[nysbirds-l] Painted Bunting at Caumsett State Park (Suffolk Co.) - NO
On Monday a group of birders took a long walk to see if the Painted Bunting found on Saturday on the Northern Nassau CBC was still present. Despite extensive searching we had no luck. Observed on our walk was Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Hermit Thrush, Rufous-sided Towhee, and Fox Sparrow, along withe the more common species. [nysbirds-l] Painted Bunting at Caumsett State Park (Suffolk Co.)
Today Sue and I participated in the annual Northern Nassau Christmas Bird Count (CBC). We covered Caumsett State Park. The wind but a real damper on the day’s birding, as much of our area is on Long Island Sound. About 10:00AM while birding east of Harbor Road (the road that parallels Long Island Sound), we encountered a bright yellow/green bird feeding low in the shrubbery along one of the trails. We were originally looking into the sun at the bird and it appeared yellow. With no view of the bill we thought we might have a warbler. We were able to maneuver past the bird to get the sun at our back and the bright green upperparts and yellow/green underparts and small, conical bill quickly focused our attention on Painted Bunting. We observed the bird for about ten minutes as it actively fed low in the shrubbery, occasionally landing on grass heads and eating the seeds. A number of photos were taken and I included a few on my Flickr site. The location where the bird was found is about 2.5 miles from the Caumsett parking lot. Walk north on the Fishing Road located north of the main parking area (check the kiosk to see a map). Proceed two miles to the Fisherman’s parking lot on LI Sound. Head east (uphill) on Harbor Road for about a quarter mile. There is a trail on the left with a large green sign stating “No horses beyond this point”. Take this trail for a few hundred yards and you will arrive at a fork. The left trail descends down to LI Sound. The right trail goes east and then bends right (south). Search anywhere along this trail, particularly where the trail intersects with another trail on the right. This is the last location the bird was seen.
