the Snipe this way - you know who
you are.***

I also stopped at Wertheim's National Refuge in Shirley but didn't see anything
unusual: Red Tailed Hawk, Green Winged Teal and Hooded Mergansers were most
notable.

Good birding,

[nysbirds-l] Rockville Center: Peregrine Falcon hunting

2014-03-12 Thread Taylor, Robert Michael
Hi Everyone,

On my way to work this morning on the LIRR, I saw a Peregrine Falcon flying
next to the tracks for at least a few minutes - almost keeping up with the
train. As it approached the church at Rockville Center it went into "divebomb"
mode and dived to the church steeple probably trying to scare some pigeons out
- I didn't see it get anything as my train left the area, but was cool to see
it do what Peregrine Falcons do best.

Good birding,

[nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve: Common Mergansers

2014-03-07 Thread Taylor, Robert Michael
Hi Everyone,

This morning I missed my LIRR train by one minute so rather than stand on the
platform I decided to walk into the preserve for a little while. At the pond
by Brady Park, I saw 15+ drake Common Mergansers and at least 5 females. I'm
sure there were more females but I didn't have my binoculars. Also present
were coots, pied billed grebes, a few great blue herons, gadwall and mallards.
Usually this pond doesn't have great diversity of waterfowl as the other
ponds, but once in a while will have some surprises. Cardinals and Redwinged
Blackbirds were singing along the water's edge.

2014-02-24 Thread Taylor, Robert Michael
Thanks, regarding the size, I just know they were either the same size as a
robin or a little smaller

They look like Rusty Blackbirds (forgot to say that in earlier post) based on
the tails.

Boat-tailed tails are almost the same length as the body. Boat tailed Grackles
are 16' and Rusty Blackbirds are 9". This is hard to tell from photos but that
is almost twice the size. If it was larger than a robin it would be a
Boat-tailed, same size as a American Robin then a common, smaller than a
American Robin then a Rusty.

Hi Matthew,

I have to admit I'm not an expert an Icterids - I'm mostly a duck kinda guy.
I've been getting differences of opinion between Boat Tailed Grackles and Rusty
Blackbirds. The first day most people were saying Rusty Blackbirds, now most
people are saying Boat Tailed Grackles.

I've seen Boat Tailed Grackles before and seeing these bunch of blackbirds I
thought they seemed different. I can post more pics when I get home later. Do
you have an idea what they are? At this point, I'm going by what more
experienced birders are telling me (and I appreciate the help)

Thanks,

How could they be Boat-tailed? The tails are way too short.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for everyone's help with the blackbird ID from yesterday - most are
saying they were Boat Tailed Grackles and not Rusty Blackbirds.

Speaking of blackbirds, at Jones Beach West End and by Meadowbrook Parkway I
saw Red Wing Blackbirds and Boat Tailed Grackles.

At the Coast Guard Marina I saw the same waterfowl as Saturday - a female
bufflehead and 2 Horned Grebes as well as 2 Common Loons and Brant. There were
more birds on the median today: Killdeer, Juncos, Mockingbirds.

I met a very pleasant couple looking for a light phase/ghost Northern Harrier,
but we found a typical one over the dunes. A crowd was gathered observing a
Snowy Owl.

Along the Meadowbrook, I saw the previously reported Rough Legged Hawk and also
3 Red Tailed Hawks.

Good birding,

Rob in Massapequa
